While driving or cycling, do not read, respond, record, browse, or change settings. While walking, pause somewhere safe before interacting and look up before crossing. In every setting, make sure the display does not block your view, keep surrounding sounds audible, and check the rules where you live.
Using smart glasses while driving
Set up navigation before you move, then leave the glasses alone. Do not read or answer messages, browse, record video, adjust settings, or follow entertainment content while driving. A voice-operated or peripheral display is not automatically distraction-free or lawful.

Google’s safety guidance for Glass says, “Do not perform tasks on Glass that would prevent you from concentrating on the activity at hand or from paying attention to your surroundings.” Google discontinued sales of Glass Enterprise Edition 2 in 2023, so this is a general manufacturer safety principle, not a statement about a currently sold model. Google Glass safety information also warns that a poorly positioned display may obstruct vision; follow the fit guidance for your own device.

Its guidance concerns vehicle displays, not a test of wearable glasses, but it offers a conservative design principle: do not use a display that draws your eyes away or blocks your view. Distracted-driving rules differ across jurisdictions. The CDC describes a mix of state and federal measures, including texting restrictions and hands-free laws. CDC distracted-driving prevention New York Senate Bill S1054 is marked active and proposes restrictions on head-mounted portable electronic devices while driving; a bill is not enacted law. New York State Senate Bill S1054 Check current local law rather than assuming that hands-free use is permitted.
Using smart glasses while cycling
Do not interact with the glasses while riding. Pull over somewhere safe before changing a route, responding to a prompt, taking a photo, or adjusting a feature. Keep audio low or off so it does not mask traffic, horns, or other important sounds.

NHTSA advises cyclists not to text, listen to music, or use anything that takes their eyes, ears, or mind off the road and traffic. It also recommends riding predictably, signaling, and looking over a shoulder before changing position or turning. NHTSA bicycle safety guidance
- Check before a ride that the glasses do not interfere with your helmet, required eye protection, peripheral vision, or hearing.
- If they do interfere, remove them or stop using them for the ride.
- Follow local rules on bicycle equipment and device use.

Using smart glasses while walking
A glasses display may reduce the need to handle a phone, but it still invites you to glance away from your surroundings. Keep glances brief and stop somewhere safe before reading messages or operating controls. Pay particular attention near roads, driveways, stairs, and crowded paths.
For directions, check the route before setting off and again only from a safe stopping place. At a crossing, look up and check traffic independently instead of following a display prompt. Meta describes turn-by-turn walking directions on Ray-Ban Display, initially in beta for select cities; that product feature is not evidence that looking at a display while crossing is safe. Check fit, features, and local rules before relying on a device
Smart glasses differ in display placement, audio, recording controls, and the interaction they require. Before using a pair outside, check whether its display sits in your sightline, whether operating it demands attention while moving, whether audio could mask traffic, and whether the frame works with your prescription or protective eyewear. Do not treat a product’s navigation feature or hands-free controls as a safety endorsement.

As one example, Meta announced Ray-Ban Display on September 17, 2025, with limited US retail availability beginning September 30, 2025, at a starting price of $799. Meta described visual maps and turn-by-turn pedestrian directions, initially in beta for select cities. Ray-Ban says Ray-Ban Meta glasses require a paired smartphone and Meta AI app, include a Safety & Warranty Guide, and are rated IPX4 for light rain—not submersion or extended liquid exposure. These are setup and care details, not evidence of road safety. Ray-Ban Meta FAQs
