Google’s 2026 Pixel Watch guidance estimates 8–10 hours of continuous GPS use, while its Pixel Watch 5 estimates vary by case size and power mode. Music, cellular use and an always-on screen can also affect runtime. To judge whether a watch will last through your run, compare the conditions behind its battery figure with the settings you actually plan to use.
What a running-watch battery estimate tells you
Battery figures can describe very different kinds of use. A continuous-GPS estimate concerns a workout using location tracking; an all-day estimate describes a broader usage profile; and a battery-saving-mode estimate assumes some features are reduced or disabled. A watch that lasts multiple days in ordinary use may not last as long during a GPS workout, particularly if the run also uses music playback, cellular connectivity or frequent screen wake-ups.

Keep the model, case size, mode and test conditions attached to every number. For example, Google’s general Pixel Watch guidance puts continuous GPS use at 8–10 hours, but that estimate is not a universal figure for running watches. Google’s Pixel Watch 5 specifications distinguish the 41 mm and 45 mm models, and Apple’s Series 11 figures are based on a separate whole-device test. These manufacturer claims are useful for understanding a product’s stated capability, but they are not results from a controlled comparison between brands.
Actual runtime can vary with configuration, connectivity, signal strength and use. A specification is therefore a planning reference, not a guarantee that every individual run will consume the same amount of charge.

Published battery figures and what they measure
The figures below come from manufacturers’ published guidance and specifications available in 2026. They use different models and test descriptions, so read each row on its own rather than treating the table as a head-to-head ranking.
| Watch or guidance | Published runtime | Conditions and qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch continuous-GPS guidance | 8–10 hours | Google’s 2026 support guidance describes continuous GPS use. The estimate is not tied to a named watch generation and does not identify music playback as part of that particular GPS estimate. |
| Google Pixel Watch 5, 41 mm | Up to 30 hours with Always-on Display; up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode | Google’s 2026 specifications and support guidance. Google describes its maximum battery estimate as approximate, based on a median-user profile and testing in California in 2026 on pre-production hardware and software. |
| Google Pixel Watch 5, 45 mm | Up to 40 hours with Always-on Display; up to 72 hours in Battery Saver mode | Google’s 2026 specifications and support guidance, with the same approximate-estimate and test-profile qualifications described above. |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | Up to 24 hours in normal use; up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode | Apple’s UK technical specifications report testing conducted in July and August 2025 on pre-production watches with prerelease software. The normal-use test included a 60-minute workout with music played from the watch over Bluetooth. Apple says actual results vary by use, configuration, mobile network and signal strength. |
Apple’s Series 11 normal-use figure is not a continuous-GPS workout runtime: it is a whole-device test that includes a short workout and other use. Google’s 8–10-hour statement is specifically about continuous GPS, while the Pixel Watch 5 figures are maximum battery estimates for different operating conditions. Comparing these numbers as if they came from one test would obscure what each one measures.
Why GPS workouts use battery
A GPS workout repeatedly uses location tracking to record where and how far you run. How much power that requires depends on the watch’s design and settings. The sources cited here do not establish a universal GPS penalty, a standard sampling rate across watches or a percentage of battery consumed per hour. A manufacturer’s model-specific estimate is more useful than assuming every running watch has the same GPS runtime.

Some watches also offer a power mode that changes how often location or health readings are taken. Apple says that, on supported models, Low Power Mode can result in fewer GPS and heart-rate readings during outdoor walking, running or hiking sessions started in the Workout app. Apple says this adjustment can extend battery use during long workouts, but does not give a fixed percentage or number of additional hours. Reduced readings may change the detail or frequency of recorded data, so a longer-lasting mode may involve a workout-tracking trade-off.
Do not assume that a setting available on one brand or model exists, behaves identically or offers the same data on another. Check the watch’s own description of its workout and power modes if recording detail matters to you.
How music, the display and connectivity affect a run
Music playback
Google warns that streaming music can drain a Pixel Watch battery faster. Its Battery Saver example describes GPS workout use without music, so that example should not be taken as a promise of equal runtime during a music-supported run. Apple’s Series 11 normal-use test includes one 60-minute workout with music played from the watch over Bluetooth, but it does not isolate how much charge music alone uses.

If your watch supports it, downloading audio before you leave can avoid streaming during the run. That is a practical way to reduce reliance on a live connection, but the cited manufacturer guidance does not quantify the battery savings. Bluetooth headphones, the watch’s playback method and other active features can also make the actual result differ from an estimate that does not specify those details.

