If Chrome on a computer asks for biometrics when you fill a saved password, the setting is in Google Password Manager. Open More → Passwords and autofill → Google Password Manager → Settings, then enable Use Windows Hello when filling passwords on a PC or Use your screen lock when filling passwords on a Mac. Google says this desktop biometric option is off by default. On Android, check which autofill service Chrome is using instead; Android password autofill and passkey sign-in are separate flows.
Set up biometric confirmation for saved passwords on a computer
In Chrome, open More → Passwords and autofill → Google Password Manager → Settings. The setting you need depends on your computer:

- Windows PC: turn on Use Windows Hello when filling passwords.
- Mac: turn on Use your screen lock when filling passwords.
Complete the on-screen confirmation. Google says desktop biometric authentication is off by default. When enabled, the device’s authentication can be used to confirm filling a saved password and to reveal, copy, or edit saved passwords. See Google Chrome Help: Manage passwords in Chrome — Computer.

Check the autofill provider on Android
Chrome for Android has a separate provider setting. To use Google Password Manager for password autofill, open More → Settings → Autofill services and choose Autofill with Google. If you choose another service, Chrome gets autofill data from that third-party password manager. Changing the provider restarts Chrome; on a work or school installation, an administrator may control the setting. Details are in Google Chrome Help: Fill in forms automatically in Chrome — Android.

For a saved password, visit a site where you have previously signed in, open its sign-in form, then select the username field to choose saved sign-in information. If the expected credentials do not appear, check that Google is the selected autofill service and that the site is one you have used before. Tell a password-fill prompt from a passkey prompt
A biometric check during saved-password autofill on a desktop is not the same as Android passkey sign-in. A passkey is a different sign-in credential: Google says an Android passkey stored in Google Password Manager can be used by scanning a fingerprint or face, or by entering a short PIN. Google also states specifically of Android passkeys: “Your biometric data is stored on your device and isn’t shared with Google.” That statement concerns this passkey flow, not every biometric authentication method. See Google Chrome Help: Manage passkeys in Chrome — Android.

What a Chrome authentication prompt means
Chrome may ask you to confirm your identity when you use or manage saved passwords. Google lists your Google Account username and password, or facial or fingerprint recognition, as possible confirmation methods. A prompt by itself does not establish that you need to buy or connect a new biometric accessory. For Google’s explanation of password and autofill protections, see How Chrome protects your autofill and password data.
