Connect a controller to MaPC either by pairing it in System Settings > Bluetooth or by plugging it into a compatible USB port. Then open MaPC, check the Controllers tab, launch the Windows game, and confirm the game’s own control bindings. A DualSense, DualShock 4, and Backbone One PlayStation Edition can also be translated to the Xbox-style input expected by some Windows games.

MaPC is a public-beta native Mac app for Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later) running macOS 15 or later. It connects Steam, Epic Games, and GOG libraries and runs Windows games through compatibility software, so controller support ultimately depends on macOS, MaPC’s input layer, and the individual game.

What you need before connecting a gamepad

MaPC currently targets Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later. The app is free to download and play, but MaPC says to allow about 30 GB of free storage for its engine and games. It can offer to install Rosetta 2 during setup. Keep enough additional space for the Windows games you plan to install; the 30 GB figure is not a promise that every library will fit within that amount.

  • Supported Mac: Apple Silicon, M1 or newer.
  • Supported system: macOS 15 or later.
  • Storage: about 30 GB free for the engine and games, plus the space required by each title.
  • Game library: Steam, Epic Games, or GOG connected to MaPC.
  • Input device: a compatible Bluetooth or wired controller, or a keyboard and mouse.
  • Game settings: the title must actually support the input method and controller profile you choose.

MaPC’s terms make the important qualification clear: compatibility software can run many Windows games, but a particular game may need tweaks or may not run at all. A controller that works perfectly in macOS can still be ignored by a game with unusual input requirements, launcher restrictions, or anti-cheat technology.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Choose Bluetooth, wired, or keyboard input

There is no universal best controller connection. Bluetooth is convenient and avoids cable clutter. A wired connection removes pairing steps and is a useful diagnostic when wireless input is unreliable, although some Macs and controllers require a separately purchased USB adapter. A keyboard and mouse are the dependable fallback when a title does not recognize a gamepad or when its keyboard bindings are better documented.

Option Best for What you need Important limitation
Bluetooth controller Living-room play, a clean desk, and quick switching between devices A compatible controller with Bluetooth enabled Pairing can fail until an old pairing is removed or the controller is placed back into discovery mode
Wired controller Stable troubleshooting and sessions where you do not want to manage battery or pairing A data-capable USB cable and a matching Mac port; an adapter may be necessary The game must still support the controller profile
Keyboard and mouse Games designed around keyboard controls or a controller that is not detected The Mac’s built-in or external keyboard and mouse Bindings and modifier behavior vary by game
PlayStation-style controller DualShock 4, DualSense, or Backbone One PlayStation Edition hardware Bluetooth or wired connection, plus MaPC’s translation feature when needed Translation helps with Xbox-only games but does not guarantee compatibility with every title

MaPC does not publish a universal latency, frame-rate, or compatibility percentage for controllers. Choose based on the specific game’s support, the connector on your Mac, and the layout you can use comfortably rather than on an assumed performance ranking.

Pair a controller over Bluetooth

Apple’s Mac guidance supports both Bluetooth and wired game controllers. Use the controller maker’s instructions for the exact button combination that starts discovery mode; that combination differs among models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Charge or power on the controller. A low battery can interrupt pairing or cause the device to disappear while you are testing it.
  2. Enter discovery mode. Hold the controller’s pairing combination until its status light indicates that it is discoverable. If it was previously paired with another device, disconnect it there first.
  3. Open macOS Bluetooth settings. Choose the Apple menu, open System Settings, and select Bluetooth in the sidebar.
  4. Connect the controller. Find its name in the device list and click Connect. If macOS requests a confirmation or pairing code, accept it or enter the code shown on screen.
  5. Wait for the connected state. Do not launch the game until macOS shows the controller as connected. If it never appears, turn the controller off, repeat discovery mode, and scan the list again.
  6. Open MaPC. Start MaPC after macOS has established the connection. Open its Controllers tab and confirm that the device is listed before launching a game.
  7. Test in the game. Launch the title, open its controls or input menu, and check movement, face buttons, triggers, shoulder buttons, and menu navigation. Test a short session before committing to a long play session.

