Google Classroom is where you access a course; Google Meet is where its live video lesson takes place. First join the Classroom course with the teacher’s code, link, or email invitation if you are not enrolled; then open the class’s Meet link to attend the lesson. Use the school account associated with the class, and remember that you may have to wait until the teacher starts the meeting.
This guide covers joining a Classroom course and its Meet session on a computer or mobile device, plus common access and audio/video problems.

Google Classroom and Google Meet: What’s the Difference?
Google Classroom is the course hub for class membership, announcements, assignments, and materials. Google Meet is the video-meeting service. Joining a Classroom course does not automatically put you into a live meeting: you must open the teacher’s Meet link separately when it is time for class.

Students can find a Meet link at the top of the class’s Stream or Classwork page, or in a teacher’s post. A teacher may hide the link, post a one-time link, or not create one. School administrators can also restrict Meet.
Prerequisites Before You Join
- Correct Google account: sign in with the account used for your school or Classroom enrollment.
- Class access: join the course with a class code, class link, or email invitation if you have not enrolled yet.
- Device and connection: use a working internet connection and an updated browser or the relevant mobile apps.
- Permissions: allow camera and microphone access if you want to use them.
School account and administrator policies determine who can join a meeting. A personal Gmail account is not a universal workaround for a school account that is denied access.
Join the Google Classroom Class First
If the class does not appear in Classroom, enroll before trying to join its live meeting. Google lists three ways to join: a class code, a class link, or an email invitation.

Join with a class code on a computer
- Go to classroom.google.com and sign in with the account permitted by your school.
- Click Join class.
- Enter the code from your teacher and click Join.
Google says class codes are 6–8 characters, use letters and numbers, and cannot contain spaces or special symbols. If the code fails, check for extra spaces and ask your teacher whether it is still active. Source: Google Classroom Help: Join a class with a class code.
Join with a class link or email invitation
- For a class link, open the link supplied by your teacher, switch to the permitted account if needed, and click Join.
- For an email invitation, open the invitation and click Join. You may also be able to accept it from the class card in the Classroom app.

How to Join a Google Meet Class
Once you are enrolled in the course, start from its Classroom Meet link when possible. The link may be at the top of Stream or Classwork, or inside an announcement, assignment, or question.
Join on a computer
- Go to classroom.google.com and sign in.
- Open the class you want to attend.
- On the Stream or Classwork page, click the Meet link. If it is not there, check recent teacher posts.
- In Meet, confirm you are using the same account associated with the class.
- Allow camera and microphone access if prompted, then click Join now or the join control shown.
If the teacher has not started the meeting, you may have to wait or be admitted. Opening the link does not guarantee that you can enter immediately. Source: Google Classroom Help: Join a video meeting and Google Classroom Help: Meet access for students.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesJoin on Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open the Google Classroom app and select the class.
- Tap the Meet link on Stream or Classwork, or open the link in a teacher’s post.
- Check that Meet is using the school account associated with the class.
- Allow camera and microphone access if prompted.
- Tap Join meeting, Join now, or the equivalent control shown by the app.
The link may open the Google Meet app or a browser, and labels can differ by device. Google advises mobile users to install the Meet app. Source: Google Classroom Help: Use Meet with Classroom on Android.
Join with a direct Meet link
If your teacher sent a link by email, chat, or another method, you can use it to attend the session. A direct Meet link does not, by itself, enroll you in the Classroom course.
- Open the teacher’s link.
- Sign in or switch to the school account associated with the class.
- Allow device permissions if prompted, then select the join control shown.
- If Meet asks you to request access, follow the prompt and wait for the teacher to admit you.
For Teachers: Starting and Managing a Classroom Meet
Teachers can create a class Meet link and make it visible to students. Meet must be enabled for the primary teacher’s account for Classroom Meet integration to work. In a Classroom-created meeting, the teacher is the host and current co-teachers become co-hosts. Audio, Video, and Access Troubleshooting
There is no Meet link
Check Stream, Classwork, and recent teacher posts. If the link is absent, the teacher may not have created it, may have hidden it, or may have shared a one-time link elsewhere. Also check that you are enrolled and signed in with the right account. Ask the teacher to confirm the link is visible and that Meet is enabled for the class.
Meet says to ask to join, or the teacher is not there
You may be using the wrong account, the meeting may require approval, or the teacher may not have started it yet. Switch to the school account, reopen the Classroom link, and wait for the teacher to start or admit you. If access is still denied, ask the teacher to confirm your enrollment and the class’s access settings.
Microphone or camera does not work
- Allow camera and microphone access in the browser or app. If you denied permission earlier, change it in the device or browser’s site settings and reload Meet.
- Check that a physical camera shutter or mute control is not enabled.
- In Meet, select the intended camera, microphone, and speaker.
- Close other apps using the camera or microphone, then reload or restart Meet.
- Try joining with the camera off if video is unreliable; use headphones if you hear an echo.
Permission controls differ by browser and device. If the problem continues on a school-managed device, ask the school administrator or teacher for help.
Classroom or Meet will not load
- Check your internet connection and reload the page or reopen the app.
- Close unrelated apps or browser tabs that may be using the network or device.
- Try an updated supported browser or the official mobile app.
- Confirm that you are signed in with the account used for the class.
If the link fails only on a school network or managed device, network filtering or administrator settings may be involved. Contact your teacher or school support.

The class code does not work or the class is missing
Check that you are signed into the correct account and that the code has no spaces or extra characters. If the class still does not appear, the invitation may need to be accepted, or the teacher may need to resend the invitation or provide a current code.

- Confusing enrollment with the meeting: joining Classroom does not automatically join a live Meet.
- Using the wrong account: use the account associated with the class and permitted by the school.
- Assuming the link is broken: the teacher may not have started the meeting or may need to admit you.
- Using an old link: reopen the current link from Classroom or ask the teacher to confirm it.
- Expecting a personal Gmail account to bypass restrictions: school account and administrator policies control access.
Classroom Meet Link vs Direct Meet Link
Both routes can open a meeting, but the Classroom link is the clearest starting point for an enrolled student. A direct link is useful when the teacher sends it separately, but it does not enroll you in the course.
| Method | Where you start | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom Meet link | Class Stream, Classwork, or a teacher’s post | Students already enrolled in the course |
| Direct Meet link | Teacher’s email, chat, or other message | Attending a session when the teacher shared the link separately |
| Class code, class link, or email invitation | Classroom or teacher’s invitation | Enrolling in the course before attending its meeting |
FAQ

Why don’t I see the Meet link in Classroom?

Can I join without turning on my camera?
Usually you can turn off your camera before joining or during the meeting. Whether you can enter, and whether you can use audio, depends on the meeting and school settings.

Do not assume it will work. School account and administrator policies determine which accounts can attend. Use the account associated with your Classroom enrollment and ask the teacher if access is denied.

No. You can use Classroom in a computer browser, or use the mobile apps and links available on your device. The exact route and labels can vary by device.
