You can use HLS source material in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, but you cannot upload a static HLS playlist file to YouTube and expect it to play live. You need an HLS-capable encoder or playout system to send a rolling playlist of media segments to the HLS ingest URL YouTube provides. YouTube’s ingest requirements include TS segments, HTTPS delivery, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, M2TS muxing, and a closed GOP.
What “HLS playlist” means in YouTube Live
HLS, or HTTP Live Streaming, packages video as media segments referenced by a playlist that is updated as the stream continues. In YouTube Live ingest, an encoder sends those segments and playlist updates to a YouTube-provided endpoint. This is different from uploading a static .m3u8 file or adding an HLS URL to a viewer-facing YouTube playlist.

If your source is already HLS, route it through a compatible encoder or playout workflow that can produce the rolling HLS output YouTube requires. YouTube’s documentation does not define one universal static-file-to-live procedure or certify arbitrary third-party playlists, so confirm that your chosen encoder supports YouTube HLS output and test the entire path before scheduling an important broadcast.
How to set up HLS ingest in YouTube Live
- Create the live stream and key. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select a stream, and create a stream key. Choose HLS as the stream protocol. Copy the HTTPS stream URL and enter it, along with the key where required, in an encoder that supports YouTube HLS. YouTube documents the HLS setup in its HLS setup guide.
- Choose the video mode. Configure the encoder for the intended 4K/2160p, 60 fps source and an HLS-compatible codec. If you intend to stream HDR, YouTube says to leave manual resolution unchecked. Check the encoder’s own guidance for where to set resolution and frame rate; controls vary by software.
- Set the required media format. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide specifies video in H.264 or HEVC, single-track AAC audio, muxed in M2TS, with a closed GOP. The setup guide also calls for TS media segments. Keep the distinction clear: TS describes the required segment format, while M2TS is the documented muxing requirement. See Google’s YouTube Live HLS ingestion guide.
- Configure a rolling segment playlist. The encoder must send a live, rolling playlist rather than a fixed playlist of completed files. YouTube recommends HLS media segments of 1–4 seconds and says segments must not exceed 5 seconds. The playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use the supported delivery method. Send segment and playlist requests over HTTPS using POST or PUT. Byte-range delivery is unsupported, and YouTube requires HTTPS-only encryption.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before publishing publicly. Use a representative section of the source, including its loudest audio and fastest motion, so problems appear before the real broadcast.
YouTube Live HLS 4K 60fps bitrate
YouTube’s current settings table, accessed October 3, 2026, gives different 4K/2160p at 60 fps bitrate figures by codec. The minimum is not the target for a stable stream: use the recommended rate where your encoder and sustained upload capacity can support it. These figures are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will deliver reliably. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

| Codec at 4K/2160p, 60 fps | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
Match the encoder bitrate to the codec and source. Your upload must sustain the outgoing stream continuously, with practical headroom for network variation; a speed test is only a snapshot and does not establish sustained performance during a broadcast. YouTube supports up to 60 fps for this HLS ingest path.
HLS versus RTMP for a 4K live stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS for general live streaming and lists HLS as an option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. Encoder compatibility matters: choose the protocol that both the intended workflow and YouTube support. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream, and the ultra-low-latency option is unavailable for HLS. The encoder settings guidance classifies 4K/2160p as normal latency, so HLS is not the right choice when near-real-time audience interaction is the priority. Protocol and latency guidance is in YouTube’s HLS setup information and encoder settings guide.

Test the whole workflow before going public
- Verify the stream key and HTTPS ingest URL are entered in the correct fields.
- Confirm the encoder is sending a rolling playlist and TS segments, not merely exposing a static HLS file.
- Check the output codec, single AAC audio track, M2TS muxing, closed GOP, and segment duration.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the resulting preview for dropped frames, buffering, missing audio, or unexpected quality changes.
- Use the actual intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and a representative source segment during the test.
YouTube automatically transcodes live input into formats for viewers, so the viewer’s playback options may differ from the encoder’s input. YouTube also says it automatically detects the encoder settings chosen; that does not remove the need to check health and preview output. See the encoder settings guide.

Common HLS ingest problems and fixes
- YouTube does not recognize the incoming stream: Check that HLS is selected for the stream, that the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS workflow, and that you copied the correct HTTPS ingest URL and key.
- The source plays locally but does not work as a live input: A static playlist is not itself a live YouTube feed. Use a playout or encoder workflow that continuously generates and sends the rolling playlist and segments.
- Segments are rejected or the stream stalls: Confirm TS segments, M2TS muxing, HTTPS POST or PUT, no byte-range requests, and no more than five outstanding segments. Keep segments within the documented limit of 5 seconds.
- Video or audio is missing: Check for H.264 or HEVC video and one AAC audio track, then verify that the encoder is muxing both correctly into the outgoing stream.
- Playback buffers or quality degrades: Check sustained upload capacity against the codec-specific bitrate, inspect encoder and network load, and test at a lower supported bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the intended rate.
- There is more delay than expected: HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP and cannot use YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option. For 4K/2160p, YouTube specifies normal latency.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Using HLS does not change YouTube’s content rules. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material in the source. A live presentation of prerecorded or repeated material should also offer sufficient original value and comply with YouTube’s monetization policies if you plan to monetize it. Review the applicable rules in YouTube’s Community Guidelines and YouTube channel monetization policies.
