For a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube RTMP/RTMPS stream, configure a two-second keyframe interval (YouTube says not to exceed four seconds), then choose the playback latency mode in YouTube Live Control Room. Use low latency for faster viewing with some buffering risk, ultra-low latency only when interaction matters more than buffering, and normal latency if you need 4K. Those settings do not guarantee a particular end-to-end delay or an uninterrupted 24-hour session; plan resilience and recording separately.
First separate encoder latency from viewer latency
“Latency” can mean delay introduced while MediaLive encodes and sends the feed, or the delay viewers experience during playback. MediaLive controls the contribution and output side; YouTube’s selected latency mode and each viewer’s playback conditions also affect the final delay. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and that event appearing on the stream.

For the direct RTMP/RTMPS workflow, use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as the compatibility target, then select the playback mode on the YouTube event. Do not use AWS’s one-second HLS-segment recommendation as an RTMP setting: that advice applies to AWS’s low-latency HLS workflow with MediaPackage v2.

| Mode | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | 4K, maximum compatibility, or a program where interaction is not time-critical | More viewer delay than the low-latency modes; YouTube describes this mode as supporting all resolutions and live features. |
| Low latency | Viewers benefit from faster updates, but minute-by-minute interaction is not essential | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds. Buffering risk is higher than with normal latency, and 4K is unavailable. |
| Ultra-low latency | Chat, call-ins, or other highly interactive programming where near-real-time response matters | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than five seconds. It can increase buffering, and 4K is unavailable. |
The figures are YouTube’s typical descriptions, not guarantees. Actual delay and buffering depend on the complete path and viewer conditions. If the channel must be 4K, select normal latency rather than low or ultra-low latency.

Set MediaLive output for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS
- Use a YouTube-compatible contribution format. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. H.264 video with AAC audio is the conservative choice for broad compatibility. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Set the keyframe cadence to two seconds. Configure the MediaLive output GOP/keyframe interval so keyframes are two seconds apart; do not exceed four seconds. The frame count depends on output frame rate: at 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. Use the MediaLive setting’s units and verify the resulting cadence rather than assuming a frame count applies to every frame rate.
- Use constant bitrate and select the matching YouTube bitrate guidance. YouTube recommends CBR and publishes target ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; at 1080p60, it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not MediaLive service limits. Match the row to the actual output, and ensure the source and network can sustain it.
- Match the output to the event’s playback choice. Confirm resolution, frame rate, codec, audio format, and bitrate in the MediaLive output and YouTube event. If using low or ultra-low latency, do not configure 4K; YouTube does not offer 4K with those modes.
- Keep the stream key and destination aligned. Use the ingest server and stream key shown for the intended YouTube event in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret, and verify that the MediaLive destination and YouTube event refer to the same stream before starting.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance should be checked when setting up a new event because its supported options and recommended bitrate rows can change. The specific bitrate examples above are the values stated in the cited YouTube guidance; they are not AWS limits.
How direct RTMP differs from AWS low-latency HLS
AWS’s recommendation of one-second segments is for a MediaLive-to-MediaPackage v2 low-latency HLS workflow. It is not a universal setting for MediaLive sending RTMP directly to YouTube. Within that HLS workflow, AWS identifies segment length, GOP size, retries, cache duration, and restart settings as latency factors, and recommends one-second segments, a retry interval equal to segment length, and a lower file-cache duration.

YouTube says HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream, resulting in higher latency, and that HLS does not offer the ultra-low-latency option. Use HLS only when its codec or feature requirements suit the workflow, and follow the requirements for that ingest path instead of transferring the RTMP keyframe advice or AWS’s HLS segment value across protocols.
Plan a 24-hour run for continuity and recording
Build and rehearse a recovery plan
A 24-hour channel needs more than a latency setting. AWS documents two identical MediaLive pipelines as a resiliency option and schedule actions for switching inputs. Decide which inputs and pipelines are available, what should happen on input loss, and how the event will be switched or recovered. Rehearse those actions before leaving the stream unattended; the documentation does not establish uninterrupted operation for a particular configuration.

Monitor the stream and test failures
YouTube recommends testing and previewing the encoder feed and monitoring stream health. Before the run, confirm that YouTube receives the expected video and audio, the selected latency mode is active, and the stream remains healthy at the planned resolution and bitrate. Test the failure and failover behavior you intend to rely on. Actual end-to-end latency and 24-hour reliability must be verified under the intended output and network conditions.
Keep an independent recording
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise an archive for one 24-hour event. If the complete program must be available afterward, arrange a separate local or cloud recording and verify current YouTube behavior rather than relying on an automatic VOD archive. The cited archive guidance is not a statement that YouTube terminates a stream at 12 hours.

Common problems and fixes
- Viewers report more delay than expected: Check whether the YouTube event is set to the intended latency mode, confirm keyframes are two seconds apart, and test from actual viewer connections. A mode’s typical latency description is not a guaranteed end-to-end measurement.
- Playback buffers after selecting ultra-low latency: YouTube warns that ultra-low latency may increase buffering. If stable playback matters more than rapid interaction, test low latency or normal latency instead.
- The 4K option is unavailable: Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K. Use normal latency if 4K is required.
- The stream does not start or YouTube does not receive it: Check that the event’s ingest server and stream key match the MediaLive destination, then preview the incoming feed and inspect YouTube stream health.
- Video or audio is rejected or incompatible: Verify that the selected ingest protocol, codec, audio format, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate match YouTube’s current encoder guidance. H.264 with AAC is the conservative RTMP/RTMPS combination.
- The 24-hour event ends without a complete VOD: The automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed archive of a 24-hour event. Preserve the independent recording and check the current YouTube archive behavior.
- A keyframe change does not improve the result: Confirm the actual output GOP cadence and consider playback mode, network conditions, and viewer-side buffering; keyframe interval is only one part of end-to-end latency.
