Smart Fridge vs. Standard Refrigerator: Which Is More Reliable?

Survey evidence raises a question about connected appliances, but it does not prove smart refrigerators are less reliable. Compare the exact model, features, repair support, and software terms.

There is not enough evidence to say that smart refrigerators are inherently less reliable than standard refrigerators. A 2025 JD Power survey found more reported problems among connected appliances overall, but it combined refrigerators with several other appliance types and did not compare otherwise similar smart and non-smart fridges. For a buying decision, the specific model, refrigerator style, ice and water features, repair support, and software policy are more informative than the “smart” label alone.

What the reliability evidence shows

JD Power’s inaugural 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability & Service Study reported 87 problems per 100 connected appliances (PP100), compared with 63 PP100 for appliances without connectivity. The study covered washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and cooking appliances purchased in the prior one to three years. It drew on 12,755 reliability responses and 1,419 appliance-service responses collected in online interviews during June and July 2025. Lower PP100 means fewer reported problems on average. JD Power’s study does not establish that connectivity caused those problems, or that refrigerators alone had the same gap.

Within the connected-appliance group, owners who actively used connectivity reported 92 PP100, while those who did not actively use it reported 80 PP100. These are still pooled appliance figures, not a controlled comparison of smart and standard refrigerators. The evidence reviewed does not provide a direct, like-for-like smart-versus-standard refrigerator failure rate.

JD Power also reports refrigerator results by configuration, not by smart capability. In its 2025 study, GE ranked highest at 52 PP100 for side-by-side refrigerators, 65 PP100 for French-door refrigerators, and 51 PP100 for top-mount freezer refrigerators. These are configuration-specific brand rankings, not proof that any smart model is more reliable than a non-smart one.

Which refrigerator features deserve closer scrutiny?

Consumer Reports’ 2026 member-survey reporting says 49 percent of refrigerators purchased since 2015 had experienced a problem. It also estimated that 31 percent of refrigerators with ice makers would have a problem by the end of the fifth year of ownership. These figures describe refrigerators broadly, not smart refrigerators specifically. Consumer Reports’ refrigerator reliability coverage identifies ice makers and water/ice dispensers as common trouble spots.

An ice maker or dispenser is a mechanical feature, not the same thing as internet connectivity. A fridge can have either feature with or without smart functions, so do not treat these risks as evidence against the smart system itself.

Brand-level guidance also depends on refrigerator style. Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand analysis combines its proprietary lab and survey data, and the coverage varies among French-door, side-by-side, and top-freezer models. It says it lacks enough current test data to score bottom-freezer or built-in brands in that analysis. As Breann Chai, who oversees its refrigerator testing, puts it: “There isn’t one best brand of refrigerator because brands tend to focus on particular segments or styles or prices of the market.” Check ratings for the model or closest model family and configuration rather than relying on one universal brand verdict. Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand analysis explains its approach.

What smart features add—and what they do not

Connected features can include an alert when the door is left open, energy-use reporting, and utility demand-response functions where permitted. ENERGY STAR describes these as possible uses of connected appliances; they are conveniences, not evidence that the refrigerator’s cooling system is more reliable. Connected products can also carry security risks. ENERGY STAR’s connected-products overview describes these functions and considerations.

Software has its own support timeline. Consumer Reports’ 2024 examination of appliance makers’ public policies found that many did not clearly state how long connected products would receive software updates. A refrigerator’s cooling hardware may keep working after app, cloud, security-update, or display support changes. Treat update and service terms as a separate ownership question from the chance of a physical breakdown. Consumer Reports’ software-support review covers the disclosure issue.

How to compare two refrigerators

  1. Start with the exact model and configuration. Look for reliability information on the model or its closest family, and compare like styles where possible. Brand rankings for one configuration should not be assumed to apply to another.
  2. List the features you will actually use. Pay special attention to ice makers and water/ice dispensers because survey reporting identifies them as frequent problem areas. Their presence does not establish that a refrigerator’s connectivity is unreliable.
  3. Check support before buying a connected model. Review the manufacturer’s published app, software-update, and service-support terms. Disclosure of update duration has not been consistent across appliance makers.
  4. Assess repairability for your location and model. Compare warranty coverage, local service access, and likely parts availability. If a fault occurs, base a repair-versus-replacement decision on the diagnosis, warranty terms, and costs rather than assuming every problem has the same remedy. Consumer Reports’ repair-or-replace guide provides general decision guidance.
  5. Compare energy use separately from reliability. ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum efficiency standard. That is an efficiency comparison, not a durability rating; also account for capacity and layout. ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance covers efficiency and selection.
  6. Check actual temperature, not app status alone. ENERGY STAR recommends keeping a refrigerator at 35–38°F. A refrigerator thermometer can help monitor temperature, but it cannot prevent compressor or electronic failures.

When a standard refrigerator may be the better fit

If you would not use door-open alerts, energy reporting, or other connected functions, a standard model avoids making those services part of your ownership decision. That does not guarantee fewer mechanical problems: the available evidence does not establish a direct reliability advantage for standard refrigerators. Choose based on the features, model-specific reliability information, repair support, and warranty that fit your household.
