Before buying a newly launched crypto token, verify what rights it gives you, who is responsible for the project, what the published code and any audit actually cover, and whether you could realistically resell it. Then assess the offer’s legal context and look for pressure tactics or promises of guaranteed returns. These checks can expose unanswered questions; they cannot prove a token is safe or guarantee that you can sell it.
1. What exactly are you buying?
Confirm the token and network
Find the token’s official contract address and blockchain network through sources you trust independently. Do not rely on a search result, a social-media post, or a message from someone promoting the sale as your only confirmation. A wrong address can lead you to a different asset from the one you intended to assess.

Read the offer for rights, purpose and limits
Look for a clear explanation of what holding the token entitles you to, if anything. Does it provide a specific use in a product, a claim against an issuer, or only an intended future use? Check the business plan, roadmap, use of sale proceeds, and any refund or resale restrictions. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin advises prospective buyers to examine these details. A white paper is the project’s account of its plans, not independent confirmation that those plans are achievable.
Ask how the stated use could create demand for the token, and distinguish that explanation from evidence that people are already using the product. A project’s intended utility, hoped-for adoption and future token value are not the same thing.

2. Who is responsible, and what can you verify?
Identify the issuer, promoters, named affiliates and the roles they claim to have. Check whether their identities, relevant experience and connection to the project can be verified through information independent of the project’s own promotional channels.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises buyers to investigate affiliates and warns that difficulty finding information about named affiliates is a red flag. An anonymous or pseudonymous team does not, by itself, prove fraud, but it limits your ability to check who is accountable for the claims.
Do not treat a polished website or busy social accounts as proof of a working product or credible team. Look for verifiable evidence behind specific claims, rather than counting posts, followers or endorsements.

3. What does the code permit, and what does an audit cover?
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin suggests asking: “Ask whether the blockchain is open and public, whether the code has been published, and whether there has been an independent cybersecurity audit.” If code or an audit is available, check whether it corresponds to the token contract and version being offered. An audit of different code, or a document whose scope is unclear, does not establish what was reviewed for this token.
An audit is evidence to examine, not a guarantee that a token is safe. If you are reviewing a contract, determine whether its permissions allow administrators to mint tokens, pause transfers, block addresses, change transfer fees or upgrade the contract. These are contract-specific technical questions: the project’s description alone does not verify how the deployed code behaves. If you cannot confirm the relevant permissions, treat them as unknown rather than assuming they are absent.
4. Can you realistically exit?
Check where the token trades, whether there is observable liquidity, and whether the offering or platform restricts resale. The CFTC identifies liquidity as one factor affecting a token’s value; the SEC advises prospective buyers to ask whether and how a token can be resold. The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), in a statement dated 12 November 2021 about the DIFC framework, described illiquid or flat markets as a barrier to trading or cashing out. That statement concerns its stated framework and should not be treated as a universal or current description of rules elsewhere.

A displayed price or recent trade does not show that you could sell a meaningful amount at that price. Before relying on an exit, establish what market is available and whether resale is actually permitted. If those details are unclear, you may have no practical way to turn a quoted value into proceeds.
5. Does the offer make sense legally and economically?
Check the legal context that applies to you
Rules depend on the offer’s facts and the jurisdiction. For U.S. readers, the SEC says securities laws apply to securities, including crypto assets when those assets are securities. Its educational material updated in April 2026 describes investment-contract analysis in terms of an investment of money in a common enterprise, a reasonable expectation of profits, and profits derived from the essential managerial efforts of others. Do not assume every token is—or is not—a security based only on its label.
If an offering claims to be registered or to rely on an exemption, check whether that claim can be verified in the relevant records. If the legal classification matters to your decision, seek advice appropriate to your jurisdiction; U.S. guidance does not determine the rules or protections applicable in every country.

Separate an economic case from a promise
Consider whether the project explains how its product, token function and use of proceeds fit together. A roadmap or forecast describes an intended outcome, not demonstrated adoption or guaranteed value. The CFTC’s customer advisory cautions: “Be especially wary of promises or guarantees of future value.”

Pause if a promoter pushes you to act immediately, frames social-media attention as proof of quality, or promises unusually high or guaranteed returns. The SEC warns that hype around crypto assets, including memecoin presales, can be followed by promoters selling before a price falls. It also warns investors not to make decisions based solely on social media. The CFTC says there is no guaranteed investment or trading strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify identities and communications independently, especially when someone claims to represent the issuer or a platform. Be wary of requests for extra money to release funds or recover losses: the SEC identifies false recovery or withdrawal fees and impersonation among crypto-related warning signs. Do not send more funds simply because a message creates urgency or claims a payment is the last obstacle to withdrawal.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
Before proceeding, make sure you can answer these questions with evidence rather than promotional claims:
- Have I independently confirmed the token’s contract address and network?
- Can I explain what rights or specific use holding the token provides?
- Do I understand how the sale proceeds are intended to be used, and what resale or refund limits apply?
- Can I verify who is responsible for the project and the roles of its named affiliates?
- Is the published code for the relevant contract, and does any audit identify its scope and version?
- Do I know where resale is possible, whether it is restricted, and whether the market has observable liquidity?
- Have I considered the legal rules that apply to this offer and my jurisdiction?
- Am I being asked to act because the evidence is persuasive, or because the pitch is creating urgency?
If important answers remain unknown, treat that uncertainty as part of the risk rather than filling gaps with assumptions. The CFTC’s customer advisory puts the core approach plainly: “Your best protection is to thoroughly research digital coins or tokens and exercise caution.”
