Cron cannot replace the playlist an already-running FFmpeg process has opened. The predictable approach is to schedule a wrapper that stops the current FFmpeg process at a playlist boundary, then starts a new FFmpeg command with the next playlist. That restart may interrupt YouTube ingest, so test the transition and decide whether your broadcast can tolerate a reconnect.
What cron can—and cannot—switch
Cron is a calendar-based command launcher: it starts a command when the schedule matches. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a playlist file as an input and presents its listed files in sequence; the documented interface does not provide a cron-triggered hot-reload of a playlist that FFmpeg has already opened. Treat each scheduled change as a process transition: stop the old FFmpeg job, wait for it to exit, and launch a new one with the next list.

YouTube Studio and your local scheduler do different jobs. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then configure FFmpeg with the server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

A scheduled event can help promote the broadcast, but it does not tell your local machine which media list to select. Your wrapper or another local process must choose and start the correct FFmpeg input. Decide in advance whether a playlist change can cause a brief ingest interruption, whether the same Studio event should remain active, and what the expected recovery behavior is. The cited YouTube guidance does not settle how every reconnect will be handled for every event configuration.
Prepare compatible concat playlists
Make a separate concat-demuxer list for each scheduled block. The concat demuxer reads the files in sequence and adjusts timestamps so each follows the prior one. For reliable results, the files should have matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can cause timestamp gaps or artifacts; the concat demuxer’s duration directive can override a file’s stored duration when needed.

Use FFmpeg’s documentation for the exact list syntax, quoting, path escaping, and duration rules, since the right escaping depends on the paths you use: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. The FFmpeg documentation is rolling; if you run an older build, check documentation that matches that build rather than assuming every current option is available.

Set up the wrapper and transition
The wrapper should own the whole boundary operation: identify the intended block, prevent a duplicate run from starting a second encoder, stop the old process cleanly, wait for it to exit, and start FFmpeg with the new concat list and the YouTube ingest details. The following is an implementation checklist, not a tested, copy-paste script; process supervision and YouTube event continuity depend on your system design.
- Use explicit paths. Set absolute paths for the FFmpeg binary, playlist files, logs, and any PID or lock file. Cron’s environment is not the same as an interactive terminal.
- Make the transition idempotent. Check whether the intended playlist is already running before acting, and use a lock or equivalent process supervision so simultaneous invocations cannot overlap.
- Stop and wait. Send the existing FFmpeg process a clean termination request, then wait for it to exit before launching the next invocation. Define a timeout and a recovery path if it does not stop; do not start a second sender blindly.
- Launch the next input. Start FFmpeg using the new concat-demuxer list and the configured YouTube stream URL and key. Keep credentials out of public scripts, shared logs, and command examples that others can read.
- Record and verify. Log the selected playlist, start time, exit status, and errors without logging the stream key. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators after a change.
Schedule it with cron
On Linux Cronie, a user crontab has five time/date fields followed by a command, and the job runs as the owner of that crontab. Cron checks entries each minute. Its default shell is /bin/sh; HOME and LOGNAME are set from the account. Cronie’s crontab(5) describes the file as instructions to “run this command at this time on this date”: Linux man-pages: crontab(5).

Use your system’s crontab documentation for the exact implementation. On Cronie, CRON_TZ can set the schedule timezone, while log timestamps use the daemon’s local timezone. A local time lost to a daylight-saving change may not run; a repeated local time may run twice. If both day-of-month and day-of-week fields are restricted, either matching field can trigger the job. These details make locking and idempotence important for scheduled transitions.
Do not copy a single cron line without first deciding the operating system and cron implementation, schedule timezone, exact playlist boundaries, process supervisor, and how YouTube should handle encoder reconnects. Put the transition logic in the wrapper, use a schedule that matches your intended timezone, and test it around the actual boundary.

Configure and test the YouTube encoder
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio options, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Test with representative audio and motion before relying on a schedule. Confirm that the preview appears, audio is present, stream health is acceptable, and the new playlist starts as intended after a transition. YouTube’s setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that same archive guidance covers longer continuous broadcasts.
Choose between scheduled restarts and continuous switching

Compare the approaches on continuity at the boundary, implementation complexity, recovery from missed or duplicate jobs, and whether the same YouTube broadcast remains active. No universal transition behavior is established by the cited platform and tool documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The job works in a terminal but not from cron: cron may use a different shell and environment. Use absolute paths, ensure the crontab owner can read the lists and media, and send output to a log.
- The next playlist does not start: inspect the wrapper’s exit status and FFmpeg log. Confirm the previous process actually exited, paths are readable, and the concat list follows FFmpeg’s quoting and path rules.
- Two FFmpeg processes send at once: a repeated or simultaneous job may have launched another invocation. Add locking and an idempotent check, and verify process supervision before restarting.
- The schedule fires at an unexpected local time—or twice: check the cron implementation, schedule timezone, daylight-saving behavior, and whether both day-of-month and day-of-week fields can match.
- Audio, video, or timestamps break at a file boundary: compare stream codecs and time bases across the files, check duration metadata, and review the concat demuxer’s duration override and path syntax.
- YouTube preview or stream health is poor after a restart: verify the ingest URL and key, encoder settings, representative audio and motion, and the Live Control Room indicators. Re-test the chosen reconnect and event behavior rather than assuming the playlist change itself is seamless.
