Yes. You can give a Shopify storefront a new visual direction while keeping the theme already installed. Work on a duplicate from Online Store → Themes → Edit theme, use the theme editor for colors, typography, layout, sections and settings, and use Sidekick or Shopify Magic where the editor offers those controls. Preview every change on desktop and mobile, edit AI-generated copy, inspect generated code, and save manually only after the result is ready.
What “redesign without changing the theme” means
A theme is the design framework that supplies your storefront’s sections, blocks, settings and templates. Redesigning without changing it means you continue editing that framework rather than installing or publishing a different theme. The work happens inside the existing theme editor, where each theme exposes editable design settings and content areas.

Shopify’s theme editor is intended for this kind of change: its sections and settings let you alter the store’s design without editing code. You can change a visual system, reorder or hide content, rewrite supported text, and in eligible themes generate a new block. The theme itself remains the same theme.

Which Shopify AI feature should handle each redesign task?
Choose the tool according to the type of change you need. Sidekick works inside the theme editor and can act on settings, sections and blocks that already exist. Shopify Magic supplies generation controls in supported text fields and can generate compatible theme blocks or imagery where those controls are available.
| Redesign task | Best place to do it | What the tool can do | What you must check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change the overall visual style | Theme editor global settings, with Sidekick open | Suggest or apply changes to colors, typography, spacing and other global settings | Contrast, hierarchy, brand consistency and every template affected by global settings |
| Change the home-page order | Theme editor sections and blocks, with Sidekick | Move, hide or remove existing sections and blocks | Desktop and mobile order, navigation to important content and section-specific settings |
| Rewrite a heading, paragraph or button label | A supported theme text field with the generate-text control | Produce a draft from your instructions and supplied context | Product facts, claims, tone, length, links and legal or regulatory wording |
| Add a new design element | An eligible section: Add block → Generate | Generate a compatible, editable theme block from a layout description | Eligibility, generated settings, responsive behavior, accessibility, performance and code errors |
| Create a hero or marketing visual | A supported image-generation control in the admin or theme workflow | Generate an image suggestion for a banner or other visual | Brand suitability, legibility of any text, image quality, licensing requirements and whether you explicitly save it |
Sidekick does not publish changes for you. Shopify’s guidance says you must be in the theme editor for Sidekick to make suggestions or changes, and you must save theme changes manually. Treat every AI result as an editable proposal, not an automatic redesign.
Before you start: protect the current storefront
- Duplicate the current theme. In the Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes, open the actions menu for the current theme and choose the duplicate option. Give the copy a name that identifies the redesign and date.
- Keep the current theme unpublished. The live theme remains your fallback while you work. Do not delete it until the redesigned version has been reviewed and published successfully.
- Inventory important customizations. Note custom liquid, app blocks, navigation, product information, tracking snippets and any template-specific sections that must remain. AI can rearrange existing items, but it does not know which store-specific details are business-critical unless you tell it.
- Collect verified source facts. Prepare approved product specifications, audience descriptions, brand vocabulary, prices and policy language before asking for copy. This gives the text generator facts to use and makes its draft easier to audit.
- Choose a review route. Decide who will check claims, accessibility, mobile behavior and conversion-critical pages before publication. A generated block can contain code that needs technical attention.
Duplicating first is also the easiest recovery plan: if a change produces an unexpected layout, you can discard it in the duplicate or return to the prior published theme.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 1: open the duplicate in the theme editor
- Go to Online Store → Themes.
- Find the duplicate and select Edit theme.
- Use the page selector to inspect the home page and the important product, collection, cart and other templates your theme exposes.
- Open Sidekick from within the theme editor. Sidekick needs that context to make theme suggestions or changes.
Start with the storefront’s visual system before changing individual sections. A global adjustment gives the rest of the redesign a consistent baseline and reduces the need to repeat the same instruction for every component.
