Firefox is the clearest desktop alternative if you want an explicit way to block browser-integrated AI: Firefox 148 adds an AI Controls section with a switch to block current and future AI-enhanced features, or controls for individual features. Brave is another option to consider, but its resource advantage is based here on a benchmark published by Brave for macOS—not an independent, universal ranking. If your main concern is memory or battery use rather than leaving Chrome, try Chrome’s built-in performance settings first.
Which browser should you choose?
| Your priority | Best fit from the documented options | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Block browser-integrated AI with an explicit desktop control | Firefox 148 or later | Its desktop AI Controls can block current and future AI-enhanced features or manage listed features individually. Mozilla explains the controls. |
| Consider a browser with built-in blocking and vendor-published resource results | Brave | Brave published a macOS comparison of its browser with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. The results describe that test, not performance every user should expect. Its Leo icon can be hidden, but hiding it is not the same as completely disabling relevant feature code. Brave’s benchmark and Brave’s feature guidance explain those limits. |
| Reduce memory or battery impact without switching | Chrome’s Memory Saver or Energy Saver | These settings target resource use; they do not remove Chrome or its ecosystem. See Google’s Chrome performance guidance. |
No option here is established as the lightest browser on every device and workload. Browser resource use changes with operating system, version, open tabs, extensions, and what those tabs are doing. Also, a browser’s AI controls govern browser-integrated features; they do not necessarily remove AI provided by a search engine or a website.

How Firefox’s desktop AI controls work
Mozilla says the AI Controls section arrived with Firefox 148 on desktop, rolling out February 24, 2026. You can use its single control to block current and future AI-enhanced features, or choose which listed features to allow or block. Mozilla says those preferences persist across updates. The documented controls are for desktop; the cited material does not establish equivalent controls on Firefox mobile. Mozilla’s announcement describes the release.

Features covered by the listed controls
- Translations
- AI-generated alt text for images in PDFs
- AI tab grouping
- Link previews
- The sidebar chatbot
The sidebar can offer third-party chatbot choices. That is distinct from the other browser features in the list: choosing not to use the sidebar chatbot does not by itself block all AI-enhanced features. Use the overall blocking control if your goal is to block the browser features covered by Firefox’s AI Controls.

What Brave’s resource figures do—and do not—show
Brave’s September 2, 2026 desktop comparison tested Brave, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on macOS. The values below are averages reported by Brave for its own test, not results from an independent lab or a guarantee for another computer. Read Brave’s methodology and results before treating the figures as relevant to your workload.
| Browser | Mean memory use | Mean CPU utilization | Average energy per page load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brave | Approximately 1,200 MB | Approximately 33% | Approximately 31.1 mWh |
| Chrome | Approximately 1,750 MB | Approximately 47% | Approximately 32.5 mWh |
| Edge | Approximately 1,620 MB | Approximately 53% | Approximately 35.3 mWh |
| Firefox | Approximately 1,650 MB | Approximately 78% | Approximately 36.1 mWh |
These numbers do not establish that Brave will use less memory or energy on your machine. The cited comparison is one vendor’s macOS test, and it does not establish a ranking across operating systems, versions, sites, or personal workloads. For a useful personal comparison, try the same sites and typical tab count in each browser on your own device.
Brave separately said its v1.85 update reduced memory use by its ad-block engine by 75%, estimating roughly 45 MB saved by default across desktop and mobile. That is an estimate for the blocker engine, not a 75% reduction in whole-browser memory use. Brave’s update note gives the claim and its scope.

Brave’s documentation distinguishes hiding the Leo icon from fully disabling feature code. Hiding the icon changes its visibility; it should not be treated as complete removal. Brave says completely disabling some feature code generally requires desktop Group Policy. That route is unavailable on Android and iOS, so the cited documentation does not establish a general mobile method for completely removing it. Check Brave’s current feature instructions for the controls and platform details that apply to your version.
How to reduce Chrome’s resource use without switching
If the issue is memory or battery impact rather than Google integration, Chrome’s own desktop performance options may be a lower-friction first step. Google documents Memory Saver and Energy Saver for desktop; Energy Saver’s controls apply to devices with batteries, not Chrome mobile performance controls. Google’s instructions cover the settings.

Memory Saver
Memory Saver deactivates tabs that are not in use; a deactivated tab reloads when you return to it. Chrome offers Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum levels. Some activity can keep a tab active, including audio or video, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, and partially completed forms. Consider the strongest setting only if you are comfortable with inactive pages reloading when revisited.
Energy Saver
Energy Saver reduces image capture rate and other background tasks when the computer is unplugged or its battery is low. Google warns that users may notice changes in gaming and video performance. If smooth playback or gaming matters more than battery conservation, account for that trade-off when choosing whether to use it.
Does switching brands guarantee a browser without AI?
No. The controls documented here differ in scope, and a product’s AI features can change with releases. For example, Opera’s October 3, 2025 announcement described Aria as available in several Opera desktop and mobile products and announced expanded AI capabilities. That announcement does not establish the current settings or feature set of every Opera product, so check the version and controls of the specific browser before switching. Opera’s announcement describes what it said at that time.
For any candidate, distinguish three things: whether browser-integrated AI is available, whether it can be blocked or only hidden, and whether a website or search service supplies AI independently of the browser. If complete removal matters, confirm the applicable controls on your platform rather than assuming that a different brand name means AI is absent.
How to choose and test an alternative
- Decide what you are trying to avoid. If it is browser-integrated AI, look for a documented block control. If it is high memory use or battery drain, focus on performance settings and a comparison that matches your device.
- Check platform and version support. Firefox’s cited AI Controls apply to desktop Firefox 148 and later; Brave’s documented Group Policy route for complete feature-code disabling is desktop-only.
- Test your everyday workload. Open the same sites, with your usual extensions and tab count, in each browser. Notice memory use, responsiveness, media behavior, and how inactive tabs behave.
- Check switching friction before committing. Verify that your passwords, bookmarks, sync needs, extensions, and site-specific workflows work as you expect. The available comparisons do not establish that these features behave identically across browsers.
Switching is reversible: you can keep the old browser available while testing the alternative and move fully only after confirming your routine works. Where resource use is the concern, compare the results under the same conditions rather than relying on a vendor’s figures as a prediction for your device.
