You can reduce what Meta AI can use by sharing less in prompts, clearing its conversation history where the current app supports it, and reviewing your broader Meta account privacy controls. These steps have different effects: Meta’s reviewed materials do not establish one universal switch that disables all Meta AI processing across every app or prevents every use of information.
Meta AI is integrated into several Meta services, and the controls available can depend on the app and your region. Check the current app’s settings and Help pages before relying on a particular menu or command.

1. Share less sensitive information in prompts
The most direct way to limit what you disclose to Meta AI is not to enter information you would not want to provide to the service. Avoid including passwords, financial account details, government identification numbers, medical records, confidential work material, or another person’s private information unless you have assessed the service’s terms and have a clear reason to share it.

Be mindful of uploads as well as typed prompts: a photo, document, or screenshot may contain names, addresses, account details, or other information beyond what you intended to ask about. Limiting prompt content is prudent disclosure practice; it is not a control over Meta’s broader data collection or use.

2. Clear the AI’s conversation history
Meta’s generative-AI system card, last updated September 27, 2023, says recent conversation history may inform how an AI interprets a later prompt. It documents commands for deleting an AI’s copy of chat history:
/reset-ai— the system card says this deletes a single AI’s copy of your chat history./reset-all-ais— the system card says this deletes the AIs’ copies of your chat history across all AIs.
These commands and descriptions come from a 2023 system card, not a verified current walkthrough for every Meta AI surface. Check the current app’s Help or settings to see whether these commands are supported and what history controls are available to you. Deleting a visible chat thread from an inbox may not be equivalent to resetting the AI’s stored copy; the reviewed materials do not establish that they are the same action.

3. Use account privacy tools for their specific purposes
Meta lists several privacy and information controls. They can help manage account data, advertising preferences, and activity information, but they should not be treated as interchangeable with an AI chat reset or as a blanket AI-training opt-out.
- Privacy Checkup and Accounts Center: Review the account and privacy settings Meta makes available for your connected services.
- Access, download, manage, or delete personal data: Use Meta’s data tools to review or manage information associated with your account. Meta describes these as personal-data controls; the reviewed material does not say they erase every internal record or undo prior model training.
- Ad preferences: Review controls concerning ad personalization. These are advertising controls, not evidence of a universal control over AI training.
- Off-Meta activity: Meta provides controls for information businesses send about activity on other apps and websites. This addresses that activity information and should not be presented as a control over every source used by Meta AI.

What does deleting a Meta AI chat actually do?
Meta’s system card distinguishes deleting an AI’s copy of chat history from changing a model. It says deleting a piece of information does not change a model at that moment, while also stating that deleted information will not be used for future training. That statement is specific to the system-card context; it does not establish that every current Meta product follows an identical process, that every account record is removed, or that removal happens on a particular timetable.
The same document says public, licensed, and Meta product or service information may be used to train generative AI systems. It says public or licensed personal information is not specifically linked to a Meta account in that context. This description does not resolve every current objection or opt-out procedure, which may differ by product and location. Can you turn Meta AI off completely?
Meta’s Facebook explainer, dated June 5, 2026, says Meta AI can be muted or adjusted using account settings and Facebook privacy tools. It does not document a universal disable switch for every Meta AI feature across Meta’s apps. Muting or adjusting a particular surface should therefore not be assumed to stop all AI processing or remove the assistant from every product. The reviewed Meta materials do not settle current AI-training objection procedures in every country, nor do they establish a fixed timeline for removing a deleted chat from all internal systems. For a practical first pass, limit sensitive prompt content, use the current AI-history control if available, and then review account controls according to their stated purpose.
