A 60 fps loop is within YouTube’s published limit of up to 60 fps for RTMP/RTMPS live streams, but the encoder must actually send a frame rate permitted by the stream configuration. Check the exact Live Control Room warning before changing settings: a frame-rate warning and a keyframe-interval warning require different fixes. For a 60 fps stream, set keyframes every 2 seconds (120 frames), use constant bitrate, and choose a bitrate for the incoming resolution and codec.
What the frame-rate warning means
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists frame rates up to 60 fps. That general ceiling does not guarantee that every stream configuration accepts 60 fps: use the limit shown in the specific Live Control Room warning and selected stream settings. A file labeled 60 fps or a project set to 60 fps does not prove that the encoder is sending 60 fps.

YouTube reports excessive frame rate separately from incorrect keyframe frequency and other video errors. Read the literal health message rather than treating every stream-health warning as a frame-rate problem. The exact warning, encoder, selected settings, resolution, codec, and measured upload capacity determine the diagnosis; without them, it is not possible to identify one specific cause. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet frame rate and keyframes for a 60 fps stream
- Read the warning and stream configuration. In Live Control Room, note the exact health message and the selected stream settings. If YouTube tells you to use a lower frame-rate limit, follow that limit rather than assuming 60 fps is accepted for this stream.
- Check the encoder’s actual output. Confirm the outgoing frame rate in the encoder, not just the loop file’s nominal frame rate or the project setting. Match the output to the limit in the selected stream configuration.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames. At 30 fps, it is 60 frames—the example on YouTube’s error page applies to 30 fps, not 60 fps. Keep the interval at four seconds or less.
- Use a closed GOP if the encoder exposes that option. YouTube says a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies CBR. For other relevant encoder settings, it recommends progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
Frame rate and keyframe frequency are different settings, even though YouTube says they are linked. When changing frame rate, keep the keyframe interval at two seconds; the corresponding frame count changes with the frame rate. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default for custom stream keys. Its encoder guidance also recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream settings management.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Choose the bitrate for your resolution and codec
Bitrate depends on the incoming resolution, frame rate, and codec—not on the loop being 60 fps alone. These are YouTube’s recommended live bitrates, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain them:
| Incoming resolution and rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use the row matching the encoder’s actual incoming resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live video. Run a speed test and choose a bitrate your connection can carry reliably; the recommended target is not a substitute for adequate, stable upload capacity.

Test before going live and monitor stream health
Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast so the check reflects the real stream rather than a static or silent sample. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. If a new warning appears, use its wording to identify the relevant setting instead of changing frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate all at once.
Troubleshoot a warning in order
- Excessive frame rate: Compare the encoder’s actual output with the limit shown for the selected stream. Apply a lower limit if the warning specifies one.
- Incorrect keyframe frequency: Set a two-second interval—120 frames at 60 fps—and do not exceed four seconds. Enable a closed GOP if available.
- Buffering or unstable health: Check that bitrate matches the incoming resolution and codec, then assess whether the upload connection can sustain it. YouTube warns that keyframes sent less often than recommended may cause buffering.
- Warning persists after a change: Read the updated message and check the encoder’s actual output again. A loop’s nominal frame rate alone does not establish what is being sent.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is part of keeping a pre-recorded YouTube loop running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video, not a camera feed. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
