Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor smoother PlayStation Portal Remote Play, connect the Portal to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet if possible, and reduce competing network traffic. Sony recommends a 15 Mbps connection for a better experience, but no single setting guarantees smooth play: signal strength, congestion, and the network also matter.
Recommended Wi-Fi settings for PlayStation Portal
Connect the Portal to 5 GHz
Sony recommends using a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the Portal. Select your router’s 5 GHz network in the Portal’s Wi-Fi settings. The benefit depends on the actual signal in the room: distance, walls, interference, and router performance can affect results, so 5 GHz is a recommendation rather than a guarantee that it will outperform every 2.4 GHz setup.

Disable band steering for the Portal if possible
Some routers automatically move devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, a feature often called band steering. Sony recommends disabling it for the Portal if the router allows it. Router brands use different controls and labels, so there is no reliable universal menu path; consult your router’s documentation rather than changing unrelated wireless settings.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use Ethernet for the PS5 when practical
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the internet with a wired connection. Ethernet removes the PS5’s Wi-Fi link from the connection path. If wiring the console is not practical and the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends connecting the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network.

Check speed and reduce network competition
Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting guidance gives 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum connection speed, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. Its Portal guidance also recommends a 15 Mbps connection for a better experience. Treat these as Sony’s guidance, not a promise that meeting the figure alone will prevent interruptions.
When play stutters, pause large downloads and other bandwidth-heavy activity on devices sharing the connection, then test again. If the Portal is wireless, move it closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them. These are useful first changes before considering new network equipment.

Troubleshoot in a practical order
- If the Portal will not connect to Wi-Fi: Check whether another device can join the network. On the Portal, open Settings > Network and review its internet connection setup. If the problem persists, try another network to help determine whether the issue is specific to the home connection.
- If it connects but play is unstable: Pause other devices’ downloads, check upload and download speed, try the 5 GHz network, and reduce distance or obstacles. If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet or connect the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check connection status while playing: On supported installed software, open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. The option is listed on Sony’s current PS Portal software information page; availability can depend on the software version.
- If the Portal cannot reach the PS5: Confirm Remote Play is enabled, both devices use the same PlayStation account, and the PS5 is online. To connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network in the console’s Rest Mode settings.
When router or public-network settings may be involved
Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting page identifies UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. This is not a reason to change router or firewall settings blindly. If basic checks point to a network restriction, ask your internet provider or router support for help.

Public Wi-Fi performance and access rules may be outside your control. Portal support for public networks has changed through software updates, and some public 5 GHz networks may not be supported in all regions. Check the Portal’s current software information and the network’s access requirements before relying on a particular public hotspot.

Do you need different router equipment?
Usually, start with the settings and placement you already have. If you are weighing equipment changes, focus on whether the router provides reliable 5 GHz coverage where you play, whether it lets you control band steering, and whether you can run an Ethernet cable to the PS5. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one possible way to try Sony’s wired-console recommendation, but it is not a requirement for every setup.
Sony’s cited guidance does not establish a universally best Wi-Fi channel, channel width, DNS server, QoS rule, router model, or router menu sequence. Avoid treating any of those as a guaranteed Portal fix.
