How to Use Hermes Agent With Ollama: Local Setup, Models, Tools, and Troubleshooting

A practical guide to running Hermes Agent with Ollama: use the launcher or manual OpenAI-compatible endpoint, select a tool-capable model, configure 64K context, test real actions, and troubleshoot latency, timeouts, and privacy.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to run Hermes Agent with Ollama is ollama launch hermes. Ollama can install Hermes when necessary, let you choose a local or cloud model, configure the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and optionally prepare messaging gateways. For manual control, run Ollama yourself, pull a tool-capable model, verify its API, then select Custom Endpoint in hermes setup and use http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1.

What Hermes Agent and Ollama each do

Hermes Agent is an agent runtime from Nous Research. It supplies the behavior around a language model: tool execution, automatic skill creation, cross-session memory, and more than 70 bundled skills. Ollama is the local model server. It downloads and runs the model, then exposes an OpenAI-compatible API that Hermes can call.

This division matters when something fails. A model can answer ordinary questions while still being unsuitable for an agent. File editing, terminal commands, and browser work require structured tool calls. Hermes can provide the tools, but Ollama’s selected model must know how to request them in the format Hermes expects.

Think of the connection as three layers. Hermes assembles the prompt, tool definitions, conversation history, and execution loop. Ollama accepts that request at its local HTTP service and routes it to the selected model. The model decides whether to return text or a structured request for a tool. A defect in any one layer can look like a generic “Hermes failed” message, so testing each layer separately saves time.

Choose the setup path

Fastest path: the Ollama launcher

Use this when you want the fewest configuration decisions:

ollama launch hermes

The launcher can install Hermes if it is not already present, offer a local or cloud model, configure Hermes to use Ollama, and offer messaging-gateway setup. Complete the prompts, then start a tool-using test rather than stopping after a greeting. The launcher is convenient for a first installation, but it does not remove the need to check model capability, context size, or privacy settings.

During an interactive launch, record the model name that was selected. You will need that exact name when diagnosing requests, changing the context configuration, or recreating the setup on another machine. If the launcher offers a cloud option, remember that choosing it changes the data path and is no longer equivalent to local-only inference.

Manual path: maximum control

Use manual setup when you need to choose the exact model, set a large context window, diagnose an endpoint, or keep gateways disabled. The endpoint Hermes should call is Ollama’s OpenAI-compatible base URL:

http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1

Local Ollama does not require an API key. If the setup screen refuses an empty value, enter a harmless placeholder such as no-key; it is not a credential for the local server. Do not paste a real cloud-provider key into a local-only configuration unless you intentionally plan to use a hosted fallback.

The two loopback spellings, 127.0.0.1 and localhost, normally reach the same machine. Use one consistently, and include the trailing /v1. The native Ollama management endpoint, such as /api/tags, is useful for health checks but is not the OpenAI-compatible base URL Hermes expects.

Requirements before you begin

Resource or capability Guidance What it affects
Operating system Install Ollama with the installer for your platform. On supported Unix-like systems, the documented command is curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh. Whether the Ollama service and command-line client are available.
Memory At least 8 GB RAM for 3B models; 32 GB or more is recommended for 27B-and-larger models. Which models can load and how much swapping or slowdown occurs.
Storage At least 5 GB free; 30 GB or more is recommended when keeping multiple models. Model downloads, duplicated model variants, and custom context configurations.
GPU An NVIDIA GPU with at least 8 GB of VRAM is recommended for faster inference. Generation speed and how much work can be offloaded from the CPU.
Context capacity Hermes agentic work currently requires at least 64,000 tokens of context. How much conversation, tool output, and file content can remain available.

These are capacity guidelines, not promises that every model will fit. Quantization, operating-system overhead, concurrent applications, and the size of the context all consume memory in addition to the model’s nominal size. Leave headroom rather than planning to use every available byte.

CPU-only operation works, but it is slower. The current Nous Research guide gives illustrative figures of about 10 tokens per second for a 9B model on a modern eight-core CPU and about 2–5 tokens per second for a 31B model on CPU. These are guide examples, not guaranteed results: actual speed depends on CPU, quantization, RAM bandwidth, context length, operating system, and concurrent workloads. A slow first response can also include model-loading time; subsequent responses may be faster if the model remains resident.

