How to Use Shift in Disney Lorcana: Rules, Costs, Timing, and Variants

Shift is an alternate way to play a character from your hand. Reveal the Shift character, choose a legal character already in play, pay the printed Shift number in ink instead of the card’s normal ink cost, and place the new card on top of the existing character. Standard Shift requires the character underneath to have the same name. The stack keeps the underlying character’s damage and status, so a shifted character can act immediately only when that underlying state permits it.

What Shift does in Disney Lorcana

A card with Shift offers a second play cost. You may play it normally by paying its printed ink cost, or you may use Shift by paying the smaller number printed beside the Shift ability and placing the card on a qualifying character you already control. You do not pay both costs.

The new card goes directly on top of the qualifying character. The cards become one stack in your play area. The top card is the character you are using for its visible abilities and statistics, while the cards beneath remain important for effects that refer to the stack, for leaving-play decisions, and for preserving damage or exertion.

Standard Shift’s reminder text is written in this form: “Shift (You may pay N {I} to play this on top of one of your characters named X.)” The name requirement is exact: the character already in play must match the name specified by the Shift card. Cards with Duo Shift, Combo Shift, Team Shift, or Temporary Shift use their own printed requirements instead.

How to use Shift: the complete procedure

  1. Identify the alternate cost. Check that the card in your hand has Shift and note the number printed in its Shift reminder text.
  2. Check the base character. For ordinary Shift, confirm that you control a character already in play with the required name. If the card has a different Shift variant, follow that variant’s requirement rather than assuming the standard same-name rule.
  3. Announce Shift. State that you are playing the card using its Shift alternate cost. This matters because the game must know which cost you are choosing before payment is made.
  4. Pay the Shift cost. Exert the required amount of ink. Apply any cost modification that the current comprehensive rules allow for this alternate play.
  5. Place the card on top. Put the Shift card directly over the qualifying character. Keep the underlying card or cards aligned beneath it as one stack.
  6. Resolve play or Shift effects. Follow any effect on the card and any rule that triggers when the character is played or shifted. If an effect changes what happens, resolve it in the order required by the current rules.

If you cannot identify a legal base character, you cannot use Shift, even if you have enough ink. You may still play the card normally, provided you can pay its regular cost and meet any other requirements.

What the Shift cost replaces

The number in the Shift reminder text is the complete alternate play cost. A Shift 3 card costs three ink when shifted; its printed normal cost is not added on top. Conversely, if you choose the normal play method, you pay the normal ink cost and do not need a qualifying character underneath.

Play method Ink paid Base character required? Where the card goes
Normal play The card’s printed ink cost No, unless another card effect says so Into play as a new character
Standard Shift The printed Shift number Yes; a character with the specified matching name On top of that character
Duo, Combo, Team, or Temporary Shift The printed alternate cost for that variant Follow the variant’s printed names and conditions On top of the qualifying character or characters

Cost reductions and free-play effects

Official set notes explain that effects allowing a Floodborn character to be played for free or for less ink can apply when you use Shift, subject to the current comprehensive rules. The important limitation is that you still choose one legal alternate-cost method; you cannot combine two separate alternate-cost permissions unless the rules specifically allow that combination.

When a card effect reduces the amount you must pay, apply the reduction to the cost you actually chose. If you announced Shift, begin with the Shift number rather than the card’s normal ink cost. If the resulting cost is zero under a legal effect, you still need a qualifying base character unless the effect also changes that requirement.

Which characters can you Shift onto?

Standard Shift: one matching name

Ordinary Shift uses a single base character whose name matches the name printed in the reminder text. The base must already be in your play area when you announce the Shift. A character with a similar title, artwork, version, or description does not qualify unless the card’s text explicitly makes it eligible.

Duo Shift: two named bases

Duo Shift requires two characters: one matching each of the two names identified by the card. Both qualifying characters are placed underneath the Shift card, and you choose the order in which those two base cards are arranged. This is different from standard Shift because one matching character is not enough.

Combo Shift: one or both names

Combo Shift combines the standard and Duo possibilities. It lets you Shift onto one matching character or onto both matching characters, according to the card’s text. Using one base follows the single-name route; using both gives you the combined stack described by the Duo requirement.

Team Shift: either member of a dual-named card

When a dual-named card uses Team Shift, it can be played on top of either named character. Team Shift therefore does not require both characters in the way Duo Shift does. Read the exact reminder text on the card, because the word “Team” signals this special eligibility rule.

Temporary Shift: a return-to-hand condition

Temporary Shift places the card on a qualifying base for a limited period. At the end of the turn, if the stack is still in play, the Temporary Shift card returns to your hand and the damage on that returned card is removed. The underlying base remains in the play area unless another effect has changed the stack.

If the Temporary Shift card was banished before the end of the turn, it does not return to your hand; it stays in the discard pile. That distinction makes removal effects a central risk when deciding whether to use a Temporary Shift ability.

Can a shifted character quest or challenge immediately?

Yes, a shifted character may quest or challenge during the turn it is played when the underlying character’s state allows that action. Shift itself does not ready a character and does not erase restrictions inherited from the base.