Step 2: set a new visual direction with Sidekick
Use Sidekick for global settings such as colors, typography, spacing and layout options that your theme exposes. State both the desired direction and the boundaries. For example:
Refresh the color palette and typography to feel calm and editorial, while keeping the current theme structure and all existing product information.Use a high-contrast palette, preserve the existing button hierarchy, and keep the current logo treatment and product photography.Make the spacing more generous on the home page without changing the number of sections or hiding product details.
Specific constraints matter. Mention the audience, desired mood, colors to preserve, type of products, reading order and any elements that must not move. Sidekick can suggest or apply settings, but the preview is the authority: inspect headers, navigation, product cards, forms, footers and any template that inherits global values.
Check color and typography changes
- Confirm body text remains readable against every background.
- Check links, buttons, form fields, badges and sale labels, not just the home-page hero.
- Review heading sizes and line lengths on a narrow viewport; a display font that looks balanced on desktop may wrap awkwardly on a phone.
- Verify that the new type hierarchy still distinguishes product names, prices, options and supporting information.
- Look for app or custom sections that use their own colors or font settings rather than the global values.
Step 3: reorganize existing sections and blocks
You do not need a new theme to change the order or visibility of content. In the editor, use Sidekick to work with the sections and blocks already provided by the theme.
Useful instructions describe the desired outcome and identify the exact element:

Reorder the home page so the featured collection appears before the testimonial section.Hide the newsletter signup on this page, but leave it available on the footer of other templates.Move the shipping-information block below the add-to-cart area and keep all existing product details.
After each change, inspect the preview rather than accepting the response as proof that the layout is correct. Confirm that the section appears on the intended template, that its settings remain intact and that hiding an item has not removed a required message or navigation path.
When to move, hide or remove
- Move a section when its content is useful but the reading order is wrong.
- Hide a section when it may be needed on another page or seasonally, but should not appear in this particular context.
- Remove a section only when you are certain its content and settings are no longer needed. Keep a note of what was removed so it can be restored deliberately.
Step 4: generate and edit copy in supported fields
Shopify Magic can draft text in theme fields that display the generation control. If a field has no generate-text control, that field is not supported by this workflow; write it manually or use another approved process instead.
- Open the section or block containing the text field.
- Choose the field’s generate-text control.
- Provide the audience, purpose, brand vocabulary, desired length and factual product details.
- Generate a suggestion, read it in context and edit it before saving.
A useful instruction supplies facts rather than asking for generic marketing language. For example:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWrite a concise hero heading and subheading for first-time home coffee makers. Use these verified facts: 1.2-liter stainless-steel carafe, programmable timer, two-year warranty. Keep the phrase “brew simply” and do not claim that the machine improves health or guarantees better taste.
Check the result against the source facts line by line. AI-generated text can introduce benefits, guarantees or specifications that do not apply. The merchant is responsible for every claim published on the storefront, including wording that came from a generated suggestion.
Copy review checklist
- Are dimensions, materials, compatibility, delivery promises and warranty terms accurate?
- Does the copy describe the actual product variant shown in that section?
- Have unsupported superlatives, medical claims, guarantees or performance promises been removed?
- Do headings and buttons remain understandable when read without surrounding imagery?
- Do the final words match your approved brand vocabulary and legal language?
Step 5: generate a custom block when the existing sections are not enough
Some themes expose Add block → Generate inside a compatible section. This creates a new theme block within the theme you are already editing; it does not require selecting a different theme. Describe the content, layout, responsive behavior and controls you want to edit later.
Shopify recommends a prompt of at least five words. Longer, concrete instructions generally give the generator more useful constraints. For example:
Create a responsive feature block with three icons, a short heading and body text for each feature, an optional image, and an editable button link. Stack the items vertically on mobile and let the merchant change the icon, text, image and link in the block settings.
- Open a section that supports theme blocks.
- Select Add block → Generate.
- Describe the elements, order, layout, mobile behavior and editable settings.
- Preview the proposed block before keeping it.
