Fitness apps can help people become more active on average, but they do not guarantee that someone will keep using an app, follow a plan, or maintain a routine. AI may make coaching and feedback more personalized or timely; current evidence does not show that it fixes adherence for everyone.
Do fitness apps actually work?
Digital activity programs can increase physical activity on average, but the evidence combines different kinds of interventions and participants—not just consumer fitness apps, and not specifically AI apps. A 2024 umbrella review in npj Digital Medicine pooled evidence from 47 meta-analyses covering 507 randomized trials and 206,873 participants. After interventions, participants averaged 1,329 more steps per day and 44.8 more minutes of total physical activity per week than comparison groups. The authors also reported substantial variation across studies, so those pooled averages are not a promise for an individual or a particular app. Read the umbrella review.

Whether an app “works” depends on what is measured. Opening an app is engagement; doing the workouts or activities a plan calls for is adherence; and taking more steps or exercising more is a physical-activity outcome. These can influence one another, but they are not interchangeable. A person can use an app without becoming more active, or become more active without opening it every day.

What happens after active support ends?
The umbrella review’s limited follow-up analyses were less certain: they did not find statistically significant effects for steps or total physical activity at follow-up. That makes it important to distinguish a change during an intervention from a lasting change after reminders, coaching, or other support stop.

Why an app may not become a lasting routine
Apps differ in their goals, self-monitoring, feedback, reminders, social features, and coaching. Studies also use different populations, outcome measures, and time windows. As a result, one intervention’s average activity gain cannot establish how often a specific app will be used or whether its users will stick to a workout schedule.
Practical barriers can matter too: a plan may not fit a person’s schedule, ability, equipment, preferences, or changing circumstances. Prompts cannot automatically remove discomfort or make an unrealistic plan workable. These are plausible reasons a digital plan may not translate into a routine, not causes quantified by the reviews cited here.
There is no single dropout percentage that safely describes all consumer fitness apps. Studies define disengagement differently and track it for different lengths of time, so a headline figure from one app or study should not be generalized to every user or product.
What AI can—and cannot—change
AI coaching interventions reviewed in 2025 used features such as personalized content, educational support, activity or engagement monitoring, motivational prompts, questionnaires, and, in some cases, goal setting. The review found generally positive physical-activity trends in AI-only coaching studies, but results varied by intervention and measure. Findings for hybrid approaches involving both AI and people were mixed. Read the AI and health-coaching review.

Personalization and prompt timing are potential advantages: a system can tailor content or deliver a reminder based on information it collects. But the evidence does not establish that AI itself is the active ingredient, that a consumer chatbot is equivalent to a studied coaching intervention, or that automated guidance will solve a person’s practical barriers or sustain motivation.
Some studied interventions included human oversight, with a coach monitoring, modifying, or validating AI recommendations. That is different from relying on automated advice alone. If a service describes itself as AI-powered, look at what it actually adapts, what a human reviews, and what outcomes were measured rather than treating the label as proof of effectiveness.
Do reminders, rewards, and gamification help?
They may contribute, but the measured average effect was small. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 36 trials involving 10,079 participants compared digital health applications with and without gamification. Gamified apps produced a mean difference of 489 steps per day, which the authors described as trivial; some body-composition outcomes also changed modestly. This supports a limited average benefit in the studied interventions, not a guarantee that points, streaks, or challenges will keep a particular person engaged. Read the gamification review.

Judge the fit and the evidence, not simply the number of features or whether a product uses AI. These questions help separate a plausible aid from a promise of guaranteed results:

- Evidence: Which outcome was measured, in whom, and over what period? Was benefit checked after active support ended?
- Practical fit: Consider accessibility, privacy, price, compatibility, and whether the exercise format suits you.
A 2025 review of standalone digital behavior-change interventions included multiple formats, including apps and wearables, and randomized trials; it does not establish the effectiveness of every commercial product. Read the review of standalone digital interventions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a fitness tracker watch necessary?
No. A phone or wearable you already own may be enough to measure steps or activity. A fitness tracker watch can be an optional measurement tool, but the reviewed evidence does not show that buying a tracker by itself makes people adhere to an exercise plan or prevents disengagement.
How to set a more realistic test for yourself
- Choose one outcome. Decide whether you want to track app use, follow a workout plan, or increase activity; do not treat these as the same goal.
- Check the plan against your week. Select an activity and schedule that work with your current ability, equipment, and available time.
- Use the simplest workable tracking method. Start with a phone or device you already have if it measures what you care about.
- Review whether the support helps. Notice whether feedback, reminders, or coaching make the plan easier to follow, rather than assuming more notifications or AI features are better.
- Reassess beyond the initial push. If the app’s active prompts or coaching end, consider whether the activity continues; short-term engagement alone does not establish a lasting routine.
Evidence in other settings also illustrates why results should not be transferred too broadly: a 2023 review of personalized exercise-video apps for rehabilitation found adherence evidence uncertain. That population and intervention differ from general consumer fitness apps, so it is a caution about the limits of inference—not a dropout estimate for mainstream apps. Read the rehabilitation app review.
