Find it under Settings > Display or in Quick Settings. You can let it adjust automatically or choose a schedule and screen warmth yourself. The setting changes the display’s color; it is not a proven treatment for eye disease or a guaranteed way to sleep better.
What Samsung’s blue-light setting does
When enabled, the display takes on a warmer, often slightly yellow tint. Samsung says Eye comfort shield can adjust screen colors according to external factors, including outdoor brightness. How the feature looks and which controls are available depend on the device and software.

Samsung’s support guidance uses Eye comfort shield for devices running One UI 3.1 or later and Blue light filter for devices on One UI 2.5, One UI 3, or earlier. These are version guidelines, not a guarantee that every Galaxy model or regional software version will show the same name. Samsung also notes that Eye comfort shield is not available on all phone models. Samsung Canada’s support guide was last updated September 16, 2024; Samsung US support also notes model availability may vary.

How the two names and controls differ
| Setting | Samsung’s software guidance | Controls described by Samsung |
|---|---|---|
| Eye comfort shield | One UI 3.1 or later, subject to device and regional variation | Adaptive or Custom; Custom includes scheduling and color-temperature controls |
| Blue light filter | One UI 2.5, One UI 3, or earlier | Older menus may include an opacity slider and scheduled activation |
How to turn it on
- Open Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield on a supported device, then switch it on. If your phone uses the older name, look for Blue light filter in Display settings instead.
- Or swipe down to open Quick Settings and tap the Eye comfort shield or Blue light filter tile. If the tile is not there, edit Quick Settings to add it. Samsung notes that screens and menu details vary by model and software.
- To change the behavior rather than just switch it on, open the setting in Display settings. On older Blue light filter menus, touch and hold its Quick Settings tile to reach controls such as opacity and scheduling.
If neither name appears, your model or software may not support the feature, or Samsung may use different menu wording on your regional version. Check the Display section and your phone’s available Quick Settings tiles rather than assuming the option is present on every Galaxy device.

Choose Adaptive or set a schedule
On supported Eye comfort shield devices, choose between automatic adjustment and controls you set yourself. Samsung documents these options in its Galaxy eye-fatigue support guide.
Adaptive
Choose Adaptive if you want the phone to change screen colors according to the time of day. It requires less manual setup, but it gives you less control over the timing and warmth than Custom.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Custom
Choose Custom to select a color temperature and decide when the filter runs. Samsung documents three schedule choices:
- Always on: Keep the setting active.
- Sunset to sunrise: Use the phone’s location to determine local sunset and sunrise.
- Custom: Choose a start and stop time.
The color-temperature slider changes how warm the display looks. Samsung documents the adjustment but does not identify one ideal setting for everyone. Because the warmer tint changes how colors appear, consider reducing it or switching it off temporarily for color-sensitive work.

Eye comfort shield is not Dark mode or Extra dim
Samsung lists Dark mode and Extra dim as separate display options. Dark mode changes the appearance of device menus, settings, and preloaded Samsung apps; third-party apps may not follow it. Extra dim lowers screen brightness. Eye comfort shield changes screen color tone instead. You can choose among these controls according to what you want to change, but they do different things. Samsung US support describes these as distinct options.
What evidence says about eye strain and sleep
Samsung presents the filter as a way to limit blue light and help with eye fatigue, but the clinical evidence cited here does not establish that Eye comfort shield relieves eye strain, treats an eye condition, or improves sleep. The main systematic-review evidence concerns blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses, not a phone’s built-in software filter, so its results cannot be directly transferred to Samsung’s setting.

A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 randomized trials involving 619 participants found that blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses may not reduce short-term eye strain associated with computer use compared with non-filtering lenses. For sleep, six trials involving 148 participants produced mixed results: three reported improvement and three found no significant difference. The review searched studies through March 22, 2022. These findings concern lenses, not Eye comfort shield. Read the Cochrane review.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says that small amounts of blue light from screens have not been shown to harm eyes, and that digital discomfort is more closely associated with device misuse or overuse than blue light. Its practical guidance includes reducing evening screen exposure and using night or dark mode. That is not evidence that Samsung’s filter prevents retinal damage or treats eye strain. Read the Academy’s guidance on blue light and digital eye strain.

When the warmer tint is useful—or inconvenient
If a warmer screen looks more comfortable to you, try Adaptive or set a Custom schedule and adjust the temperature to your preference. If you need consistent color for photo editing or other color-sensitive work, the tint may be inconvenient; lower it or turn the feature off while working. These are practical display preferences, not medical recommendations, and there is no single setting established as best for everyone.