An always-on screen keeps the display available without requiring a wrist raise or tap, at the cost of battery life. Google says turning off Always-on Display extends battery life; Battery Saver turns it off while leaving tilt-to-wake enabled. Apple’s Low Power Mode also disables Always On Display. Neither manufacturer gives a universal number of hours saved by switching the feature off.
Google also suggests shortening screen timeout or disabling tilt-to-wake as possible battery-saving adjustments. These settings change how readily or how long the screen lights, not the GPS recording mode itself. If you rely on checking pace at a glance, consider whether the convenience of an always-visible display is worth its battery trade-off for the duration of your planned activity.

Cellular connectivity and signal
Using cellular connectivity, especially when signal conditions are poor, can affect runtime. Google recommends setting LTE watch Mobile mode to Automatic or Off if cellular use is draining charge; in Automatic mode, the watch uses cellular only when Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is unavailable. Apple likewise notes that network and signal strength affect actual Series 11 battery results and distinguishes GPS from GPS + Cellular configurations in its testing.
Leaving a phone behind or relying on a cellular connection may therefore change how long a watch lasts, but the cited guidance does not establish a fixed cellular penalty. Consider whether you need the watch’s cellular connection during a long run and check that model’s connectivity settings rather than applying a universal hours-per-run adjustment.
What battery-saving modes give up
Power-saving modes can extend use by reducing features, background work or the frequency of measurements. Their benefits are not free: they may affect what the watch records or when it communicates.

- Google Pixel Watch Battery Saver: Google says it disables Always-on Display, limits background activity and may delay notifications. Its stated longer-duration GPS workout example is without music.
- Apple Watch Low Power Mode: Apple says it disables Always On Display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. On supported outdoor workouts started in the Workout app, it can also reduce how often GPS and heart-rate readings are taken.
Choose a mode based on what you need from the session. If the priority is finishing a long run with a recorded route, reduced background features may be acceptable. If frequent heart-rate readings, immediate notifications or a continuously visible screen are important, check the mode’s effects before relying on it. The available guidance does not support a precise runtime gain for each feature removed.
How to estimate whether your watch will last for your run
- Find the figure that matches the activity. Look for continuous GPS runtime if the watch maker publishes one. Do not substitute an all-day-use estimate or a maximum battery figure from a saver mode.
- Match the exact model and size. Case size can correspond to different published estimates, as Google’s separate Pixel Watch 5 figures illustrate. Use the specification for the model you own or intend to use.
- List the features you will use during the workout. Include GPS settings, streamed or downloaded music, Bluetooth headphones, cellular use, Always-on Display, screen brightness and screen-wake behavior.
- Check what a longer-runtime mode changes. Review whether it disables the always-on screen, limits background activity, delays notifications or reduces GPS and heart-rate readings.
- Compare like with like, then leave a margin. Prefer a test or estimate with a similar duration and feature mix. Treat the result as approximate because manufacturers note that configuration, use and network conditions can affect actual runtime.
For comparisons between watches, write down the intended run and its settings before comparing numbers. A figure for a GPS-only workout is not equivalent to one that includes streamed music and cellular use; a power-saving estimate is not equivalent to an ordinary-use estimate. Apple and Google use different protocols in the cited materials, so those published numbers cannot establish which brand lasts longer under identical running conditions.
Practical choices for a longer run
Start with the features that matter least during the workout. If you can run without an always-on screen, turn it off or use a mode that disables it. If notifications can wait, a setting that limits background activity may help. Where supported and practical, use audio downloaded before the run rather than streaming. If cellular service is unnecessary, consider Automatic or Off for LTE Mobile mode on a Pixel Watch.
Each choice has a distinct trade-off: less convenient screen access, delayed notifications, no live music stream, or reduced cellular availability. If route tracking or heart-rate detail is essential, make sure the chosen battery mode still records the information you need. These adjustments can reduce demand, but the manufacturer guidance cited here does not quantify a guaranteed amount of extra runtime for any single change.
Quick Recap
Common battery-life misunderstandings
- “All running watches last 8–10 hours on GPS.” That is Google’s published continuous-GPS estimate in its Pixel Watch guidance, not a universal category figure.
- “A watch rated for several days will last several days with GPS on.” All-day or maximum-use estimates describe different conditions from a continuous-GPS workout.
- “Turning off Always-on Display adds a known number of hours.” Google and Apple confirm the direction of the effect through their guidance and modes, but the cited sources do not quantify a universal gain.
- “A music-inclusive battery test tells me music’s separate cost.” Apple’s test includes a workout with music, but it measures whole-device use rather than isolating music’s incremental drain.
- “The biggest number is the best comparison.” A maximum estimate, a saver-mode figure and an ordinary-use test can have different protocols, so the number only helps when its conditions fit your intended run.
