Recheck just before setting off. A map can help you make a better choice, but a missing alert does not prove the road is clear.
Check the whole route before you leave
- Enter your destination. Review the proposed route at a zoom level that lets you see the full trip, not only the next turn.
- Look for more than a red traffic line. Check for construction or incident markers, lane restrictions, slowdowns, and road-closure indicators. An alert may describe a problem without telling the navigation app to avoid that road.
- Open the alternatives. Compare the displayed arrival time and extra distance, then trace each route to see whether it avoids the work zone or only bypasses part of the queue.
- Check again shortly before departure. Traffic and work status can change between planning and leaving. If a closure matters to your trip, check a current notice from the local road or transportation authority when available.
Do not choose a detour based on distance alone. A shorter-looking route may take longer or use roads that are unsuitable for your vehicle or driving needs.

Understand what an alert does to navigation
Construction or incident report
A construction pin, hazard report, or slowdown alert can warn you about conditions without blocking the road in navigation. Waze says incident reports provide information but do not affect routing; a mapped road closure does. Google announced on July 31, 2024 that Maps was making it easier to report construction, lane closures, objects, and police presence. Google said reports came from the Maps and Waze communities and that users could see which app submitted a report. The announcement covered Android, iOS, cars with Google built-in, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay; availability and behavior can vary as features change and by region. Google’s feature announcement describes the change.

Waze says a road segment marked closed is excluded from routes: “When a closure is added to a road, Waze will not route traffic to it.” Its closure guidance currently covers full roadway closures, not a restriction affecting only some lanes. A lane closure may instead appear as a jam or delay alert. See Waze’s guidance on closures and its explanation of incidents and routing.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
That distinction matters when deciding whether to trust an offered route: an incident marker may be advisory, while a correctly mapped full closure is intended to keep navigation from routing through that segment.
Compare alternate routes, not just their ETAs
- Arrival time and displayed delay: Note the time difference between options, but treat it as an estimate rather than a guaranteed saving.
- Extra distance: Consider whether the added mileage is worth the expected time difference.
- Exposure to the work zone: Follow the route on the map. It may avoid the longest queue but still pass through the affected area.
- Road suitability: Consider vehicle restrictions, unfamiliar local roads, and whether the route is practical for you.
- Alert type and freshness: Check whether the map shows a full closure, lane restriction, or general incident, and whether a current road-authority notice confirms it.
There is no reliable, source-supported figure for how many minutes a live map saves on average, and the available official sources do not establish a universal Google Maps-versus-Waze winner for roadwork accuracy across regions.

Allow for reporting and map-update delays
Map information is not always immediate. Waze says closures submitted through its data feed or Map Editor may take 1–4 minutes to appear; email submissions may take up to two business days. The Waze help page also says missing information can send a closure for editor review, and a closure may reopen when its submitted end time expires, a partner reports an early reopening, or its algorithm detects substantial traffic on the road marked closed. These are Waze’s stated processing details, not a guarantee that every closure is present or current. Waze’s closure guidance explains the timing and reopening conditions.
For partner-feed data, Google says new closure incidents may take about 15–25 minutes to appear in Maps, while updates to existing feed closures may take 1–2 hours. Google also says initial feed processing usually takes several days and can take longer depending on the data and location. These are partner-pipeline estimates, not consumer-facing refresh guarantees. Google Maps Content Partners Help gives the timing details.

When no roadwork alert appears
Absence of a marker is not proof that a road is open or free of construction. Waze describes traffic information based on user reports and other data: it compares current road conditions with historical data for the same time and day of the week, alongside GPS signals and user reports. The official material does not give a consumer-facing accuracy percentage. Waze’s traffic-feed guidance describes those inputs.
For a trip where a closure would cause a serious problem, verify the route with an official local transportation or road-authority notice where one is available. Treat the map as a decision aid, not confirmation that every road is open or that the suggested detour will be faster.
