How to Use Microsoft Copilot in Windows, Microsoft 365, and Edge

Choose the right Copilot experience for Windows, Microsoft 365, or Edge, and learn how account type, licensing, and browser context affect what you can do.

Use the Copilot app in Windows for help with your PC and files, Microsoft 365 Copilot for account- and plan-dependent work in Microsoft apps, and Copilot in Edge to ask about a webpage, PDF, or video. The features you see depend on whether you’re signed in with a personal or work/school account, your subscription or organizational license, and regional availability.

Choose the right Copilot entry point

  • Windows: Open the Copilot app to ask questions about files, visible content, or Windows settings.
  • Microsoft 365: Use Copilot Chat for general questions and web tasks, or access Microsoft 365 features tied to an eligible personal subscription or work/school license.
  • Edge: Open Copilot from the browser toolbar to ask about the page, PDF, or video you’re viewing. You can control whether it uses web context clues.

These are related experiences, not a single feature set. If an option is missing, first check which account is signed in and whether the plan or organization license supports it.

Use Copilot in Windows

Find and open the app

  1. On a new Windows 11 PC, look for Copilot in the Start menu or on the taskbar. Microsoft says the app should already be installed.
  2. If it is missing, get the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store.
  3. Sign in with the account appropriate to the experience you want. Microsoft’s general guide describes a personal Microsoft Account for the personal app experience, while its Windows access guidance also covers Microsoft 365 work/school access. Sign-in requirements can therefore differ.

To launch quickly, use the Copilot key on a supported keyboard or press Windows key+C where available. You can configure the shortcut in Copilot keyboard shortcut settings. A supported pen shortcut can also be mapped to the Copilot key action. Start or the taskbar work too; you do not need a keyboard with a Copilot key.

Ask about files, the screen, or Windows settings

  • Find or read a file: Ask Copilot to help locate or understand a supported file. You can adjust file search and reading under Account > Settings > File Search and File Read. Microsoft lists DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, PDF, and JSON among supported formats.
  • Ask about something on screen: Share a screenshot or start Vision to discuss visible app or screen content. Vision is activated when you start a session; its availability may depend on subscription eligibility.
  • Get to a setting: Ask for directions to the relevant Windows Settings page rather than searching through menus yourself.

Use Copilot with Microsoft 365

“Microsoft 365 Copilot” can refer to several experiences: free Copilot for general chat and web tasks, features in an individual Microsoft 365 subscription, Copilot Chat for work or school, or a paid work Copilot add-on. Their capabilities are not interchangeable, and there is no single feature list that applies to every account.

Personal account

Free Copilot supports general questions, writing, brainstorming, summaries, web-based answers, and Edge page insights. Features inside Microsoft 365 apps depend on the subscription and, for some experiences, whether you are the subscription owner. Check your plan’s current benefits before assuming a particular app feature is included.

Work or school account

Work or school Copilot capabilities depend on your organizational account and licensing. Microsoft says Copilot Chat can use organizational data such as chats, email, and files alongside the web, and can only use work content you are already authorized to access. Organizational settings and licenses affect what is available; ask your administrator if you cannot find a feature.

Use Copilot in Microsoft Edge

Ask about a page, PDF, or video

  1. Sign in to Edge with the appropriate personal account where required.
  2. Open the webpage, PDF, or video you want to discuss.
  3. Select the Copilot icon in the Edge toolbar.
  4. Type a question, choose a suggested prompt, or ask for a summary.

Voice and Vision options may depend on subscription eligibility. What Copilot can draw on also depends on the prompt and your context settings.

Control whether Edge uses web context clues

In Edge, open More (…) > Copilot and AI, then find Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web. Turn it off to prevent responses from using the current webpage, its title, open tabs, or browser history. Edge may explain this context use or ask permission on first use, depending on your region. Microsoft describes open-tab titles and URLs as a basis for suggested prompts; that does not mean every response always reads every tab.

Browse with Copilot is different from chat

Microsoft describes Browse with Copilot as a browser-automation capability: it can click, type, and navigate across pages on your behalf while showing its actions and letting you intervene. That is distinct from asking a question or requesting a summary. Microsoft’s support page describes consumer rollout for Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the US, with additional markets to follow; eligibility and availability can change.

Check answers and understand privacy controls

Microsoft warns: “Sometimes Copilot gets things wrong, so it is important to review what it generates.” Check important claims, summaries, and results against reliable sources before acting on them.

For Vision, Microsoft says session inputs and shared content are not used to train models. Session data may be retained for up to 47 hours to support feedback, then automatically deleted if feedback is not submitted. Review Microsoft’s current guidance before sharing sensitive information, since product and privacy policies can change.
