How To Fix Discord Screen Share Flickering [7 Verified Methods]

Diagnose whether Discord screen-share flicker affects you or viewers, then test stream quality, Discord’s separate hardware-acceleration settings, capture mode, and platform-specific fixes. The guide uses current Discord settings paths and verified troubleshooting steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fix Discord screen-share flickering, first check whether it affects only viewers or your own desktop too, then lower the stream to 720p/30fps and test a different capture type. If that does not help, check both Discord hardware-acceleration settings, use Borderless mode for games, and follow the platform-specific steps below.

These seven methods follow Discord’s current troubleshooting guidance. Test after each change so you can identify the cause rather than changing several settings at once.

First, identify where the flicker occurs

  • Only viewers see flicker: The issue may be in Discord’s capture, encoding, network delivery, or the viewer’s video decoding.
  • Your desktop flickers while sharing: Check GPU and capture-method conflicts, especially with games, browser windows, overlays, or hardware acceleration.
  • The whole computer freezes, the mouse lags, or audio pops: This is different from ordinary stream flicker. Discord reports a specific issue on some systems with AMD Ryzen processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards. Its suggested checks include BIOS settings, GeForce Experience, and PCIe 3.0. See Discord’s computer-freeze troubleshooting guide.

7 verified methods to fix Discord screen-share flickering

1. Lower the stream’s frame rate and resolution

Higher resolution and frame rate require more graphics processing, encoding work, and bandwidth. Discord recommends lowering stream quality for poor-quality or lagging streams. Test at 720p/30fps; if that stops the flicker, your original settings may have exceeded what your system, connection, or video pipeline could handle.

In a server voice channel:

  1. Hover over the Picture-in-Picture stream preview.
  2. Select the gear icon, then Stream Quality.
  3. Lower the frame rate and/or resolution, then test again.

In a DM, select the down arrow on the stream controls, open Stream Quality, and lower the frame rate and/or resolution. Discord says desktop users can stream up to 720p/30fps; Nitro and Nitro Classic can stream up to 4K/60fps. Stream-quality controls are not adjustable when using Discord in a browser. See Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share guide.

2. Test both Discord hardware-acceleration settings

Discord has two separate settings called Hardware Acceleration. Changing one does not necessarily change the other. Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide recommends turning off the video setting for screen-share problems.

To test streaming/video hardware acceleration:

  1. Open User Settings and select Voice & Video.
  2. Select the Video tab and scroll to Advanced.
  3. Turn off Hardware Acceleration, restart Discord, and test sharing.

If the problem remains, test the separate general setting: open User Settings > Advanced, turn off Hardware Acceleration, and restart Discord. For background on the two settings, see Discord’s discussion of the duplicate setting names.

3. Change what you share, and use Borderless mode for games

Stop sharing and test an application window instead of the whole screen, or the whole screen instead of a window. Discord uses different capture paths depending on what you share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are sharing a game on Windows, switch it from Full Screen or Full Screen Exclusive to Borderless or Borderless Windowed, if available. Discord says Windows Graphics Capture does not work with full-screen-exclusive games and recommends Borderless for screen-share performance. See Discord’s guide to capturing application windows.

On Windows, the same guide explains how to inspect the capture methods: enable Developer Mode under User Settings > Advanced, start a call or stream, click Voice/Video Connected, then open the Screen Share tab in the debug panel. It shows frames captured by each method. Do not assume an old capture-method toggle is a universal fix; Discord says the default method can vary by Windows version and capture situation.

4. Run Discord as administrator on Windows

A permissions mismatch can occur if the game or app being captured runs with higher privileges than Discord. Discord lists administrator mode as a Windows troubleshooting step.

  1. Fully close Discord.
  2. Right-click the Discord shortcut and select Run as administrator.
  3. Start sharing again and check whether the flicker stops.

5. Update Discord, your operating system, and graphics drivers

Discord recommends updating the desktop app, operating system, graphics-card drivers, and related graphics software. If you use a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, a GPU assignment mismatch can also affect capture.

6. Fix screen-recording permissions on macOS

On current macOS versions, Discord needs permission to record the screen and system audio. Apple’s current setting is called Screen & System Audio Recording.

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
  2. Enable Discord. If it is already enabled, turn it off and on again.
  3. Quit Discord fully and reopen it before testing.

See Apple’s screen and system audio recording permissions guide. Discord’s macOS screen-sharing guide describes choosing a screen, window, or app and setting stream quality, resolution, and frame rate before starting.

7. Reset Discord’s voice and video settings

  1. Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
  2. Select the Debugging tab, then Reset Voice and Video Settings.
  3. Restart Discord and test screen sharing again.

If the issue persists, close Discord completely before clearing its cache. Discord lists these cache locations: %appdata%/discord/Cache on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache on macOS. See Discord’s troubleshooting guide.

Additional checks if flickering continues

Disable Clips if the issue happens while gaming

Discord Clips is an additional capture workload, not a confirmed universal cause of screen-share flicker. If the problem began after enabling Clips or happens only while gaming and streaming, test with it off: open User Settings > Clips and turn off Enable Clips. Discord lists Clips as Early Access for Nitro members and notes that it may affect game performance on lower-end hardware. See Discord’s Clips information.

Collect details before reporting a bug

If none of the fixes works, record your operating system and version, Discord client type, GPU model and driver version, what you shared, stream resolution and frame rate, and whether the flicker affects you, viewers, or both. A recording of the issue and Discord debug logs can help with a report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging and enable debug logging.
  2. Reproduce the flicker.
  3. Return to the Debugging tab and select Upload under Debug Logging.

FAQ

Why do viewers see flicker when my own desktop looks normal?

What stream quality should I test first?

Try 720p/30fps. Discord lists that as the maximum for all users, and it is a useful lower-load diagnostic setting.

Why does a shared game flicker in full-screen mode?

Discord says Windows Graphics Capture does not work with full-screen-exclusive games. If the game offers it, switch to Borderless or Borderless Windowed and test again.

Is Discord’s Hardware Acceleration setting in Advanced the only one?

No. Discord also has a separate Hardware Acceleration setting under Voice & Video > Video > Advanced. Test them separately; changing one does not necessarily change the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the whole computer freezes while sharing?

A complete freeze, mouse lag, or audio pops are not ordinary stream flicker. Discord reports a specific issue affecting some AMD Ryzen and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series systems. Follow Discord’s guidance for computer freezes during screen sharing.
