“Gemini Maps” refers to two different Google experiences. In the Gemini app, you can ask for places, travel times and directions, inspect the results on an interactive map, and—where available—export pinned places to a Google Maps list. In Google Maps itself, Gemini appears during active navigation to answer route questions, search near your route or destination, and carry out supported navigation actions.
Choose the workflow that matches your task: use Gemini first for research and trip planning; use Gemini inside Google Maps when you are already navigating. The requirements, controls and limitations are not the same.

Gemini Apps and Gemini in Google Maps: what is the difference?
The name can be confusing because both experiences use Gemini and Google Maps data. Start in the Gemini app when you are deciding where to go or comparing places. Start in Google Maps when a route is already running and you need hands-free help on the way.

| Question | Gemini app (Gemini Apps) | Gemini inside Google Maps |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you start? | Gemini app or gemini.google.com | Google Maps on Android or iPhone/iPad |
| Is an active route required? | No. You can ask for places, travel times or directions before starting navigation. | Yes for the documented assistance: start navigation to a destination first. |
| What can it do? | Find places, provide place details and directions, show mentioned places on an interactive map, and export pinned places to a custom Maps list when the control is available. | Answer route questions, search near or along the route, find a place near the destination, add a stop, and perform supported route actions such as avoiding tolls or showing alternative routes. |
| Traffic information | It is not a live-traffic source. | It assists within an active Google Maps navigation session; the specific traffic or arrival estimate still depends on Maps and your current route. |
| Important platform note | Expanded place features roll out gradually and have age, account and language requirements. | On iPhone/iPad, Google says Gemini is not currently available for CarPlay. |
Check these requirements before you begin
For place searches in Gemini
- Sign in to Gemini with a personal Google Account.
- Turn on Keep Activity. Google says the Gemini Apps place-and-directions connection is unavailable when this setting is off.
- For the expanded Maps features, Google’s documented eligibility is at least 18 years old, a personal account, and asking about a place in English. Availability is being rolled out gradually, so two otherwise eligible accounts may not show the same controls.
- Allow device location if you want Gemini to use your current position. Saved Home and Work locations can also be used for directions.
The connection is not available in Live chats or in Gemini in Google Messages. If you use a work, school or other managed account, the personal-account requirement may be the reason a feature is missing.

For Gemini during Google Maps navigation
- Install and open Google Maps on Android or iPhone/iPad, sign in, and start navigation to a destination.
- Use “Hey Google” or tap the Gemini control while navigation is active.
- On iPhone/iPad, check Google Maps navigation settings for the documented hands-free access option if you want to invoke Gemini by voice.
- Do not expect the Gemini control inside CarPlay on iPhone/iPad; Google currently says it is unavailable there.
Find places and get directions in the Gemini app
Gemini understands ordinary questions. Include the place type, area, travel mode and any constraint that matters. A precise request usually produces a more useful answer than a one-word search.
- Open Gemini and sign in. Use the Gemini mobile app or go to gemini.google.com. Confirm that Keep Activity is on before asking for a place or route.
- Ask for the place or journey. State where you are starting, where you want to go, how you will travel and any limit or preference. You can ask for a nearby business, a travel time between cities, walking time between landmarks or a place that meets a group or distance requirement.
- Inspect the answer. Follow a linked place name or preview card to open its details. Depending on availability, the details page may include images or videos, reviews and an AI-generated summary. Opening the place in Google Maps takes you to the Maps detail page.
- Use the response map. Tap or click the interactive map in the Gemini response to see the places mentioned in the conversation.
- Save a group of results when offered. On the documented mobile workflow, choose Export to Google Maps to save all pinned places to a custom Maps list. The export control is part of a gradual rollout, so it may not appear even when place search works.
A prompt formula that supplies the useful details
Use this pattern and replace the bracketed parts with your own information:
Find [kind of place] near [destination or area], [constraint]. Give me directions by [travel mode] and avoid [preference].
For example, you could ask for a park within a 10-minute drive, a restaurant that can seat six people, or the walking time between two landmarks. These requests work best when you name the starting point or destination instead of relying on an ambiguous neighborhood name.

Examples of questions Gemini can answer
- “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?”
- “How long is the drive from Atlanta to Orlando?”
- “How long does it take to walk from Buckingham Palace to Big Ben in London?”
- “What’s a nearby spot for authentic Mexican food that can seat a group of six?”
- “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.”
These are natural-language examples of the documented place and directions features. Treat the response as a starting point: open the place card, check the underlying Maps details and confirm that the location, hours and route suit your plans.
Plan a route with travel modes and constraints
Gemini can discuss a route before you begin navigation. Put the decision you need in the question instead of asking only “How do I get there?”
Specify the travel mode
Say whether you plan to drive or walk, and ask for the relevant measure: driving duration between cities or walking time between landmarks, for example. If the mode is omitted, the answer may not match the way you intend to travel.

Add a time, distance or group constraint
Useful constraints include a maximum driving time, a nearby area, a destination with a playground, a restaurant large enough for a group, or a place close to your final stop. Put the limit in the first request so Gemini can filter the suggestions rather than adding it after a long list.

