Reg-suit does not open an Angular page or take screenshots. It compares image files produced by a separate capture step, identifies visual differences against a stored baseline, creates an HTML report, and can publish snapshots and notifications. A reliable Angular workflow is therefore: serve the application, capture deterministic screenshots with Puppeteer or a Storybook workflow, place those files in Reg-suit’s actualDir, then run npx reg-suit run in CI.
What Reg-suit does—and what it does not do
Reg-suit is the comparison and reporting layer in a visual-regression pipeline. The project describes its job as comparing current images with previous images and creating an HTML difference report. It can synchronize expected snapshots, compare the current set, publish reports and images through a configured publisher, and send notifications through optional plugins.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is not a browser automation framework. It does not render Angular routes, click controls, wait for API responses, or produce PNG files. Those tasks belong to your capture script or Storybook screenshot tool. Reg-suit consumes the resulting files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Pipeline stage | Typical tool | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Build and serve | Angular CLI or your CI web server | A reachable Angular application |
| Capture | Puppeteer against routes, or Storybook screenshot tooling against stories | Stable PNG, JPEG or WebP files |
| Compare | Reg-suit | Difference data and an HTML report |
| Publish and notify | Reg-suit publisher and notifier plugins | Stored snapshots, report links and optional pull-request messages |
The most common wiring error is a directory mismatch: the capture script writes to one folder while Reg-suit’s actualDir points to another. Make the directory explicit and verify that files exist before starting the comparison.

Choose a capture strategy for Angular
Puppeteer for complete routes and pages
Puppeteer is the natural choice when you want screenshots of complete Angular URLs: a landing page, a dashboard route, a checkout flow or a page assembled from several components. The browser can set a fixed viewport, inject CSS, wait for application-specific readiness, scroll to trigger lazy loading and save full-page images.
Storybook for isolated component states
Storybook is better when the unit under review is a component state rather than a production route. A story can represent an empty table, a validation error, a long label or a mobile navigation state without requiring the whole application and its backend data. Reg-suit’s Angular examples include Storybook-based screenshot workflows.
Check the capture add-on’s current framework and Storybook compatibility before committing to it. One screenshot repository lists an Angular demo while also listing Angular support as unfinished, so the existence of an example is not proof that a current version works with your project. The Storycapture listing describes Puppeteer-based, framework-independent screenshot generation that includes Angular, but package maintenance and version compatibility still need verification.

Prerequisites and project layout
- An Angular application that can be built and served in the CI environment.
- Node.js and npm versions pinned by your project, with dependencies installed using
npm ci. - Puppeteer and a browser executable if you capture routes directly.
- A dedicated screenshot directory, such as
screenshots/, that is available to the Reg-suit process. - A decision about the comparison key and snapshot storage. A Git-hash key is useful when each commit should have a distinct result; a simpler key can suit a single protected branch.
- Credentials supplied through CI secret storage when you publish to external storage. Do not commit cloud keys to the repository.
A practical repository layout is:
capture.js
screenshots/
.reg-suit.json
package.json
Build a deterministic Puppeteer capture
Visual comparison only helps when the same state produces the same pixels. Fix the viewport, use stable test data, load the same fonts, disable animations and wait for an application-specific ready condition instead of relying only on a short sleep.
Install Puppeteer
npm install --save-dev puppeteer
Create a capture script
The following script captures two Angular routes at a fixed desktop viewport. Change the route list and readiness selector to match your application. The selector should be rendered only after the page has finished the work that affects the screenshot.
const fs = require('node:fs');
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
const baseUrl = 'http://127.0.0.1:4200';
const routes = [
{ name: 'home', path: '/', ready: '[data-visual-ready="home"]' },
{ name: 'pricing', path: '/pricing', ready: '[data-visual-ready="pricing"]' }
];
(async () => {
fs.mkdirSync('screenshots', { recursive: true });
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
args: process.env.CI ? ['--no-sandbox', '--disable-setuid-sandbox'] : []
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.emulateTimezone('UTC');
await page.setExtraHTTPHeaders({ 'Accept-Language': 'en-US,en;q=0.9' });
for (const route of routes) {
await page.goto(baseUrl + route.path, { waitUntil: 'networkidle0', timeout: 90000 });
await page.addStyleTag({ content: '* { animation: none !important; transition: none !important; caret-color: transparent !important; }' });
await page.waitForSelector(route.ready, { visible: true, timeout: 30000 });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = 600;
for (let y = 0; y < document.body.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 50));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
await page.screenshot({
path: `screenshots/${route.name}.png`,
fullPage: true,
captureBeyondViewport: true
});
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The scroll pass is useful for Angular pages that load images only when they approach the viewport. If your application has a dedicated loading indicator, replace the data attribute with that selector and wait for it to disappear as well. Avoid a fixed delay as the only readiness check: a fast CI run may capture before data arrives, while a slow run merely wastes time.

