What should an agent observability platform show?
Agent traces are useful only when they expose enough of a run to explain what happened and support a fix. A top-level request duration or model response alone may not reveal a slow retrieval call, a failed tool, a retry loop, or a child agent that changed the result.
- Trace completeness: Check whether a trace can show model calls, retrieval, tool calls, nested work, retries, and session context. Ask for a demonstration using your actual framework and representative run.
- Actionable debugging: Verify that an engineer can move from a failed or slow production run to the relevant operation and its timing, then use the case to improve the application.
- Evaluation workflow: Look for a path from production examples to datasets, experiments, automated evaluators, and human review. Test whether the team can compare a change on the same inputs and retain regression coverage.
- Cost visibility: Determine which calls and operations are represented in usage or cost views, including retries and evaluator model calls where applicable.
- Operational fit: Confirm access controls, data handling, retention, and deployment terms for your organization with the vendor. These can vary by plan and change over time.
How the leading options differ
LangSmith: a natural first evaluation for LangChain and LangGraph teams
LangSmith is closely aligned with LangChain and LangGraph tracing and execution views. LangChain’s production guidance emphasizes traces, evaluation datasets, human review, and converting production failures into repeatable test coverage. It is not limited to applications built with LangChain: an Arize-authored comparison also describes support for other frameworks and OpenTelemetry instrumentation. Confirm how well its capture matches your particular stack rather than assuming every operation is recorded automatically.

Langfuse: broad engineering workflows with a self-hosting option
Langfuse documents traces for LLM and non-LLM work, including retrieval, embeddings, and API calls; sessions for multi-turn conversations; and graph views for agents. Its documented capture routes include SDKs, framework integrations, OpenTelemetry, and gateways. The platform also combines observability with prompt, evaluation, dataset, and experiment workflows. Self-hosting gives the team deployment control, but also makes that team responsible for operating the supporting infrastructure.
Arize Phoenix and Arize AX: distinguish self-managed from managed
Phoenix is the self-managed, open-source option in Arize’s ecosystem. Its documentation describes traces, evaluation tests, prompt iteration using production examples, and experiments that compare changes on the same inputs. Phoenix is built on OpenTelemetry and OpenInference. Arize AX is the managed enterprise platform; evaluate it separately from Phoenix when deployment model, operational ownership, or enterprise requirements matter.

Datadog Agent Observability: correlate agents with existing operations telemetry
Datadog is most compelling when a team already operates production systems in Datadog and needs agent traces correlated with broader application, infrastructure, and user-experience telemetry. The cited comparison describes it as SaaS rather than self-hosted and identifies LLM spans as its principal pricing meter. Because evaluator model calls count as spans in that comparison, include evaluation activity when estimating usage.

The vendor-authored comparison presents Braintrust as evaluation-first, Helicone around request, session, usage, and cost visibility with a gateway-centered workflow, and Fiddler as an enterprise option covering agent observability, governance, and model risk. Those descriptions are useful starting points, not independent rankings. Check current product documentation and test the workflows that matter to your team.

How should you compare pricing?
Do not compare headline prices until you know what each provider counts. An Arize-authored pricing comparison updated August 10, 2026, says plan details were checked against vendor-published pages on August 7, 2026. It lists these different billing meters:
| Platform | Meter described in the August 2026 comparison | What to include in an estimate |
|---|---|---|
| LangSmith | Traces and seats | Trace volume and the number of users, then verify current plan limits and retention. |
| Langfuse | Traces, observations, and scores as units | How many counted units a typical run and its evaluation workflow generate. |
| Braintrust | Processed data and scores | Data processed and score volume for both routine and evaluation workloads. |
| Datadog | LLM spans | Model and evaluator calls, plus the effect of retries and agent fan-out on span volume. |
| Arize AX | Spans and ingested data | Span volume and data ingestion under a representative mix of runs. |
These meters are not interchangeable, and the comparison does not establish a like-for-like cost-per-million figure. A single agent task can expand into model calls, retrieval, tools, sub-agents, retries, and evaluator calls; estimate each vendor’s meter using a sample of your own traffic. Then confirm current plan terms directly with the vendor, since included volumes and tiers can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you keep instrumentation portable?
OpenTelemetry’s Generative AI semantic conventions provide a standards-based place to look for common telemetry attributes. Phoenix says it is built on OpenTelemetry and OpenInference; Langfuse documents OpenTelemetry as one of its capture routes, alongside native SDK and framework integrations. These paths can reduce instrumentation fragmentation, but standards support alone does not prove that your framework emits every field or nested operation you need.

- Ask each shortlisted vendor to show model, retrieval, tool, retry, and session capture using your framework and a representative agent run.
- Check whether useful context survives the path from your application instrumentation into the platform, including nested operations and identifiers needed to investigate a run.
- Confirm how much vendor-specific instrumentation is required and what changes would be needed if you switched platforms.
How to run a useful platform evaluation
- Choose representative traffic. Include a normal run, a run with retrieval and tool use, a failure or retry, and a multi-turn session if those are part of your product.
- Instrument the actual application. Use the framework integration, SDK, or OpenTelemetry route you expect to keep in production.
- Inspect trace completeness. Follow each run through model calls, retrieval, tools, nested work, latency, and cost information; note any missing fields or operations.
- Exercise the quality loop. Use production examples in a dataset, run an evaluation or experiment, review results, and check whether a discovered failure can become repeatable regression coverage.
- Estimate the bill from observed usage. Apply each provider’s current meter to the sampled traffic, including retries, agent fan-out, and evaluator calls where counted.
- Review operating and data terms. Compare managed versus self-managed responsibility, retention, access, and data handling against your requirements before choosing a plan.
There is no independent adoption, market-share, or performance statistic in the available evidence that supports declaring an overall winner. The practical choice is the platform that captures your actual agent workflow, supports the way your team investigates and evaluates changes, meets its deployment needs, and has a meter you can forecast.
