An autosomal DNA test with relative matching can help you find biological parents, siblings, cousins, and other family members. The practical route is to review your closest matches, compare shared matches and family trees, investigate likely branches, and check your conclusions against records. A predicted relationship is a lead—not proof—and you can only match people who are in that service’s database and appear under its matching settings.
Choose a DNA test built for relative matching
For a broad search across both sides of your biological family, look for an autosomal DNA test with a relative-matching feature. Ancestry’s guide to finding biological family recommends starting with its DNA test and reviewing matches. FamilyTreeDNA describes its Family Finder autosomal test as a way to find matches in its database.

A match list is only as useful as the people represented in it: relatives need to have tested with that service, or have data supported there, and their settings must allow them to appear. No single provider can be called definitively best on the evidence available here; database participation, matching tools, privacy choices, and family-tree support are all relevant.

Prepare while your results are processing
Write down what you already know, including dates, places, surnames, and non-identifying details from adoption records or family documents. Start a family tree with confirmed information and clearly mark uncertainties. Ancestry likewise recommends recording known biological family information while waiting for results.

Keep source documents and notes organized. A tree is a working hypothesis, not a substitute for evidence, so distinguish what a document states from what you infer from it.
Read the closest matches first
Begin with the highest matches in the service’s list. For each, record the shared DNA in centimorgans (cM), the service’s predicted relationship and any alternatives it shows, available tree details, surnames, places, and known relatives.

Centimorgans describe the likelihood that a DNA segment will be inherited intact; they are not a measure of physical distance. Ancestry explains that, generally, more shared cM suggests a closer relationship, and that its match list shows both shared DNA and a predicted relationship. The prediction is not unique: different relationships can produce similar amounts because DNA is inherited through recombination. FamilyTreeDNA also cautions that distant relatives may fall below a service’s matching threshold. Therefore, a listed relationship is a possibility to investigate, and a missing person from the list does not disprove kinship.

Open the shared-match view for promising matches and look for groups who also match one another. Then compare any available trees for recurring people, surnames, and locations. Several matches pointing to the same family or place can suggest a branch or common ancestor worth investigating; a shared surname alone is not enough to establish a connection.

Autosomal DNA includes contributions from both biological parents, and a match list does not automatically label each person maternal or paternal. If a known biological relative is willing to test, comparing that person’s matches with yours can help assign a group to one side. FamilyTreeDNA describes its autosomal test as unable on its own to distinguish maternal from paternal matches; comparisons with tested relatives can help sort ancestral lines. Its Y-DNA and mtDNA tests trace narrower direct paternal and maternal lines, respectively, rather than replacing an autosomal search across the family.
Build the branch forward and verify the relationship
Once a likely shared ancestor or family branch emerges, research that line and trace children and grandchildren forward toward living generations. Family trees, obituaries, directories, and other records can help identify candidates, but each is a lead to check rather than stand-alone proof of a present-day relationship.

Use traditional records to test the specific relationship you are considering and connect historical ancestors to living people. FamilySearch’s introduction to DNA and genealogy discusses combining DNA and genealogy research. When possible, compare results from additional relatives, and look for agreement between the DNA evidence, documented family links, and the proposed branch.

Check privacy settings before matching or sharing
Before enabling relative matching, read the service’s current privacy and sharing controls. FamilyTreeDNA says matching is optional and that what matches can see depends on matching and tree-sharing choices. Its guide to information shared with matches lists possible match-visible details such as contact information, ancestral surnames, earliest known ancestors, trees, chromosome data, and selected ethnicity information.

Contact a possible relative with care
An unexpected DNA message can reveal information that affects more than the person receiving it. Ancestry’s help article advises: “Your message may come as a surprise, so it’s smart to be sensitive to the possible family dynamics.”
A first message can be brief: introduce yourself, say that you are researching biological family, explain why you think there may be a connection, and ask whether the person is open to discussing it. Do not demand a reply, personal details, or confirmation. Give them room to choose whether and when to respond.
When to seek help
If you have matches but cannot connect them to a branch, a genetic genealogist may be able to combine DNA evidence with traditional family research. Ancestry’s guide names its ProGenealogists service; check its current availability, scope, and terms directly before deciding whether it is suitable.
