How to Use Live Video in Marketing: A Practical Planning Guide

A practical guide to using live video in marketing, from choosing an objective and format to promotion, audience interaction, follow-up, and measurement.

Use live video in marketing as a planned event, not as a shortcut to reach or sales: choose one primary objective, match the format and platform to your audience, promote and rehearse in advance, involve viewers during the broadcast, and follow up with relevant resources and measurement.

Start with one marketing objective

Decide what the event should accomplish before choosing a topic or platform. Possible primary goals include awareness for a launch, thought leadership, audience education, or lead nurturing. The goal should shape the format, whether registration makes sense, the call to action, and the measures you will review afterward.

A single event can contribute to more than one outcome, but competing agendas can weaken it. For example, requiring registration may support lead capture while limiting access to a thought-leadership broadcast. Consider sequencing: use the live event to build awareness or teach, then use its recording and follow-up materials to support later lead nurturing. LinkedIn discusses this trade-off in its event-planning guidance.

Choose a format that suits the audience

For a professional audience on LinkedIn, suitable Live Event formats include product launches, talent branding, presentations, panel discussions, fireside chats, and Q&As. Choose the format that gives viewers a useful reason to attend and gives the host a natural way to meet the objective.

LinkedIn describes Live Events as one-to-many broadcasts and says they may not be the best fit for multi-day events, private events, or large exclusive or ticketed conferences. Those are LinkedIn-specific recommendations, not universal limits on live video elsewhere. Its format and objective guidance can help with LinkedIn planning.

Choose a platform and check access before announcing

Check audience fit, eligibility, registration and discovery options, participation tools, broadcasting-software integration, recording access, analytics, and production workload. The available guidance here describes LinkedIn Live and YouTube analytics, not an apples-to-apples comparison across every platform; verify the destination service’s current help pages before committing to a workflow.

LinkedIn Live is available to qualified Pages and creators. Its workflow connects a third-party broadcast tool to an event through Live Studio. Confirm that your Page or creator account qualifies and that the integration works before promoting a date. See LinkedIn’s Getting Started with Live Events for its workflow.

Plan and promote the broadcast in advance

  1. Set the date and subject two to four weeks ahead. Define the audience benefit and write a run of show so speakers know the sequence and timing. LinkedIn recommends this planning window in its Live Events guidance.
  2. Invite and promote. Invite people in your network and promote the event through organic channels or LinkedIn Event Ads where appropriate. Make the topic, intended audience, and reason to attend clear.
  3. Assign roles. Name a host to guide the program and, where possible, a moderator to track comments and questions while speakers present.
  4. Choose and test the broadcast setup. Select the platform and broadcast tool, rehearse, and test audio and video before the event. LinkedIn says its Live Studio stream-health preview lets producers check stream quality before going live.
  5. Make graphics readable on phones. LinkedIn’s 2026 article reports that 70% of its viewers watch Live Events on mobile devices. That is a LinkedIn-published figure, not a universal audience benchmark; use it as a reason to check slide text and graphics at phone size. See LinkedIn’s B2B live event article.

Set a sensible length and get into the content promptly

For LinkedIn Live, LinkedIn guidance recommends streaming longer than 15 minutes to give an audience time to gather and interact, while ending after one to two hours to limit drop-off. Its content guidelines specify a minimum duration of 15 minutes. These are LinkedIn recommendations and rules, not general rules for all platforms; check the current LinkedIn Live streaming content guidelines before scheduling.

Start with the topic and what viewers will get from it rather than a long holding screen. LinkedIn advises against making viewers wait more than one or two minutes for the event to begin. Prepare an opening that works for people arriving as well as those who joined on time.

Make the live experience participatory

Give viewers a role: ask specific questions, acknowledge useful comments, and invite feedback. A moderator can surface questions for the host and keep discussion moving while speakers focus on the presentation. LinkedIn’s Live Events guidance recommends active interaction and follow-up.

Follow up and reuse the recording thoughtfully

  • Share relevant resources with attendees and continue the conversation with registrants.
  • If your broadcast tool allows you to download the recording, select useful sections for shorter organic posts or ads.
  • Keep edited highlights in context. Do not present an excerpt as though it were unedited live footage.

LinkedIn recommends attendee follow-up and repurposing downloadable recordings in its Live Events guidance.

Measure the outcome against the objective

Choose measures before the event and interpret them in light of your goal, audience size, and the platform. Review what worked and what should change before planning the next broadcast. For YouTube, Studio’s Engagement analytics can show concurrent viewers and chat messages. YouTube defines concurrent viewers as the maximum number watching at one time; the video-level report becomes available within minutes after a stream ends. See YouTube’s live stream data help page. Use the same measures consistently when comparing events in a series.

LinkedIn has published figures from its own data and pilot users, but these are not guarantees or independent evidence that live video causes a particular result. Its 2026 article reports 7 times more reactions and 24 times more comments for LinkedIn Live videos than native videos from the same broadcasters; the comparison used May 1, 2023–June 18, 2024 data from select pilot testers using paid promotion. It also reports 131% higher click-through rates, 19% higher post-event engagement, and 1.5 times greater likelihood of attendees engaging with future company marketing among B2B organizations pairing Live with paid promotion formats, based on a select internal pilot group. LinkedIn further reports an average of 31 times more viewers and 4.4 times more registrations for company-hosted events promoted with Event Ads than for events without promotion; its 2025 internal watch definition was at least 30 seconds. These platform-reported associations are specific to LinkedIn’s datasets and conditions, not forecasts for another campaign. Details appear in LinkedIn’s B2B live event article.

Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