Pairing is a macOS operation, not a MaPC-specific one. If the controller is absent from macOS’s Bluetooth list, changing MaPC settings will not fix the underlying connection. Resolve the pairing first, then use MaPC’s Controllers tab to diagnose the game-facing input.

Connect a wired controller

Plug the controller directly into a compatible Mac port with a cable that carries data, not merely power. Macs and controllers use different connectors, so inspect both ends before buying a cable or adapter. Apple notes that some Mac-and-controller combinations require a USB adapter sold separately.

  1. Check the ports. Identify whether the Mac has the connector required by the controller or its cable.
  2. Attach the adapter if required. Use an adapter that matches the Mac port and supports USB data.
  3. Connect the controller. Plug it in firmly, then power it on if the model has a separate power button.
  4. Open MaPC’s Controllers tab. Confirm that macOS and MaPC see the device.
  5. Launch the game and inspect its input menu. Select the detected controller profile if the title presents a choice, then test every important control.

A wired connection is especially useful when Bluetooth pairing is unreliable. It does not bypass a game’s controller restrictions, however: a title can still reject the device, expose only part of its button set, or require a different profile.

Use PlayStation controllers in games expecting Xbox input

MaPC 1.0.5 added support for PlayStation-style controllers in games that only support Xbox controllers. The changelog specifically names DualShock 4, DualSense, and Backbone One PlayStation Edition. The translation switch in MaPC’s Controllers tab is on by default.

How the translation works

The feature presents PlayStation-style hardware through the Xbox-oriented input interface that some Windows games expect. The physical labels remain the same on the controller, but the game may display Xbox button prompts or interpret the corresponding inputs as Xbox controls.

What to do when an Xbox-only game still ignores it

  1. Confirm that the controller appears in macOS Bluetooth settings or as a wired device.
  2. Open MaPC’s Controllers tab and make sure the PlayStation-to-Xbox translation switch is enabled.
  3. Open the game’s input settings and select its controller option if one is available.
  4. Restart the game after changing the translation switch. Some titles detect controller profiles only during startup.
  5. Use the game’s reset-to-default binding command if only a few controls respond.

Translation is a compatibility aid, not a guarantee. Games can use proprietary input checks, show incorrect on-screen prompts, or support only a subset of controls. If the problem remains, record the game name, Mac model, macOS version, and MaPC log before contacting MaPC support. MaPC’s product information describes that diagnostic workflow; optional support is listed from $4.99.

Check MaPC before changing game settings

MaPC’s Controllers tab is the first checkpoint when a game does not respond. It tells you whether the app is receiving the device from macOS, which separates a connection problem from a game configuration problem.

If the controller is listed

Move the sticks and press several buttons while the game is closed, if the tab provides input indicators. Then launch the game and inspect its Controls, Input, or Controller menu. Select the detected profile, enable controller support if the title offers a toggle, and verify that the game has not switched to keyboard-only input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the controller is not listed

Return to macOS Bluetooth or the physical cable. For Bluetooth, repeat discovery mode and remove the old pairing before reconnecting. For wired hardware, test another port or cable and check whether an adapter is required. Do not treat a missing device in MaPC as a game-binding issue.

Use a keyboard and mouse when a gamepad is unavailable

A keyboard and mouse are the platform fallback for Mac games. Apple’s guidance expects games to support a predictable default keyboard-and-mouse interaction method, but each Windows title decides which keys it recognizes and whether rebinding is available.

  1. Open the game’s settings. Look for Controls, Keyboard, Input, or a similarly named page; labels vary by title.
  2. Confirm movement. Test the documented movement keys, crouch or sprint modifiers, and camera or pointer controls.
  3. Confirm actions. Test primary action, secondary action, jump, reload, interact, pause, and menu navigation.
  4. Review modifier combinations. Check keys that require Command, Option, Control, Shift, or a simultaneous mouse button, because these combinations may differ from macOS shortcuts.
  5. Rebind where possible. Keep high-frequency actions close to the movement cluster and avoid assigning two essential actions to the same key.
  6. Save and test in a safe area. Some games apply bindings only after you click Apply, leave the menu, or restart the title.

