To get PaintTool SAI responding to a pressure-sensitive pen tablet, confirm which SAI version you have, install the tablet maker’s driver, and test pressure outside SAI before changing any SAI settings. Most input failures come from one of those three layers, and fixing them in that order avoids the most common mistake: changing SAI configuration when the driver is the real problem.
Step 1: Identify your SAI version and the tablet API it uses
PaintTool SAI is published by SYSTEMAX Software Development, and its versions do not all use the same tablet interface. Before you troubleshoot anything, identify which build you run and which input API it expects.

| Item | SAI Ver.1 (stable) | SAI Ver.2 (technical preview) |
|---|---|---|
| Platform stated by publisher | Windows, 32-bit (SYSTEMAX product page, accessed 2026-10-07) | Windows builds described on the publisher’s development page |
| Tablet API requirement | WinTab-compatible digitizer with pressure support | Pen tablets with WinTab API or TabletPC API support (SYSTEMAX development page) |
| Trial period | 31 days (SYSTEMAX product page) | Not stated |
| Status of latest build | Stable release | Stable technical preview announced 2026-07-02; major renovated technical preview announced 2026-09-25, which the publisher says may contain serious bugs |
If you are a beginner, the practical rule is simple: use Ver.1 for everyday drawing unless you have a specific reason to test a preview. Treat any Ver.2 preview as unfinished software, and keep backups of your work before you install it. You can check the current release notes on the PaintTool SAI product page and the PaintTool SAI Development Room.
Step 2: Install the tablet maker’s driver
SAI does not read pen pressure directly from the hardware. The publisher’s FAQ states that without the digitizer driver installed, the pen cannot send pressure or more precise cursor information to the application. Install the driver from the tablet maker, following the instructions supplied with your device.

Use the manufacturer’s current download and installation guide rather than a driver file from a third-party site, and restart Windows if the installer asks you to. Driver instructions differ between tablet models, so this article does not give model-specific installation steps.
Step 3: Test pressure outside SAI, then inside it
Once the driver is installed, confirm the tablet works before you open SAI. Use your tablet maker’s own test or settings utility to check that pen movement and pressure register. If they do not respond there, SAI will not fix the problem.
When the driver works, run through this check in SAI:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open SAI and create a new drawing area.
- Choose any pen-style brush from the tool panel.
- Make a short stroke, starting light and then pressing firmly. Line width or opacity should change with pressure.
- If the stroke stays a constant width, close SAI, check the driver again, and move to the matching symptom in the troubleshooting section below.
The publisher’s product page notes that SAI supports tablet pressure through the digitizer, which is the reason this test depends on the driver rather than on SAI settings alone.

Finding help for SAI’s controls
SAI’s own help is the most reliable place to learn individual tools. According to the product page, interface items have tooltips, and pressing F1 while the pointer is over an item opens the help documentation for it. Use that approach to learn brushes, canvas options and stabilizer controls.
The official pages supplied for this article do not provide a complete step-by-step tutorial for creating a canvas, choosing a brush and saving a first drawing. For a full workflow, use the current documentation on the publisher’s site rather than third-party menu paths, which can be out of date for a given version.
When pen input fails: troubleshooting by symptom
The publisher’s tablet FAQ lists several common failures. Match your symptom to the section below and work through the checks in order.
Application doesn’t recognize pressure
- Confirm the tablet driver is installed and that pressure works in the maker’s own test utility.
- Confirm your SAI version uses an API your tablet supports (see Step 1).
- If you use Ver.1 with a Microsoft Surface or another N-trig WinTab driver, see the workaround below.
Previously pressure worked, but now it doesn’t
This is often caused by a driver update, a Windows update or a changed tablet setting rather than by SAI itself. Check whether the tablet driver was updated recently, then consult the FAQ for your SAI version and the current driver help from your tablet maker before changing SAI options. Do not reset driver settings until you have read the warning in the Wacom section below.

Mouse cursor doesn’t move when the application starts
The publisher’s FAQ lists this as a reported symptom. Start by confirming the tablet driver is running and that the pen is recognized in Windows outside SAI. If the cursor responds only after the pen is lifted or moved out of range, the problem is usually in the driver’s mouse emulation, not in SAI’s drawing engine.
Drawing position is different from the mouse cursor position
A mismatch between where the stroke appears and where the pointer sits usually comes from the tablet’s mapping area or display settings. Recalibrate the tablet using the maker’s utility, and check whether you use a multi-monitor layout that the tablet does not map correctly.
Cannot draw fine strokes or stabilizer doesn’t work
Fine strokes that look coarse, or a stabilizer that appears to do nothing, can indicate that pressure or position data is not reaching SAI consistently. Confirm the driver first, then test a short stroke with the stabilizer set low to rule out an overly strong setting before you suspect the tablet.
Ver.1 with N-trig WinTab drivers (for example, Microsoft Surface)
The publisher states that SAI Ver.1 does not work correctly by default with N-trig WinTab drivers, such as the driver used by Microsoft Surface. According to the same FAQ, changing TabletMouseSimulation from 0 to 1 in misc.ini may make it work.

This is a conditional workaround, not a universal fix. Before you edit the file:
- Close SAI completely.
- Back up the existing
misc.inifile so you can restore it. - Change only the
TabletMouseSimulationvalue, then restart SAI and test pressure in a new drawing area. - If the change does not help, restore the backup. Do not keep changes you cannot explain.
Resetting Wacom driver preferences: read the warning first
For some Wacom-related problems, including lost pressure, cursor issues, stabilizer problems or pen-button failures, the publisher’s tablet FAQ suggests resetting the Wacom driver preferences. This is a reasonable step only after you have checked the basics above.
The reset removes your existing tablet settings. Pen button assignments, pressure curves, mapping and other customizations will need to be configured again. Write down the settings you use most before resetting, and follow the current reset instructions in the Wacom driver help for your operating system and driver version rather than older guides.

For a documented WinTab driver error in certain Wacom environments on the SAI Ver.2 major renovated technical preview, SYSTEMAX states that the issue is typically resolved by enabling Windows Ink in the pen tablet settings and changing [Pen Tablet Control API] to [Use Windows API] in the [Options] dialog in SAI. The developer’s quote is that this “should be resolved” by those changes.

This suggestion applies to that preview build in that specific environment. It does not establish that these settings are appropriate for every tablet, every Windows configuration or every SAI version. Save your work and create a backup of your files before you change any configuration, and revert the change if it does not solve the problem.
Choosing a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet
A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet, sometimes called a Wacom pen tablet, is the device category SAI requires. The publisher’s documentation confirms the need for pressure-capable digitizer support but does not certify any particular model.
Before buying a specific model, check four things against the SAI version you plan to use: the manufacturer’s current driver for your Windows version, the operating system support listed for that driver, pressure capability, and the API the version needs (WinTab for Ver.1; WinTab or TabletPC API for the Ver.2 preview). Drawing area size, pen ergonomics and price are personal choices and should be compared separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For the most current compatibility details, check the PaintTool SAI digitizer device FAQ and your tablet maker’s support pages.
In short, a working setup depends on three matching layers: a supported SAI version, a current tablet driver, and a documented fix that applies to your exact configuration.
Quick Recap
- Check the SAI version and its tablet API first.
- Verify pressure in the tablet maker’s utility before you troubleshoot SAI.
- Back up files and settings before editing
misc.ini, resetting driver preferences or changing SAI options.
