Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro guidance covers built-in trackpads, and a compatible external trackpad can also provide Multi-Touch gestures. To explore or change them, open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad. The panel demonstrates available gestures and lets you customize or turn off options, though the choices vary by Mac, trackpad, and macOS version.
Find the gestures your Mac supports
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad.
- Review the available sections: Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, and More Gestures.
- Select a gesture or move the pointer over its control to view Apple’s demonstration. Where a menu is provided, choose a different action or turn the gesture off.
The demonstrations are a useful way to confirm both the motion and the action assigned to it before changing a familiar control. Apple notes that available settings depend on the Mac and connected trackpad; your panel may not include every gesture described below. See Apple’s guide to changing Trackpad settings and its Multi-Touch gesture guide.

Common trackpad gestures and what they do
Clicking and looking things up
- Tap to click: Tap with one finger to click if Tap to click is enabled. Otherwise, press the trackpad to click.
- Secondary click: Click or tap with two fingers, depending on the setting and how you click.
- Look up: A three-finger tap can look up a word and show data detectors when that gesture is available and configured.
Scrolling, zooming, and rotating
- Scroll: Slide two fingers up or down. The direction can be adjusted with the Natural scrolling option.
- Zoom: Pinch with two fingers to zoom in or out where the app supports the gesture.
- Smart Zoom: Double-tap with two fingers to zoom in or out in supported content.
- Rotate: Move two fingers around each other to rotate an item in apps that support rotation.
Moving between pages, windows, and spaces
- Page navigation: Swipe with two fingers to move between pages in supported apps.
- Mission Control, App Exposé, and full-screen apps: Swipes with three or four fingers can open these views or move between full-screen apps. Which finger count is used depends on macOS and the configured gesture.
- Show Desktop: Spread your thumb and three fingers apart to reveal the desktop when this gesture is available.
Apple’s gesture guide describes these actions; the Trackpad settings demonstrations show which ones your setup offers.
Change gestures without losing familiar controls
In Trackpad settings, check the current assignment before changing it. If the pane offers a menu for a gesture, choose the action you want; if it offers a checkbox, use it to enable or disable that behavior. Options can include tap to click, secondary click, natural scrolling, zoom, Smart Zoom, rotation, page navigation, full-screen-app navigation, Notification Centre, Mission Control, App Exposé, and Show Desktop. Not every Mac or trackpad presents every option.

Apple’s cited instructions do not describe a general export, backup, or restore feature for gesture preferences. As a practical precaution—not an Apple backup workflow—take a screenshot or write down the settings you use before experimenting. If a gesture no longer behaves as expected, return to System Settings > Trackpad and compare its assignment with your note.
Enable three-finger drag separately
Three-finger drag is not configured in the main Trackpad gesture list. Apple places it in Accessibility settings, and the exact labels differ by macOS version. On supported Force Touch trackpads, use this path:

- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. On some macOS versions, the relevant section is called Mouse & Trackpad.
- Open Trackpad Options.
- Enable trackpad dragging, then choose Three Finger Drag.
If the labels on your Mac differ, consult Apple’s instructions for turning on three-finger drag. The option is for trackpads that support Force Touch.
Use an external trackpad if you want one
The MacBook’s built-in trackpad is enough to use these gestures. If you prefer a larger surface at a desk, Apple also documents connecting a wireless trackpad. It is optional; touchscreen input is not part of the trackpad instructions. Apple’s overview of using a keyboard, mouse, and trackpad with Mac covers input devices.
