What importing does
Multiverse-Core’s import command registers an existing world folder with the server. It does not create a new world from a seed and it does not convert a map into another dimension. The command is described as “Imports an existing world folder.” Your source folder must already contain the world data that Minecraft and Multiverse expect.

The operation has four decisions that determine whether it succeeds:
- Dimension environment: identify the source as an Overworld, Nether, End, or another dimension represented by a supported namespaced key.
- Custom generator: provide the generator identifier when the world depends on a generator plugin.
- Folder validity: point Multiverse at the actual world root, not a parent directory or an extra nested folder.
- Registration state: determine whether the world is new to Multiverse or already configured but unloaded.
Choosing the wrong environment or generator can cause a world to load incorrectly or suffer serious damage. Treat the environment and generator values as part of the map’s identity, not as optional labels.

Before you import: prepare the folder safely
Keep the intended world name
The folder name becomes the name you use in the Multiverse command. If the folder is named my_world, the basic command is /mv import my_world normal. Decide on the final name before importing; renaming folders while the server is running can leave the server and Multiverse pointing at different paths.
Copy the complete world
Put the full existing world directory in a location the Minecraft server can access as a world directory. Do not copy only a visible region subfolder or selected files. Preserve the directory structure delivered by the map author or exported by the source server.

Make a backup of the original folder before attempting an import. If the environment or generator is wrong, restoring the untouched copy is safer than trying to reconstruct damaged world data.
Check that you have the world root
A common mistake is selecting a container folder that holds the real world one level deeper. The folder named in the command must be the directory that contains the world’s own data and region content. Current Multiverse messages refer to expected world data and region directories and report an invalid-folder error when that structure is not detected.
If a downloaded archive extracts as map/map/..., the second map may be the actual world root. Inspect the contents and use the directory containing the world data and region directories, rather than blindly using the outer extraction folder.
Identify the correct environment
Normal (Overworld)
Use normal for a standard Overworld map:
/mv import my_world normalReplace my_world with the exact folder name, including capitalization where your server’s filesystem treats names as distinct.
Nether
Use nether when the folder is a Nether world:
/mv import my_nether netherDo not select nether merely because you want Nether terrain. The value must match the dimension in which the existing data was generated.

End
Use end for an End world:
/mv import my_end endNamespaced or other dimensions
Current command usage also documents namespaced dimension keys where applicable. If the source world belongs to another dimension, use the exact key accepted by the Minecraft and Multiverse setup rather than guessing a short name. Confirm the key in the relevant generator or server documentation before importing.
When you cannot establish the source dimension, stop and identify it first. Importing with a convenient but incorrect value risks loading the map with incompatible dimension settings.
Check for a custom world generator
A world made with a custom generator is not equivalent to an ordinary seed-based world. Multiverse requires the correct environment and generator for an existing world. The generator plugin must be installed and enabled, and its documented identifier must be supplied exactly as that plugin specifies.
The general form is:
/mv import custom_map normal --generator <generator[:id]>Replace <generator[:id]> with the real identifier. The folder name alone does not reveal that identifier reliably. Do not invent one from the map’s filename, and do not omit the generator when the map depends on it.
If you do not know which generator created the map, obtain that information from the map’s documentation or the administrator of the source server. Install and enable the required generator before importing. A missing or mismatched generator can make terrain regenerate incorrectly around existing areas or prevent proper loading.
Import procedure from start to finish
1. Stop changes to the source copy
Ensure the folder you are about to import is a consistent copy. If it came from another running server, obtain a proper copy while that server is stopped or otherwise quiescent. Keep the original backup separate from the working copy.
2. Place the folder where the server can read it
Move or copy the complete directory into the server’s world-accessible location. Preserve the final folder name you intend to use as the Multiverse world name. Check ownership and filesystem permissions if the server process cannot read the files.

