You may not be able to withdraw all supplied assets while a loan is active, and variable borrowing costs can change as pool demand shifts. In Aave V3, withdrawals depend on both available reserve liquidity and the position’s health factor; liquidation becomes possible when that factor falls below 1. Other DeFi lending markets may use different rules, so check the documentation for the specific protocol, asset, and network.
Can I withdraw collateral while I still have a loan?
Not always. In Aave, a withdrawal requires enough unborrowed underlying tokens in the asset’s reserve. If the supplied asset also backs an active borrow, the amount you can withdraw is further limited by whether the remaining collateral keeps the account’s health factor above the liquidation threshold. Aave’s market operations documentation describes previewing the effect on health factor before confirming a withdrawal.

If a withdrawal fails or the interface offers a smaller amount than expected, check both the reserve’s available liquidity and the health-factor effect of removing collateral. These are distinct constraints: a position can have adequate collateral but face insufficient pool liquidity, or enough pool liquidity but be unable to withdraw safely without weakening its collateral position. Aave explains withdrawals and liquidity and market operations; rules on another lending protocol may differ.
Why did my variable borrow rate go up?
In Aave V3, borrowing rates respond to reserve utilization: the share of supplied assets currently borrowed. The rate model has an optimal utilization point, with one slope below it and a steeper slope above it. When utilization moves past that point, the model increases rates more sharply to reflect tighter available liquidity. Governance-set reserve parameters also affect the curve.

Supplier yield is funded by borrower interest, net of the reserve factor. Rates are live rather than fixed: a displayed rate is meaningful only for its specific reserve and observation time, and can change as borrowing and liquidity change. For the mechanics, see Aave’s V3 overview.

Aave’s health factor relates the value of collateral to outstanding debt, adjusted by the collateral’s weighted average liquidation threshold:

This is an illustrative calculation, not a current market statistic or a universal safe target. A price decline in collateral, accrued interest on debt, or removing collateral can lower the factor. At what point can collateral be liquidated?
For Aave, a health factor below 1 makes a position eligible for liquidation. A permissionless liquidator may repay eligible debt and receive collateral of equivalent value plus a liquidation bonus. Liquidation does not necessarily mean the entire debt is repaid; the amount that can be liquidated depends on the protocol’s rules and current market deployment.
Aave’s help page describes implementation-specific conditions: up to 50% of total debt may be liquidated when health factor is above 0.95 and both collateral and debt are at least $2,000; up to 100% may be liquidated when health factor is 0.95 or below, or when either value is below $2,000. The page also describes minimum remaining amounts for partial liquidations. These figures and execution details are not general DeFi rules and may be subject to changes. How can I reduce liquidation risk?
- Add collateral: Supplying more collateral can raise the health factor, if the protocol accepts the asset and it is credited to the position.
- Repay debt: Paying down part of the borrow reduces debt and can improve the factor.
- Preview a collateral withdrawal: Before removing collateral, use an available preview to check its effect on the position.
- Account for moving inputs: Collateral prices, accrued interest, and reserve-specific liquidation thresholds affect the result; future price, rate, liquidity, oracle, or protocol changes can alter risk.
Adding collateral or repaying debt can improve a health factor, but neither guarantees that a position will remain safe. Aave’s health factor guidance discusses the role of volatility and correlation; do not treat any single buffer as safe for every asset combination.