Serve Angular before capturing
For a production-like run, build first and serve the generated files with the server used by your project. For a straightforward CI job using the Angular development server:
npm ci
npx ng build
npx ng serve --host 127.0.0.1 --port 4200 > angular.log 2>&1 &
node capture.js
npx reg-suit run
In a real pipeline, add a health check that waits for port 4200 and a known route before starting Puppeteer. Keep the server process alive until capture and Reg-suit have completed.
Initialize Reg-suit and point it at the images
Run the initializer
npx reg-suit init
The initializer asks for the actual image directory and lets you select key-generation, publishing and notification plugins. Choose the directory used by the capture script—in this example, screenshots. The project documents Git-hash and simple key-generation options, publishers such as object storage, and optional notifier integrations.
Review the core configuration
A minimal core configuration can look like this:
{
"core": {
"workingDir": "tmp/reg",
"actualDir": "screenshots",
"thresholdRate": 0
}
}
workingDir is Reg-suit’s scratch area. actualDir must contain the files produced by the current capture. thresholdRate controls the tolerated difference rate; treat the initializer’s example as an illustration, not a universal value. A zero threshold is strict and can expose tiny rendering changes, while a higher threshold can hide changes you would rather review. Set it deliberately after observing your own font, browser and rendering stability.
Select a comparison key
The key determines which expected snapshot Reg-suit compares with the current images. A Git-hash key makes the result traceable to a commit and works well when reports are published for pull requests. A simpler key can be appropriate when one branch continuously updates a single baseline. The correct choice depends on how your team reviews and accepts changes; the capture files and comparison logic remain the same.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Run the first baseline and subsequent comparisons
- Build or serve the Angular application.
- Run the capture script and confirm that every expected file exists under
screenshots/. - Run
npx reg-suit run. The command combines expected-image synchronization, comparison, publishing and optional notification according to your configuration. - Open the generated report and inspect every new or changed item.
- If the visual change is intentional, accept it through your team’s baseline process. If it is accidental, fix the application or capture setup and rerun the job.
On the first run there is no previous snapshot, so images appear as new items. Once that result is published, later runs compare current files with the expected set. Do not automatically approve the first run: it establishes the reference that all later reviews depend on.

Lower-level commands when debugging
Reg-suit also exposes separate operations for synchronizing expected images, comparing and publishing. Use those lower-level commands when you need to identify whether the problem is missing baseline data, a comparison failure or a publisher failure; use run for the normal combined workflow.
Use Storybook when component states are the target
Create stories for the states that matter visually: loading, empty, populated, error, long content, keyboard focus and responsive layouts. Keep network calls out of the story or replace them with deterministic fixtures. Then run the chosen screenshot tool against those stories and write its files into the same actualDir used by Reg-suit.
Storybook does not remove the need for deterministic rendering. Pin the viewport, use stable fonts, disable motion and ensure that asynchronous decorators reach a known ready state. Verify the capture package against your Angular and Storybook versions before adding it to CI, especially when an example repository has conflicting statements about Angular support.
CI, storage and pull-request review
Order the job correctly
The essential order is checkout, dependency installation, Angular build or server startup, screenshot capture, Reg-suit comparison, and publication. Running Reg-suit before capture either produces an empty directory error or compares stale files from a previous workspace.
Store snapshots outside ephemeral runners
The Puppeteer example publishes snapshot images and HTML reports to an S3 bucket. S3 is an example backend, not a requirement of visual comparison; Reg-suit also describes external cloud storage such as Google Cloud Storage. Configure the publisher selected by the initializer and provide credentials through the CI provider’s secret-management facility.
Notify reviewers
An optional GitHub application and notifier plugin can add report information to pull requests. Notifications are useful only when the report is reachable by reviewers and the message identifies the commit or comparison key. Keep the notification step optional so a messaging outage does not erase the comparison result.