State route preferences
You can ask for a preference such as avoiding tolls when requesting directions. Keep the wording explicit: “avoid tolls” is clearer than “take the cheaper way.” When the answer includes a route, open it in Maps to review the actual directions before leaving.
Understand what pre-trip planning does not provide
The Gemini Apps Maps connection does not provide live traffic updates. It also does not replace Google Maps navigation. A travel time in a Gemini answer is not a promise about conditions at departure, and the feature does not maintain a live, turn-by-turn route in the Gemini chat.
Use Gemini in Google Maps while you are navigating
This is the separate, in-navigation workflow. It is designed for questions and actions that arise after you have started a route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Google Maps and choose a destination. Confirm the route, then tap Start to begin navigation.
- Invoke Gemini. Say “Hey Google” or tap the Gemini control. On iPhone/iPad, enable the hands-free navigation option first if you want voice access.
- Ask a route question or request an action. Gemini can answer questions such as “What’s my next turn?” or “When will I arrive?” It can also handle supported requests such as “Avoid tolls” or “Show alternative routes.”
- Search near the route or destination. Ask for a type of place and a relevant requirement. Google’s documented example is: “Find me a cafe near my destination that serves tiramisu.”
- Add a useful stop. When the result supports it, ask Gemini to find a place near the route or destination and add it as a stop. Review the proposed stop and route in Maps before continuing.
- Ask about a destination or result. Gemini can answer follow-up questions about a destination or a place returned by search, so you can clarify what you are seeing without leaving the navigation session.
Language, voice and location behavior
Google says Gemini in Maps uses the language and voice preferences set for the signed-in account. Its answers are based on your precise-location preferences. If a result seems too broad or uses the wrong language, check the account’s language and voice settings and the location permission used by Maps.

What the Gemini Apps Maps connection cannot do
- No location-history saving: using the connection does not save a location history.
- No access to all saved places: directions can use saved Home and Work locations, but the connection does not access other saved places in your Maps account.
- No live traffic feed: do not use a Gemini Apps answer as a current traffic report.
- No review posting: Gemini Apps cannot let you add a review through this connection.
- No universal feature set: map cards, expanded place details and export controls may vary because Google is rolling the features out gradually.
- No CarPlay Gemini on iPhone/iPad: Google’s current iPhone/iPad help documentation says Gemini is not available for CarPlay.
These limits are why the two workflows should not be treated as interchangeable. Gemini can help you decide and ask questions, while Google Maps remains the place to inspect the active route and navigation controls.

There is no map, place card or export option
- Check that you are signed in to a personal Google Account and that Keep Activity is on.
- If you are trying the expanded place features, confirm that you meet the documented age and English-language requirements.
- Try the Gemini mobile app or gemini.google.com again later. Gradual rollout means the controls may not yet be enabled for your account.
- Ask about a specific place or area rather than using Live chat or Gemini in Google Messages, where the connection is not available.
The answer uses the wrong starting point
Name the starting location, destination and travel mode in one prompt. If you want to use your current position, grant device-location permission and state “where I am now.” For a known location, use a full address, landmark or saved Home/Work label.
The route does not match your preference
Restate the preference in direct terms, such as avoiding tolls, then open the proposed route in Google Maps. For an active trip, use Gemini inside Maps and request “Show alternative routes” or another supported control. Do not assume that a conversational answer has changed the active route until Maps visibly updates it.

A place detail looks incomplete or stale
Open the linked place in Google Maps and check its detail page directly. Gemini may show available images, videos, reviews or an AI summary, but those details and opening hours can vary by place and availability. Verify important information before travelling.
A practical workflow for planning a day out
- Discover in Gemini: ask for the category, area, travel mode and constraints.
- Filter the suggestions: open place cards and inspect the details rather than relying on names in the chat.
- Map the candidates: tap the interactive map to see where the mentioned places sit relative to one another.
- Save the set: use Export to Google Maps if that control is available on your account and device.
- Start the trip in Maps: choose the final destination and begin navigation.
- Use in-navigation Gemini only for the live task: ask for the next turn, an arrival estimate, an alternative route or a suitable stop near the route.
- Verify changes on the map: check that a requested stop or route option has actually been added before driving on.
Which workflow should you use?
| Your situation | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are choosing among restaurants, parks or shops. | Gemini app | It can search in natural language, show place details and put mentioned places on an interactive map. |
| You need a travel time between two cities or landmarks. | Gemini app | You can ask before navigation and specify driving or walking. |
| You are already driving and need the next turn or arrival time. | Gemini in Google Maps | It operates within an active navigation session. |
| You want a cafe near the route or destination. | Gemini in Google Maps | In-navigation Gemini can search for a place and, when supported, add it as a stop. |
| You want live traffic updates from the Gemini Apps connection. | Neither as a Gemini Apps feature | The Gemini Apps Maps connection does not provide live traffic updates; review the current route in Google Maps instead. |
Privacy and accuracy choices to make before relying on a route
Keep Activity is a functional requirement for the Gemini Apps place-and-directions connection, not merely an optional personalization setting. Device location is also optional: grant it when you want “near me” or current-position directions, or provide a named starting point instead.
For sensitive journeys, remember the documented boundaries: the Gemini Apps connection does not save location history and does not read saved places other than Home or Work. In Google Maps navigation, Gemini answers use the precise-location preferences of the signed-in account. Review those account and device settings before using voice assistance.
Finally, treat generated place summaries and route suggestions as assistance, not a guarantee. Open the Maps details, check the route shown on screen, and confirm time-sensitive facts such as opening hours before setting out.