Install and verify Ollama manually

1. Install the server

Install Ollama using the platform-appropriate package or installer. On a supported Unix-like system, the documented one-line installer is:

curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh

On desktop platforms, launch the installed Ollama application if it is not already running. Hermes cannot connect until the Ollama service is listening on its local port. If you use a service manager, ensure the service starts under the same user or has access to the model directory.

2. Check the client and server

Confirm that the command-line client exists:

ollama --version

Then ask the local server for its model list:

curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags

A successful response is JSON containing the models currently installed. An empty model list is acceptable at this stage; a connection refusal means Ollama is not running or the service is bound somewhere else. Fix that before editing Hermes settings. If the command works in one terminal but not from a container or remote shell, check which machine owns localhost; loopback refers to the process’s own host.

3. Download a model

Pull a model that supports structured tool calls. The official example is:

ollama pull gemma4:31b

Large models can take substantial time and storage. Keep the terminal open until the pull completes, then repeat curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags and confirm the model appears. Copy the exact tag, including punctuation and the size suffix, because Hermes sends that identifier in each request.

4. Test the OpenAI-compatible chat endpoint

Testing the endpoint independently separates Ollama problems from Hermes configuration problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl http://localhost:11434/v1/chat/completions
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{"model":"gemma4:31b","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Reply with OK"}]}'

The response should be JSON containing an assistant message. This confirms that Ollama can accept the OpenAI-style request Hermes will send. It does not yet prove that the model can issue tools; that requires the action test described below. If the endpoint returns a model-not-found error, compare the request’s model string with the output of /api/tags instead of downloading a second, nearly identical model.

Connect Hermes to Ollama

  1. Run hermes setup.
  2. Select Custom Endpoint when asked for the provider.
  3. Set the base URL to http://localhost:11434/v1 (the loopback address http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1 is also used by the official integration).
  4. Leave the API-key field empty, or enter no-key if the interface requires text.
  5. Choose the exact model name you pulled, such as gemma4:31b.
  6. Save the configuration and start Hermes with:
hermes

Run a task that needs an actual tool before considering the setup complete. A simple conversation only demonstrates text generation; it does not verify file, shell, or browser integration. Start with a disposable directory and harmless instructions so that an incorrect tool call cannot overwrite an important project.

Verify structured tool use

A practical smoke test

Ask Hermes to perform a harmless, observable task in a test directory, for example:

  • list the files in the current directory;
  • read a README file and report its headings; or
  • create a small script containing a supplied line of text.

Watch the transcript and the filesystem. Hermes should emit a structured tool call, receive the result, and then explain what happened. The useful evidence is both sides of the loop: a call with a tool name and arguments, followed by the tool result. If it only tells you the command it would run, nothing was executed. For a write test, inspect the resulting file rather than trusting the assistant’s final sentence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What failure looks like

A model without tool-call support may print raw JSON, imitate a function call as ordinary prose, or repeatedly describe an action without invoking it. Nous Research explicitly warns that models without tool-call support produce plain text instead of structured function calls. Replace the model before changing unrelated Hermes settings. A successful “Reply with OK” request cannot distinguish these cases, because ordinary chat requires no tool schema.

Pick a model for agent work, not just chat

Model example Position in the official examples Best interpretation
gemma4:31b Tool-capable example Suitable starting point for file, terminal, and browser actions when your hardware can handle a 31B model.
gemma2:27b Conversational example without tool calling May answer questions but is not a dependable Hermes action model.
gemma2:9b Conversational example without tool calling Lighter and faster than a 31B model, but not suitable for reliable structured actions according to the guide’s examples.
llama3.2:3b Lightweight conversational example without tool calling Useful for basic dialogue experiments, not a replacement for an agent-capable model.

There is a real trade-off. Larger tool-capable models generally need more RAM, storage, and patience but are a better fit for multi-step work. Smaller chat models start faster and consume fewer resources, yet they can fail at the point where Hermes needs a structured function call. “It can chat” is therefore not an adequate model-selection test.

Compare models on the dimensions that affect your workload: whether tool calls are supported reliably, the context window available to Hermes, RAM and VRAM demand, storage consumed by the download, first-token and sustained latency, and how often the model must be reloaded. A smaller model is only the better choice if it still completes the required actions; otherwise apparent savings become repeated retries and manual intervention.