Treat old demos as architecture guides
Some published examples use older package versions and CircleCI 2.0 syntax. Use them to understand the sequence—capture first, then Reg-suit—not as copy-and-paste versions of your current dependencies, CI image or credentials configuration. Verify package versions and plugin status in the current project documentation before adoption.
Make screenshots stable enough to trust
- Data: seed fixtures or point tests at a controlled test API. Live prices, rotating recommendations and timestamps create false differences.
- Fonts: install the same font files in local and CI environments and wait for
document.fonts.readywhen text metrics affect layout. - Animations: disable transitions and animation, or wait for a known completed state.
- Viewport: use fixed width, height and device scale factor. Capture mobile and desktop as separate named images.
- Locale: set timezone, language and number/date formatting explicitly.
- Lazy content: scroll through long pages before taking a full-page screenshot, then return to the top.
- Authentication: create a dedicated test account or inject a controlled session; never place credentials in source files.
- External content: block or stub ads, analytics and third-party widgets whose output changes between runs.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Reg-suit says the actual directory is empty | Capture did not run, wrote elsewhere or failed before saving | List the directory immediately before npx reg-suit run; make the script and actualDir use the same path. |
| Every image is new on every commit | The key generator or publisher cannot retrieve the previous expected set | Check the configured key strategy, storage path and CI credentials; confirm that the previous report was published successfully. |
| Headless Chromium fails in CI | Sandbox restrictions or missing browser dependencies | Use the CI-safe launch flags shown above when required, install the dependencies recommended by your runner image and record the browser version. |
| Screenshots show a spinner or blank data | Capture begins before Angular’s asynchronous work finishes | Wait for an application-specific ready selector, deterministic API response or hidden loading indicator instead of increasing a blind delay. |
| Only long pages differ | Lazy-loaded images or viewport-triggered components were not activated | Scroll through the document before capture and ensure image loading has completed. |
| Text moves by a few pixels | Different fonts, device scale, locale or browser versions | Pin those inputs and capture with the same viewport and browser family in every environment. |
| Intentional redesign blocks the pull request | The baseline still represents the old design | Review the diff, merge the intended UI change, then update the expected snapshot through the normal baseline process. |
| Publishing fails after comparison succeeds | Storage or notification credentials are unavailable | Separate comparison from publication while debugging, rotate secrets through CI settings and verify bucket permissions and paths. |
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Capture time grows with the number of routes, viewport variants and browser launches. Reuse one browser process and create a new page per route when possible. Run independent routes in parallel only after confirming that your test data and backend can support concurrent requests without changing responses.
Full-page screenshots use more memory than viewport-only images, especially on pages with very tall DOM trees. Capture only the page extent that reviewers need, and split exceptionally long workflows into meaningful route or state images. Keep image names stable so a renamed route is treated as a deliberate addition rather than an accidental replacement.
Reg-suit itself has no required cloud storage cost: storage and notification expenses depend on the publisher and services you choose. The documented S3 workflow is one example. Your main operating costs are browser execution time, report storage and any hosted CI minutes.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a clean screenshot of a deployed Angular URL, ScreenshotNeo can perform the capture through one request. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

FAQ
Can Reg-suit replace Angular end-to-end tests?
No. It verifies rendered pixels. Keep functional, accessibility and end-to-end tests alongside visual comparison so a page can be both visually correct and behaviorally usable.
Should baselines be stored in Git?
That is a team policy decision. Reg-suit supports external publishers, and the documented examples use object storage so reports and snapshots are available to CI reviewers without enlarging the application repository.
How should I handle a browser-version upgrade?
Run the comparison in a controlled branch, inspect the resulting widespread diffs, and update the baseline only after confirming that the rendering change is an expected consequence of the upgrade.
