To generate directory thumbnails with Screenshotlayer, send each website URL to its screenshot API with your access key, a consistent viewport, and a target image width. Its example uses a 1440×900 viewport and a 300-pixel thumbnail width; treat those as starting values, not universal design rules. Make the request from your server, store or export the resulting image, and display it in the directory card.
How the thumbnail workflow fits together
A directory usually needs one stable preview image per listed site, not a new capture every time someone opens a directory page. A practical flow is to save the canonical URL for each entry, request its screenshot from a backend job, store the returned image or send it to a supported export destination, and refresh it on a schedule that fits your content policy.

- Save a canonical target URL for each directory entry.
- From a server-side job, call Screenshotlayer with the target URL, access key, viewport, and image width.
- Save the returned image URL or configure an available export destination such as AWS S3 or FTP.
- Render the thumbnail in the directory card, and refresh it deliberately rather than on every page view.
Screenshotlayer describes its service as a REST API for website screenshots. Its product pages list PNG, JPEG, and GIF output, configurable viewport and thumbnail width, custom headers, capture delay, caching controls, and exports to AWS S3 or FTP. Feature availability and request syntax should be confirmed against the current documentation and plan details before launch: Screenshotlayer API, FAQ.
Construct a request with consistent thumbnail settings
Choose the viewport and output width
The viewport controls the browser-like area used to render the page, so it can change which responsive layout appears. The Screenshotlayer example uses a 1440×900 viewport and a width of 300 pixels. Those are example values; choose settings based on your card design and keep them consistent across entries. Its FAQ identifies the width parameter as the way to request a custom thumbnail width.

Confirm the API endpoint before production
Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says each request needs a personal access key attached to the API base URL. Its landing-page example shows the parameters access_key, url, viewport, and width, but the hostname displayed in that sample appears to contain a typo. Do not copy that hostname blindly: confirm the exact endpoint and current syntax in Screenshotlayer’s documentation or interactive request builder before deploying. The vendor material cited here does not establish an independently verified endpoint string suitable for a production-ready code sample.
Encode target URLs safely
Target URLs commonly contain query strings and reserved characters. Use a URL-encoding function or an HTTP client’s parameter support rather than concatenating an unescaped URL into a request. Keep the access key server-side; do not place it in browser JavaScript, public HTML, or a client-visible image URL unless Screenshotlayer explicitly documents a secure mechanism for that use.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Set output format, rendering controls, and caching
- Image format: Screenshotlayer’s FAQ lists PNG as the default and JPEG and GIF as alternatives. Its pricing page lists WebP support for paid plans. Check current plan coverage and the exact parameter for the format you need before relying on it.
- Delay and headers: The FAQ lists a capture delay and custom User-Agent and Accept-Language headers. They can help when a page needs extra rendering time or you need a particular language or device context, but no delay guarantees that every dynamic page will finish rendering.
- Cache and refresh: The FAQ states that screenshots are cached for 2,592,000 seconds (30 days) by default, and that the
ttlparameter can set a lower value. The product page also describes a force-refresh option. Confirm current syntax, and choose a refresh policy that balances freshness against request use. - Storage exports: The product page advertises exports to AWS S3 or FTP, while the pricing page associates export options with higher tiers. Verify that your selected plan includes the destination and workflow you intend to use.
Some sites may render differently or block automated captures. The vendor lists rendering controls but does not promise success for every website. Make the directory resilient: detect missing or failed images and show a local placeholder rather than leaving a broken image in the card.

Screenshotlayer describes the access key as a personal credential, and its terms say account holders are responsible for keeping credentials secure. Keep the key in a backend environment variable or a protected job secret. Do not expose it in client-side code. Common problems and practical fixes
- The API returns an error before capture: Check that the endpoint is the current documented hostname, the access key is valid, and every parameter is encoded correctly. The landing-page sample hostname noted above appears to contain a typo, so confirm it with the vendor’s current request builder.
- The thumbnail shows the wrong layout: Review the viewport dimensions. A different viewport can trigger a different responsive breakpoint on the target site.
- The image is stale: The default cache period stated in the FAQ is 30 days. Check whether your request uses a lower
ttlor the documented force-refresh option, and verify the current parameter syntax. - The screenshot is incomplete or blank: Try a suitable capture delay or the supported headers, then handle continued failures with a placeholder. The official material does not guarantee capture success for every website.
- The format or export destination is unavailable: Check whether the feature is supported on your current plan and confirm its present API syntax; WebP is listed for paid plans and export options are associated with higher tiers.
- The allowance is exhausted or fees appear: Check the account’s usage notices, plan allowance, and current overage terms. Notifications are described at 75%, 90%, and 100% usage, but verify the live billing rules.
- The key appears in browser traffic: Move capture requests into a backend job and rotate any exposed credential according to the account’s security process.