Keep one known-good model installed while experimenting with alternatives. That gives you a rollback target when a new model answers fluently but stops producing valid calls. When creating a custom variant, use a distinct name so the original tag remains available for comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give Hermes the required context window

Agent tasks consume context quickly: the original request, planning turns, tool schemas, command output, file contents, and the model’s own observations all remain relevant. The current Nous Research guidance says Hermes needs at least 64,000 tokens for agentic work with tools.

With Ollama, create a model variant whose context parameter is explicit. In a new file named Modelfile, put:

FROM gemma4:31b
PARAMETER num_ctx 64000

Build the variant with a new name:

ollama create gemma4-31b-hermes-64k -f Modelfile

In hermes setup, select gemma4-31b-hermes-64k instead of the original model name. If your chosen model cannot support that context size within available memory, use a different model variant or add RAM rather than silently accepting truncated agent sessions. A context setting is a capacity requirement, not a guarantee of quality; the model must also have enough memory to process the longer prompt at a usable speed.

After creating the variant, verify it appears in ollama list or the tags response, then repeat the endpoint test using the new name. This catches spelling errors before Hermes starts a long task. If a setup wizard still shows the old name, reopen it or refresh the model list rather than selecting a similarly named tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tune latency and model loading

CPU or slow-generation timeout

Long context and CPU inference can exceed a short client timeout. Set the Hermes environment variable in ~/.hermes/.env:

HERMES_API_TIMEOUT=1800

This is an environment variable, not a config.yaml key. Restart Hermes after saving it so the process reads the new value. A longer timeout allows a slow request to finish; it does not make generation faster or solve an endpoint that is genuinely unreachable.

Keep the model loaded for a gateway

If Hermes will receive messages continuously through a gateway, configure Ollama with a 24-hour keep-alive. Keeping the model loaded avoids repeated startup delays between messages, at the cost of reserving memory for that period. For occasional command-line use, allowing the model to unload can conserve RAM. The right choice depends on whether your priority is immediate replies or leaving resources available to other applications.

Diagnose slow responses

  • Check whether the model is too large for available RAM or VRAM.
  • Confirm that GPU offload is occurring when a supported GPU is installed.
  • Compare a shorter prompt with a 64K-context task; long contexts increase processing time.
  • Increase HERMES_API_TIMEOUT before concluding that a slow request is broken.
  • Use a smaller tool-capable model only if it still produces structured calls for your workload.

Measure the first response separately from later responses. The first request may include loading weights into RAM or VRAM, while a keep-alive keeps them available afterward. If every request is slow, inspect model size, CPU utilization, GPU memory, and context length before changing Hermes prompts.

Troubleshoot the common failures

“Connection refused” or endpoint errors

  1. Start the Ollama application or service.
  2. Run curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags.
  3. If that request fails, repair Ollama first; Hermes cannot fix a stopped server.
  4. If tags work, verify that Hermes uses the exact base URL ending in /v1, not the tags path.
  5. Confirm that the model name in Hermes exactly matches the name returned by Ollama.

Do not troubleshoot API keys first: local Ollama normally does not authenticate this request. Also check whether Hermes is running inside a container, virtual machine, or remote host; its 127.0.0.1 may not be the same loopback interface where Ollama is listening.

Model rejected because of context

Use a model variant configured for at least 64K context and select that variant in Hermes. A model can be installed and answer short prompts while still failing when Hermes sends its larger tool schema and conversation history. Rebuild the Modelfile variant if the configured name was changed, and confirm the resulting tag is the one selected in the setup screen.

Hermes answers but never acts

Repeat the file or terminal smoke test and inspect whether a structured call appears. If the output is prose or raw JSON, switch to a model documented as tool-capable. Changing the API key will not add tool support to a model that lacks it. If one tool works but another does not, test the simplest tool first, then investigate permissions or the specific integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requests time out

Check model size, available RAM, GPU offload, and context length. For slow CPU inference, set HERMES_API_TIMEOUT=1800 in ~/.hermes/.env, restart Hermes, and test again. A timeout after the model begins generating suggests latency or context pressure; an immediate timeout or refusal points more strongly to service or URL configuration.