3. Validate the directory level
Open the folder you plan to name in the command and verify that it contains the expected world data and region directories. If those directories are inside another nested folder, use the nested folder as the world root instead.
4. Choose the environment
Classify the source as normal, nether, end, or the appropriate namespaced key. Record this choice before issuing the command so you do not guess while importing.
5. Confirm generator requirements
For a standard world, the two-argument command is sufficient. For a custom-generator map, install and enable the generator plugin and prepare its documented identifier for the --generator option.
6. Run the import command
From the server console, run the command without a leading slash, or run it in game with a leading slash and the necessary permission:

Read the response rather than assuming success. A successful import registers the existing folder. An invalid-folder, permission, already-known-world, or environment-related response tells you which branch of troubleshooting to follow.
8. Test the imported world
After registration, enter the world using your normal Multiverse workflow and inspect several areas. Check that terrain, structures, dimensions, and generator-dependent features behave as expected before allowing players to build. If anything indicates an environment or generator mismatch, stop using the working copy and return to the backup while you verify the configuration.
Import versus load: use the command that matches the state
Importing and loading are different operations. Import is for an existing folder Multiverse does not yet know about. Loading is for a world that is already configured but currently unloaded.

If the server reports that the world exists but is unloaded, do not keep repeating /mv import. Use:
/mv load <worldname>Importing the same registered world again can create confusion about which configuration is authoritative.
Permissions and where to run the command
You can issue the command from the server console or in game. In game, the account needs the multiverse.core.import permission through the server’s permission system. A permission error is not evidence that the folder or environment is wrong; have an administrator grant the node, then rerun the unchanged command.
The console generally avoids chat-command permission limitations, but it still requires the Multiverse-Core command to be available on that server. Always run the command against the server instance that owns the folder you copied.

“Invalid folder” or missing world data
Recheck the path and nesting first. The named directory must be the actual world root and must contain the expected world data and region content. If you copied an archive, extract it completely and inspect whether an extra top-level directory was created.
Multiverse exposes a --skip-folder-check option, but the available messages do not establish that bypass as a generally safe repair. Do not use it to conceal an unknown folder layout. First prove that the folder is complete and correctly selected; use a bypass only when you understand why the normal validation is inappropriate and have a verified backup.
The environment is wrong or uncertain
Stop the import attempt and identify whether the source is Overworld, Nether, End, or another namespaced dimension. The command reference warns that incorrect environment values can cause serious problems. Correct the command rather than trying random values.
The generator is missing or mismatched
Install and enable the generator plugin required by the map, then use the exact identifier documented by that plugin. A folder name does not provide enough information to infer a generator identifier. If the map was created by a custom generator and you import it as a standard world, do not continue exploring or building until the generator setup is corrected.

The world is already known
If Multiverse says the world exists but is unloaded, switch to /mv load <worldname>. This indicates a registration/load-state issue, not a request to copy the folder again.
You receive a permission error
Have an administrator grant multiverse.core.import to the importing account through the server’s permission system. Then repeat the same import command from the correct server context.
The command succeeds but the map behaves incorrectly
Recheck the two highest-risk values: environment and generator. Restore the untouched backup if necessary, verify the source dimension and generator documentation, and import a clean working copy with the corrected values. Do not treat newly generated or visibly damaged terrain as a harmless warning.

This matrix keeps the four checks separate. A valid folder does not compensate for the wrong dimension, and a correct dimension does not compensate for a missing custom generator.

Safety checklist before making the world available
- Keep an untouched backup of the complete source folder.
- Confirm the command’s world name exactly matches the folder you placed on the server.
- Verify that the selected directory contains the expected world data and region directories.
- Identify the original dimension before choosing
normal,nether,end, or a namespaced key. - Install and enable any required custom generator and copy its documented identifier exactly.
- Check whether Multiverse already knows the world; use
/mv loadfor a known but unloaded world. - Ensure the in-game operator has
multiverse.core.importor run the command from the console. - Inspect the world on the working copy before permitting normal player activity.
Frequently overlooked details
Importing is not creating
/mv import does not generate a fresh seed-based world. It registers the blocks, entities, and files already present in the folder. If you wanted a new world, that is a different operation; importing is specifically for an existing folder.
The folder name and world name are connected
The name you place in <worldname> is the name Multiverse uses for the imported world. Keep it stable across commands, especially when switching from import to load.
Validation is useful, not cosmetic
The folder check protects against importing a parent directory, incomplete extraction, or another directory that is not a Minecraft world root. Bypassing it without diagnosing the cause removes a useful safety signal.
Environment and generator are independent checks
A map can have a correct folder structure and still be unsafe to load with the wrong environment or generator. Verify both before testing the result.
