If FFmpeg has exited, an FFmpeg output-retry option cannot restart it: use a process supervisor such as systemd to launch it again. First identify whether FFmpeg exited, its network output failed while it kept running, the EC2 instance rebooted, or YouTube stopped accepting the stream. Each failure needs a different recovery step.
Find which part of the stream failed
A YouTube stream on EC2 depends on several layers: the FFmpeg process, its connection to YouTube ingest, the EC2 host, and the YouTube live event. A failure at one layer does not prove another failed. For example, an FFmpeg error by itself is not evidence of an AWS infrastructure problem.

- FFmpeg exited: inspect its exit status and logs. It needs an external supervisor or service manager to start it again.
- Output failed but FFmpeg is still running: investigate the network and output recovery behavior. FIFO muxer recovery applies only while FFmpeg remains alive.
- EC2 rebooted or is unreachable: check instance status checks and system or boot logs, then verify the workload after the instance returns.
- YouTube stopped accepting the encoder: check the event and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the protocol-specific ingest settings.
Do not assume a restarted encoder will resume the same YouTube live event. The applicable behavior depends on the ingest protocol and the event’s current state.

Restart FFmpeg after it exits
Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager rather than relying on a retry option inside FFmpeg. A service manager can start the process again after failure and, when configured, start it after the operating system boots. The exact unit and restart policy depend on your operating system and workload; there is no single configuration that suits every encoder command.

- Inspect the failure. Review FFmpeg’s exit status and logs, along with the service manager’s status and journal. Identify whether the input disappeared, the command failed, or the process encountered another error.
- Check the service configuration. Confirm that the service has the correct command, environment, input paths, and permissions. Configure an appropriate restart-on-failure policy and enable the service at boot if it should return after a reboot.
- Start or restart the service. Use the service manager for your operating system, then check its status and logs to confirm that FFmpeg is running and publishing.
- Verify the YouTube event. Check YouTube Live Control Room to see whether the encoder is being received and whether the event is still in a state that accepts it.
Keep the stream key out of readable shell history and routine logs. Store credentials in a controlled configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your environment. Repeated automatic restarts can restore a process, but they do not diagnose or fix the cause; preserve logs and investigate recurring failures.
When FFmpeg is alive but its output fails
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents the attempt_recovery option for attempting to recover a failed output. It is false by default, and the documentation describes it as particularly useful for network output. This is output-level recovery: it does not bring back an FFmpeg process that has exited.

FIFO queue behavior also involves a tradeoff. Dropping packets when a queue overflows can prevent the encoder from blocking, but omitted packets mean lost stream content. Check the documentation that matches your installed FFmpeg build, and test the selected options with your actual input and ingest endpoint rather than assuming they cover every network failure.

After an EC2 reboot or recovery
AWS automatic instance recovery addresses qualifying underlying hardware or software issues associated with a failed system status check on a supported, configured instance. It is not a general response to an application process exiting, and an instance status check failure alone does not trigger it. AWS describes recovery as appearing to the instance like an unplanned reboot; volatile memory is lost and operating-system uptime resets. - Check the instance’s status checks and system or boot logs to establish whether it rebooted or recovered.
- After it returns, check whether the FFmpeg workload is running. AWS advises checking the application and starting it if it is not; see AWS troubleshooting for an unreachable EC2 instance.
- Configure the service manager to start the workload at boot if unattended recovery is required.
- Confirm the encoder connection and the event’s current state in YouTube Live Control Room.
Automatic instance recovery does not preserve volatile memory, and it should not be treated as a substitute for process supervision or boot-time service configuration.
Check YouTube ingest and event status
When FFmpeg is running again, verify the destination, stream key, ingest protocol, and live event. A process restart alone does not establish that YouTube has accepted the encoder or that the previous event can continue. YouTube’s HLS stream setup instructions describe HLS ingestion and its requirements; they do not establish a universal RTMP reconnection rule. Follow the instructions for the protocol you actually use and rely on current YouTube status tools for the event.

Do not apply reconnect behavior documented for another service to YouTube. For example, AWS IVS documents behavior for its own streaming service, not YouTube ingest.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- FFmpeg stays down after EC2 returns: the workload may not be enabled at boot or its service configuration may be invalid. Check service status and boot logs, then correct the configuration and start it.
- The service repeatedly restarts: inspect the FFmpeg and service logs before treating restarts as a fix. Check the command, environment, input paths, permissions, and credentials.
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no incoming stream: confirm the destination, key, protocol, and event state. Use the instructions for the selected ingest protocol.
- YouTube no longer shows the expected event as live: do not assume a reconnect resumes the same event. Check Live Control Room and follow the current event and protocol instructions.
- The encoder stalls during output trouble: review FIFO queue behavior and the tradeoff between blocking and dropping packets. Test configuration against the actual ingest endpoint.
- You suspect AWS automatic recovery: verify the system status check and instance eligibility/configuration rather than inferring infrastructure failure from an FFmpeg error.