Add messaging gateways only after the local CLI works

Once a local tool test passes, run:

hermes gateway setup

The setup flow can connect Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, or email. Treat each gateway as a new security and reliability boundary: messages arrive from a remote service, and the agent may be able to run tools in response.

Keep the local CLI configuration working before adding a gateway. Otherwise, an endpoint, model, and messaging problem become entangled and are harder to isolate. For an always-on gateway, the 24-hour Ollama keep-alive can reduce the delay caused by loading a model for every incoming message. Test with a private account or restricted channel first, and avoid granting broad file or shell access until message routing is understood.

Understand what “local” means for privacy

When Hermes sends inference to Ollama on the same machine, the model execution itself stays local. That does not make every Hermes feature offline. Web search, browser automation, remote MCP services, hosted memory, speech services, messaging gateways, and cloud fallbacks can all send data over the network.

Before calling a deployment private, decide which capabilities are enabled, what files the agent may read, whether shell commands are allowed, and which gateway accounts can submit requests. A local model server reduces one category of exposure; it does not remove network traffic created by optional tools. If you need a strict local boundary, leave cloud models and networked tools disabled and verify that no gateway is forwarding prompts.

Resource cost and operational trade-offs

Running locally avoids per-request model API charges, but it shifts cost into hardware capacity, electricity, storage, and waiting time. The practical minimum in the Nous Research documentation is 8 GB of RAM for 3B models and 5 GB of free storage. A more comfortable setup for 27B-or-larger models calls for at least 32 GB of RAM and 30 GB of storage for multiple models. An NVIDIA GPU with 8 GB or more of VRAM is recommended when faster inference matters.

Keeping several model tags or 64K-context variants multiplies storage use. Keeping a model loaded for a 24-hour gateway reserves memory even while no message is arriving. CPU-only operation lowers hardware requirements but increases latency, especially for a 31B model. Decide whether your workload values lower infrastructure spending, faster responses, larger models, or a smaller privacy boundary; no single configuration optimizes all four.

In either case, success means more than seeing a response. The dependable installation is the one in which Ollama serves a tool-capable model, Hermes reaches the /v1 endpoint, the model has enough context for agentic work, and a controlled task produces a real structured tool call.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the quickest way to connect Hermes Agent to Ollama?

Run ollama launch hermes. The launcher can install Hermes, configure Ollama, let you choose a model, and offer gateway setup.

What URL should I enter in Hermes setup?

Choose Custom Endpoint and enter http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1 or http://localhost:11434/v1. Include /v1; /api/tags is only a health-check endpoint.

Does local Ollama need an API key?

No. Leave the field empty. If the setup form requires text, use a placeholder such as no-key; it is not a real credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Hermes chat but fail to edit files or run commands?

The selected model may lack structured tool-call support. Test a harmless file or terminal task and switch to a documented tool-capable model if Hermes emits prose or raw JSON instead of a structured call.

How much context does Hermes need with Ollama?

Current Nous Research guidance requires at least 64,000 tokens for agentic work with tools. Create an Ollama Modelfile variant with PARAMETER num_ctx 64000 and select that variant in Hermes.

What hardware is recommended?

The guidance lists 8 GB RAM for 3B models, 32 GB or more for 27B-plus models, at least 5 GB free storage (30 GB recommended for multiple models), and an NVIDIA GPU with 8 GB or more of VRAM for faster inference.

How can I fix slow or timed-out requests?

Check model size, RAM, GPU offload, and context length. For slow CPU inference, set HERMES_API_TIMEOUT=1800 in ~/.hermes/.env and restart Hermes. A 24-hour Ollama keep-alive helps always-on gateways avoid reload delays.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Hermes with Ollama completely private and offline?

Local inference stays on the machine, but web search, browser automation, remote MCP, hosted memory, speech, gateways, and cloud fallbacks can use the network. Enable only the services whose data flow you accept.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with ollama launch hermes, or configure Hermes manually against http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1. Use a model that supports structured tool calls, provide at least 64K tokens of context, and verify a real file or terminal action. Then tune timeout, keep-alive, hardware, gateways, and privacy settings for the workload you actually intend to run.