- Test every generated setting, including text, images, links, alignment and visibility controls.
- Inspect the block on desktop and mobile and compare it with the rest of the theme.
- Keep it only after technical and editorial review; otherwise discard it or refine the prompt.
Eligibility for generated theme blocks
Shopify’s documented eligibility includes the Free trial, Basic, Growth, Advanced and Plus plans. Starter is excluded. The feature is available for themes from the Shopify Theme Store; an eligible third-party theme must have been purchased, and vintage themes are unsupported. Plan and theme support can change, so verify the current eligibility shown in your admin before planning around this feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to inspect in generated block code
- Whether the block renders at all breakpoints and does not create horizontal scrolling.
- Whether headings, controls, links and images have a logical keyboard and screen-reader order.
- Whether color contrast, focus states, alternative text and button labels meet your accessibility requirements.
- Whether the block adds unnecessary scripts, large assets or layout shifts that could slow the page.
- Whether settings actually change the output and do not expose broken or misleading controls.
Generated block code can contain errors or fail accessibility and performance expectations. Shopify says merchants should review and test it, and that Shopify Support and third-party theme developers do not troubleshoot generated-block code. If a generated block causes a problem, deleting the generated file may be necessary. Keep the duplicate and record the change so you can remove the block without losing unrelated work.

- Seamless connectivity: Stay connected with free mobile data and WiFi, ensuring uninterrupted transactions.
- Real-time payment tracking: Monitor payments and issue refunds right from your device, so you're always in control.
Step 6: use generated imagery carefully
Shopify Magic can assist with hero banners and other marketing visuals where an image-generation control is available. Describe the subject, composition, palette, crop and intended placement, then judge the result in the actual section rather than in isolation.
Review the image for quality, brand fit, misleading details and readable text overlays. A preview is not saved into the store until you explicitly save it, so do not assume that generating or previewing an image has changed the customer-facing site. Check the image at the rendered size on both desktop and mobile before keeping it.
Step 7: preview the complete storefront before saving
AI assistance is most useful when paired with a systematic review. Walk through the duplicate as a customer would, not only the section you just changed.
- Home page: Check the first screen, navigation, announcement area, hero, collection links and footer.
- Collection pages: Confirm filters, sorting, product-card prices, badges, images and pagination remain usable.
- Product pages: Test variant selection, quantity, purchase controls, descriptions, media, shipping information and app blocks.
- Cart and forms: Verify buttons, error messages, discount fields, customer-account links and newsletter forms.
- Responsive views: Inspect narrow and wide layouts. Check wrapping, stacking, tap targets, sticky elements and image crops.
- Content accuracy: Read every generated heading, paragraph, label and alt-text field against the approved facts.
Previewing is not the same as saving. Sidekick’s changes to theme settings are not automatically live. Save manually only after the review is complete, then recheck important pages on the saved duplicate.
Step 8: publish only after a final comparison
- Compare the duplicate with the current published theme page by page.
- List intentional changes, including moved, hidden or removed sections and every generated block or image.
- Ask the responsible product, brand and technical reviewers to approve the copy and behavior.
- Save the duplicate manually.
- Open the saved preview again and test the pages most likely to receive traffic.
- Publish the duplicate only when the final preview matches the approved redesign.
If the published result is wrong, the original theme remains available as the fallback because you duplicated it before editing. Keep the duplicate’s change list so you can diagnose whether the issue came from a global setting, a section move, generated copy or generated code.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prompts that preserve the existing theme
AI prompts should make the no-new-theme constraint explicit. Adapt these patterns to your store’s facts:
| Goal | Prompt pattern |
|---|---|
| Visual refresh | Refresh the color palette and typography to feel [brand direction], while keeping the current theme structure and all existing product information. |
| Page hierarchy | Reorder the home page so [priority collection] appears before [section], and hide [section] on this page. |
| Accurate hero copy | Write a concise hero heading and subheading for [specific audience], using these verified product details: [facts]. Keep the brand phrase [term]. |
| Editable feature block | Create a responsive feature block with [elements] in a [layout], and include editable settings for [image/text/button link]. |
Replace every bracketed item with concrete information before submitting the prompt. Include what must remain unchanged, what may move, the desired mobile behavior and the facts the generated text is allowed to use.
