If your iPhone says “Preparing Update” or “Installing,” Apple does not specify a universal timeout for those Settings messages. Don’t assume it has failed after a set number of minutes. If you see the Apple logo and progress bar, keep the iPhone connected to power and give the process time: the bar can move slowly, appear static, or start again. Use the screen you see to choose the next step below.
First, identify what the iPhone is showing

If pressing a button brings up an “updating” message, Apple says the update is still in progress. Keep it connected to power while it works. Apple Support

If the update is still in Settings or shows an error
Check compatibility, internet, and storage
Apple lists three requirements for an update: a compatible iPhone, an internet connection, and enough available storage. Confirm your model supports the iOS version offered, check that internet access works, and review available space. Apple’s iPhone update troubleshooting guide

Retry network or verification errors in order
- Retry the update on the same network.
- If the alert returns, try another network.
- If it still fails, update with a Mac or PC using the appropriate Apple software.
- If the issue persists after trying multiple networks, remove the downloaded update from iPhone Storage and download it again, as described below.

Delete and download the update again if installation failed
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and select the iOS update, if it appears, then tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, or downloading it again does not solve the problem, Apple directs you to update with a Mac or iTunes. Keep the iPhone connected to power during a wireless installation. Apple’s update instructions

If the iPhone is unresponsive
Force restart only when the device is unresponsive. The button sequence depends on the model:

Apple’s model-specific restart instructions
If the Apple-logo progress bar has not moved for an hour
Apple’s one-hour threshold is for a specific situation: restoring from a backup or transferring data to an iPhone running iOS 13 or later. It is not a general timer for an ordinary wireless update or the Settings “Preparing” status. If you are in that restore or migration scenario and have confirmed the bar has not moved for at least one hour, use a computer and recovery mode. Apple’s Apple-logo troubleshooting steps

- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC.
- Open Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later; iTunes on macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier; or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on a PC.
- Enter recovery mode using the button sequence for your iPhone model.
- When prompted, choose Update first. This attempts to reinstall iOS without choosing the data-erasing Restore option.
Restore erases the iPhone. Apple’s warning is explicit: “If you choose Restore, it will erase your iPhone.” Do not select Restore unless you understand that consequence and are prepared for the data loss. Apple Support
