You can use Docker to keep an FFmpeg process sending a prerecorded video or generated scene to YouTube Live, and configure Docker to restart the container after certain exits. That is recovery, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream: the host, network, source file, stream key, FFmpeg command and YouTube ingest can each fail independently.
This guide walks through how to use Docker to run a continuous FFmpeg YouTube stream, from preparing media and credentials to choosing encoder settings, testing recovery and monitoring the live feed.

What this setup does—and what it cannot do
Docker runs FFmpeg in a container; FFmpeg reads and encodes your media, then sends it to YouTube’s ingest server. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground as the container’s main process so Docker can observe its exit and apply a restart policy.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA restart policy can recover from some process or container exits. It cannot repair a missing or corrupt source, an invalid stream key, a broken command, a host outage, insufficient upload capacity or a YouTube ingest problem. A restart also does not prove the stream successfully reconnected. Treat this as a recoverable single-host setup, not end-to-end high availability.

Prepare the host, media and YouTube stream
Choose an always-on Docker host
Use a computer or hosted runtime that can stay on for the planned broadcast and has Docker Engine installed. For a VPS or dedicated host, compare Docker support, sustained CPU or GPU capacity, outbound bandwidth and transfer limits, recovery controls, network path to YouTube ingest and total cost. No particular host specification is enough for every encode: measure the chosen machine under the actual workload.
Keep the source file outside the container
Put a known-good media file in a host directory, such as /srv/youtube-media/loop.mp4. Mount that directory read-only at /media; this makes the input accessible without allowing the container to modify it. Docker documents bind mounts and volumes in its volume documentation.
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/youtube-media,dst=/media,readonly
Get the ingest URL and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown there. Use the current URL and protocol presented for your stream rather than assuming a fixed endpoint.
- Keep the key private: it functions like a password for the encoder. Do not commit it to a public repository or paste it into a public command transcript. YouTube explains stream settings and key management in Manage live stream settings.
- If the key is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. Update the protected configuration used by the container afterward.
Set encoder values for YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the feed in transit to Google’s servers. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the live YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table for the combination you choose.

| Setting | How to choose it |
|---|---|
| Video codec and protocol | Match YouTube’s supported options and the current ingest details in Live Control Room. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted transport. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose a target your encoder can sustain and that suits the source. YouTube supports up to 60 fps; more pixels or frames require more encoding and upload capacity. |
| Bitrate | Use YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate, then verify that measured upstream capacity has practical headroom. As one specific example, the English YouTube Help table accessed 2026-10-03 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. These are recommendations, not a stability guarantee, and the table can change. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames is two seconds. |
| Audio | Use a supported audio codec and check that the chosen bitrate, sample format and channels match your material and encoder setup. |
Read YouTube’s table rather than treating the 1080p example as a universal bitrate. Raising resolution, frame rate or bitrate may improve image detail but also increases encoding load and network demand. Lower settings may fit a constrained host or link, at the cost of picture quality.
Run a looping FFmpeg command
For a local file, this illustrative command loops the input, paces file playback in real time and sends a 30 fps H.264/AAC stream in FLV format:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/loop.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-g 60 -r 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an example, not a tested universal preset or a claim that its bitrate is appropriate for every resolution or connection. It assumes the installed FFmpeg build includes libx264. Confirm the ingest URL format shown in Live Control Room and set bitrate and resolution using YouTube’s current guidance and a measurement of your available upload capacity. Keep actual credentials out of shared shell history and public configuration.

FFmpeg options and build capabilities vary. The project’s command-line documentation is regenerated nightly for the newest revision; check ffmpeg -version and local ffmpeg -h output when behavior differs. The protocol documentation describes HTTP input reconnect flags such as reconnect_at_eof and reconnect_streamed; those flags concern HTTP input, not a general RTMP output recovery switch.
Build and launch the container with a restart policy
The image must contain FFmpeg and run the command—or an equivalent script—as its foreground process. Use exec ffmpeg ... in a wrapper script so FFmpeg becomes PID 1 and its exit status reaches Docker. Keep the environment file private and restrict access. Environment variables can still be visible to privileged host administrators; use a suitable secret mechanism for your environment if required.
docker run -d --name youtube-ffmpeg
--restart unless-stopped
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/youtube-media,dst=/media,readonly
--env-file /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env
your-ffmpeg-image:tag
This launch shape assumes you have already built or obtained an image whose entrypoint executes the FFmpeg command and reads the configured variables. The example does not define that image or the contents and permissions of the environment file.

Choose the restart behavior deliberately
Docker’s unless-stopped policy restarts a container after it exits and after daemon restarts, unless an operator deliberately stopped it. always differs in how a manually stopped container behaves after a daemon restart. Docker documents these policies in Start containers automatically and recommends restart policies for ordinary container restart behavior rather than a separate host process manager. Policy activation occurs only after a container has been up successfully for at least 10 seconds.
Restart policies do not make a host outage harmless. Docker’s live restore documentation describes daemon behavior; keeping containers running through some daemon events does not remove host, network, source or ingest failure modes.
Test the complete stream and monitor it
- Before making the stream public, verify that the source file plays locally and that FFmpeg can read it from the mounted path.
- Start the container and check
docker psfor its state. Follow output withdocker logs -f youtube-ffmpeg; check restart count withdocker inspect -f '{{.RestartCount}}' youtube-ffmpeg. - In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming stream appears, watch stream health and messages, and check picture, audio and synchronization.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Verify the actual output bitrate against measured upstream capacity, with room for normal variation and other network use.
- Test the failure cases you can safely reproduce: source-file completion or failure, a network interruption, FFmpeg exit and a deliberate manual stop. Confirm which events restart the container and which require human intervention; do not describe an untested configuration as proven.
If you need YouTube to archive a broadcast, plan around YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume automatic archiving for a broadcast that exceeds that stated duration. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Container exits immediately | Bad command, missing encoder, missing file, malformed URL, or a script that does not pass the process exit status correctly. | Inspect docker logs youtube-ffmpeg; verify the file exists in the mounted path and the FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder. Make sure the entrypoint uses exec ffmpeg .... |
| Container does not restart after a failure | The policy may not have activated because the container did not stay up successfully for 10 seconds, or it may have been deliberately stopped under unless-stopped. |
Check the policy and container state, then test restart behavior with the same launch configuration. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong ingest URL or key, expired or reset credentials, unsupported output format, or network blockage. | Compare the configured URL and key with Live Control Room, verify the output settings and logs, and reset an exposed key before updating the protected configuration. |
| Stream stalls, drops frames or has unstable health | Upload capacity may be too low or variable; the host may not sustain the chosen encode; ingest connectivity may be interrupted. | Measure upstream capacity under realistic load, leave headroom, inspect CPU and encoder output, and select settings from YouTube’s current table that the host and link can sustain. |
| Video stops when the file ends | The looping option may be missing or the input may not be a valid loopable file. | Confirm -stream_loop -1 applies to the intended input and test the source in a short controlled run. |
| It reconnects poorly after YouTube drops the feed | A restart policy only acts when the FFmpeg process or container exits; an output connection may fail without the recovery behavior you expect. | Observe logs and stream health. If using a retry wrapper, prevent a busy loop and monitor its behavior; do not mistake HTTP input reconnect flags for RTMP output recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a Docker host, media mount and restart behavior is more operational work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; StreamNeo loops it in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