If the base character was ready and eligible

When the character underneath was already dry and otherwise able to act, the new top card can quest or challenge immediately. You still follow the normal requirements for the chosen action, such as having a legal challenge target.

If the base character was exerted or restricted

If the base character was exerted, the shifted character remains exerted. It cannot quest or challenge until it becomes ready through the normal game process or a card effect. The same principle applies to other status restrictions that remain on the stack.

Do not treat Shift as a readying effect. The timing advantage comes from preserving an eligible base, not from automatically refreshing the character.

What happens to damage and status when you Shift?

Shifting does not clear damage. Damage counters on the underlying character remain on the stack unless a card effect specifically removes them. The official FAQ answers the question directly: “Does shifting a character remove damage counters? A: No, any damage remains.”

Exertion and other status effects likewise remain unless an effect says otherwise. A damaged or exerted base can therefore produce a stronger top card that is still carrying the same risk. Before shifting, consider whether the incoming character can survive with the existing damage and whether its immediate action is actually available.

What happens when a shifted stack leaves play?

For an ordinary shifted stack, if the top character leaves play, the top card moves to the discard pile or to whatever destination the effect specifies. The cards underneath remain in the play zone unless a specific effect changes that result. This means a banish effect aimed at the visible top character does not automatically remove every card beneath it.

Temporary Shift is the important exception to remember: its top card can return to your hand at the end of the turn if the stack is still in play, but a Temporary Shift card that was banished remains in the discard pile. Always check the exact effect when a card moves, because replacement text can override the ordinary stack result.

How to evaluate a Shift play

Shift is most valuable when the alternate cost, the base character’s survival, and the timing of the new top card line up. Use these questions before committing ink:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cost gap: How much ink does Shift save compared with normal play, and would another play make better use of the same ink?
  • Base reliability: Can you keep a legal matching character in play long enough to use the Shift card, or is the base likely to be removed first?
  • Current state: Is the base dry and ready, or will the new card inherit exertion and lose its opportunity to quest or challenge?
  • Damage tolerance: Can the top character safely carry the damage already on the stack?
  • Stack value: Does placing the card on top preserve a useful base for later effects, or expose several cards to a disadvantage if the stack is disrupted?
  • Variant risk: Does Duo, Combo, Team, or Temporary Shift add a positioning, naming, or end-of-turn condition that changes the payoff?
Situation Likely implication What to verify first
Healthy, ready matching base Immediate questing or challenging may be available That the top card has no separate restriction
Exerted matching base The shifted card remains exerted Whether waiting for a ready turn is safer
Heavily damaged base Damage carries onto the new character Whether the new card can survive the existing counters
Two matching bases for Duo Shift You can satisfy the two-name requirement The required names and preferred base-card order
Temporary Shift facing removal The card may be banished instead of returning to hand Whether the stack will still be in play at end of turn

Worked examples

Example 1: Choosing Shift instead of normal play

You have a card in hand with a normal cost of 7 and Shift 3, and you control the exact character name listed in its reminder text. You announce Shift, exert three ink, and place the card on top of that character. The seven-ink cost is not paid. If you instead play it normally, you pay seven ink and do not use the base character.

  • A GREAT GIFT FOR FANS:The perfect surprise for Disney lovers, card collectors, or players—this gift box delivers magical gameplay and collecting fun for any Scrooge McDuck or Lorcana fan.

Example 2: An exerted base

Your matching character quested earlier in the turn and is exerted. You can still Shift the new card onto it if all other requirements are legal, but the new top card inherits the exerted state. It cannot quest or challenge immediately merely because the card itself was just played.

Example 3: Existing damage

Your matching base has damage counters, and you Shift a stronger character onto it. The counters stay on the stack. The new character must be evaluated with that damage already present; Shift is not a healing action.

Example 4: Temporary Shift and banishment

You use Temporary Shift during your turn. If the stack survives until the end of that turn, the Temporary Shift card returns to your hand with its damage removed. If an effect banishes that card first, it remains in the discard pile instead, so the temporary return never occurs.

Rules checks for unusual interactions

When a card effect changes a Shift play, check four things in order: the exact Shift variant named on the card, the alternate cost you announced, the current state of every base card, and the destination specified if a card leaves play. These checks resolve most disputes without relying on assumptions from another card or set.

For edge cases, use the current Ravensburger comprehensive-rules document. Ravensburger’s official resources hub records a 07/09/26 update for the rules resource; use the version currently posted there rather than an older downloaded copy. Attack of the Vine! release notes provide the detailed procedures for Duo, Combo, and Temporary Shift, while the developer article explains Shift-base design examples and the official FAQ/set notes cover damage and cost-reduction clarifications.

Quick reference

  • Shift is an alternate play cost, not an additional cost.
  • Standard Shift requires a matching-name character already in play.
  • The Shift card goes on top of the base and forms a stack.
  • Damage, exertion, and other status remain unless an effect removes them.
  • A ready, eligible base can let the shifted character quest or challenge immediately; an exerted or restricted base does not.
  • Duo requires two named bases, Combo allows one or both, Team allows either named member, and Temporary returns its card to hand only if the stack remains in play until the end of the turn.
