How to Use iPhone Back Tap to Run Shortcuts and Common Actions

Use Back Tap on iPhone 8 or later to trigger a built-in action or Apple Shortcut with a double- or triple-tap.

On an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 14 or newer, Back Tap lets you trigger an action by double- or triple-tapping the back of the phone. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, choose a gesture, then assign either a built-in action or a shortcut.

Set up Back Tap for a built-in action

  1. On an iPhone 8 or later, update to the latest iOS version available for your device. Apple lists iOS 14 or later as the Back Tap requirement and recommends using the latest available iOS: Apple Support’s Back Tap guide.
  2. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
  3. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  4. Select an action from the list, such as Screenshot, Control Center, or an accessibility action.
  5. Return to the Back Tap screen and configure the other gesture separately if you want a second trigger.
  6. Try the assigned gesture by tapping the back of your iPhone two or three times, according to the option you chose.

Assign a shortcut to a gesture

Create or obtain the shortcut in Apple’s Shortcuts app first. Once it is available on your iPhone, assign it through Back Tap:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
  2. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  3. Scroll to the Shortcuts area and select the shortcut you want to run.
  4. Tap Back Tap to apply the assignment, then use the chosen gesture to run it.

Apple’s Shortcuts User Guide describes this as running a shortcut when you double- or triple-tap the back of your phone. If a shortcut needs content currently onscreen in another app, Apple also points to instructions for receiving onscreen items from other apps.

Choose what each gesture should do

Back Tap supports both built-in actions and shortcuts; it is not limited to launching custom workflows. Pick assignments based on what you do often and which gesture is comfortable to perform.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Assignment Useful for
Screenshot Capturing the current display without opening another control.
Control Center Opening quick system controls.
Accessibility action Invoking an accessibility feature you use frequently.
Shortcut Running a custom workflow on demand.

Double Tap and Triple Tap are configured independently, so you can assign two different triggers. Apple’s accessibility features page says users can “Choose from more than 20 different actions”; that is Apple’s published count, accessed in 2026, not an independently verified count. Available actions can vary with iOS version and configuration: Apple Accessibility features.

If Back Tap is missing or does not work as expected

  • Check the device and software: Apple’s stated eligibility is iPhone 8 or later with iOS 14 or later. Update to the latest iOS available for your iPhone.
  • Check the menu path: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch and look for Back Tap.
  • Confirm the assignment: Open the selected gesture in Back Tap and verify that the intended action or shortcut is chosen.

Apple’s cited guidance does not quantify Back Tap recognition reliability, specify how particular case materials affect it, or promise identical behavior in every app context. If the setting is present but a gesture does not produce the expected result, the available guidance does not establish a specific cause.
