Automatic iOS Updates: What to Enable and When to Install Them

Enable Automatically Install for overnight iPhone updates, or use Automatically Download if you want to choose when installation happens. Learn where to find the settings and which security controls are separate.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For hands-off iPhone updates, turn on Automatically Install at Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple says installation happens overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and that it notifies you before installing. If you want to choose the installation time yourself, turn off that option and use Automatically Download instead.

How to turn on automatic iOS updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
  3. Choose Automatically Install for overnight download and installation. To download updates but install them yourself, turn off Automatically Install and enable Automatically Download. Apple’s current iOS 26 instructions describe these choices at Update iOS on iPhone and in the iPhone User Guide.

Apple describes automatic installation as an overnight process while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi; it does not promise an exact clock time. The current instructions give Automatically Download similar general conditions, but leave installation for you to initiate. Labels and available options may vary by iOS version, so use the Software Update screen on your iPhone if its interface differs.

Should you install automatically or download first?

Choice What happens Best fit
Automatically Install iPhone downloads and installs overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi; Apple says it notifies you before installation. You want routine updates handled with minimal effort and can leave the phone charging on Wi-Fi overnight.
Automatically Download The update downloads, but you choose when to install it. You want to review the version and update details, or select a convenient time when you can be without the phone.
Manual check At Settings > General > Software Update, review the installed version and whether an update is available. You prefer to check for updates yourself. Apple also documents updating through a connected Mac or Windows computer when appropriate.

Apple’s cited guidance does not set a universal waiting period after an update is released. Automatic installation is the lower-effort choice; downloading without installing gives you more control over timing. If Apple identifies a security update as important, the available guidance does not support recommending an arbitrary delay.

Other update controls to consider

System Files

System Files is a separate automatic control for updates that can improve iPhone features without changing the iOS version. In Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates, you can turn off Automatically Install for iOS Updates and enable Automatically Install for System Files. This lets System Files install automatically without enabling automatic installation of full iOS updates. See Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Background Security Improvements

Apple’s iOS 26 guide documents these as a separate control for additional protection between software updates. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and turn on Automatically Install. Apple says that, in rare cases involving compatibility issues, an improvement may be temporarily removed and included in a future software update. Enabling automatic iOS installation does not necessarily enable either System Files or Background Security Improvements; configure each control separately. See Apple’s About Background Security Improvements.

Back up and review the update before installation

Apple advises backing up your iPhone before updating. Its iPhone user guide says, “When you update to the latest version of iOS, your data and settings remain unchanged.” Treat that as guidance about the expected update, not a guarantee against every possible problem; keeping a backup gives you a recovery option. On the Software Update screen, review the version number and update details before installing. Apple’s instructions are in Update iOS on iPhone and the iPhone User Guide.

If automatic updates are unavailable on a work iPhone

An organization can manage update behavior on supervised Apple devices, defer updates, or require a specific update by a deadline. If an iPhone is managed for work or school, its settings may therefore differ from a personal device. Contact the organization’s administrator if an update control is unavailable or a deadline appears. Apple documents these options in its software update management guidance.