How to choose between the four redesign paths
| If your goal is… | Use… | Main risk | Review priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| A different overall mood or hierarchy | Global theme settings and Sidekick | A global change affects templates you did not intend to redesign | Contrast, typography and inherited settings across the store |
| A better order for existing content | Existing sections and blocks with Sidekick | Important content becomes hidden, duplicated or misplaced | Template scope and customer reading order |
| Shorter or clearer wording | Generate-text controls in supported fields | Inaccurate claims or an unsuitable tone | Fact checking and editorial approval |
| A component the theme does not provide | Generated theme block | Code, accessibility or performance defects | Eligibility, settings, responsive behavior and technical testing |
Use the least complex path that solves the problem. An existing section is easier to review and reverse than a generated block; a supported text field is easier to audit than text embedded in custom code.
Common failure modes and fixes
Sidekick does nothing
Open Sidekick from inside Online Store → Edit theme. Shopify’s guidance requires the theme editor to be the active context. If you are elsewhere in the admin, the tool may provide general help rather than a theme change.

The requested field has no generate-text control
That field is not supported by the text-generation workflow. Enter and edit the copy manually, or move the wording to a supported field only if doing so preserves the intended structure and accessibility.
There is no “Add block → Generate” option
Check the plan and theme requirements. Starter plans and vintage themes are excluded, and a third-party theme must be purchased. The section itself must also support theme blocks. If any requirement is missing, use the existing sections and blocks instead.
Recommended Free Tools
The generated block looks fine on desktop but breaks on mobile
Return to the duplicate, refine the prompt with explicit mobile stacking, spacing and image behavior, and test the generated settings at a narrow width. Do not publish until the block works at both breakpoints.
Generated copy contains a claim you cannot verify
Remove the claim or replace it with approved wording. Do not rely on the fact that the sentence came from Shopify Magic; the merchant remains responsible for published text.
A generated block causes a layout or performance problem
Remove the block or delete its generated file if necessary, then restore the prior duplicate or use an existing section. Generated-block code is outside normal Shopify Support and third-party theme-developer troubleshooting, so preserve the duplicate and document the failure.
The preview changed, but the storefront did not
Save the theme manually. Sidekick’s theme-setting changes are not automatically live, and a preview remains unpublished until you save and then publish the edited theme.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What Shopify’s AI tools cannot promise
- They do not guarantee a conversion increase, faster performance or improved search visibility.
- They do not guarantee that every store-specific customization will be preserved when sections, settings or code are changed.
- They do not replace product, legal, accessibility or technical review.
- They do not make every AI feature available on every plan or theme.
- They do not publish Sidekick changes automatically.
Shopify says Magic features are free regardless of subscription plan, but access to particular features can vary. That general statement should not be read as a promise that every individual generation feature is available to every merchant. Confirm the control is present in your own admin before designing a workflow around it.
A repeatable no-theme-change workflow
- Duplicate the published theme.
- Open the duplicate through Online Store → Edit theme.
- Open Sidekick in the editor and establish global colors, typography, spacing and layout direction.
- Reorder, hide or remove existing sections and blocks deliberately.
- Generate copy only in fields that expose the generation control, using verified facts.
- Generate a custom block only when an eligible section and plan support it.
- Preview generated imagery and save it only after checking quality and fit.
- Test desktop, mobile, key templates, links, forms, product details, accessibility and performance.
- Edit or remove anything inaccurate, inaccessible or technically unreliable.
- Save manually, compare the duplicate with the live theme, and publish only after approval.
This approach gives you a meaningful storefront refresh while retaining the installed theme’s framework and a clear rollback path.