Do not assume that a controller’s button label maps to the same keyboard key in another game. If a title has no rebinding screen, use its documented defaults and keep a note of the controls that are easy to forget.

Build a reliable control setup

Match the layout to the game

Xbox-style and PlayStation-style controllers place their face-button labels differently. MaPC’s translation can make a PlayStation-style pad usable in an Xbox-only game, but the on-screen prompts may still show the translated labels. Read the prompt shown by the game rather than relying only on the printed symbol or letter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check reach and remapping

Stick placement, trigger travel, button reach, and the ability to remap controls affect comfort more than the connection method. For games with frequent simultaneous inputs, verify that the title allows custom bindings and that the complete button set is exposed. Apple describes controller hardware through standardized profiles, while individual games choose which controls they actually use.

  • Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
  • Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
  • Rumble vibration.
  • Support turbo function.

Keep one fallback ready

Leave the keyboard and mouse available even when a controller is your preferred method. It can let you navigate a launcher, enter text, or recover when a game starts in keyboard mode. A short test of both input methods before a long session also reveals whether the title switches profiles unexpectedly.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The controller does not appear in macOS

  • Put the controller back into discovery mode using the maker’s pairing instructions.
  • Remove the old Bluetooth pairing and reconnect it from System Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Power-cycle the controller and confirm that its battery is charged.
  • For wired hardware, inspect the cable, try another Mac port, and verify that any required USB adapter supports data.

macOS and MaPC see it, but the game does not

  • Open the game’s input or controller menu and select the available profile.
  • Check MaPC’s Controllers tab again and enable PlayStation-to-Xbox translation when applicable.
  • Close and relaunch the game after changing the profile or translation switch.
  • Check the title’s own documentation for controller support and rebinding limits.

Only some buttons work

  • Confirm that the game supports the controller profile rather than only a subset of inputs.
  • Use the game’s reset-to-default binding option, then test sticks, triggers, face buttons, shoulders, and menu controls individually.
  • Look for a separate toggle for controller support, gamepad mode, or combined keyboard/controller input.
  • If the title expects Xbox input, enable MaPC’s translation for a listed PlayStation-style controller.

The game will not launch

Input troubleshooting cannot fix a launch failure caused by the Windows game itself. MaPC says some games run without changes, some need tweaks, and some do not run. Games that use kernel-level anti-cheat cannot run on macOS through MaPC. Confirm that the title launches without the controller first; if it does not, investigate the compatibility limitation before changing bindings.

A DirectX 12 title fails or performs unexpectedly

MaPC describes DirectX 12 support as an experimental advanced option. It requires installing Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit separately and is not included in MaPC Pro. Treat this as a game-compatibility and graphics-runtime issue rather than a controller fault. Test the title with its supported graphics settings before drawing conclusions about input reliability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep MaPC and macOS current

The latest MaPC changelog entry identified here is MaPC 1.1.3 Beta, dated October 18, 2026. It includes Steam startup fixes and other beta changes. Beta software can change controller behavior, labels, and workarounds, so note the MaPC version whenever you troubleshoot and recheck the Controllers tab after an update.

When reporting a persistent issue, include the exact game, Mac model, macOS version, MaPC version, connection method, controller model, whether the device appears in the Controllers tab, and the MaPC log. That information distinguishes Bluetooth pairing failures, profile translation problems, game-specific bindings, and broader compatibility issues.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Verify an Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 15 or later, and roughly 30 GB of free space for MaPC’s engine and games.
  2. Install or accept Rosetta 2 if MaPC offers it during setup.
  3. Connect the controller through System Settings > Bluetooth or a compatible wired port.
  4. Open MaPC’s Controllers tab and confirm that macOS exposes the device.
  5. Enable PlayStation-to-Xbox translation for a DualShock 4, DualSense, or Backbone One PlayStation Edition when the game expects Xbox input.
  6. Launch the game, open its own control settings, and test every essential input before starting a long session.
  7. If the controller is unavailable, configure and test the game’s keyboard-and-mouse bindings.
  8. For failures, identify whether the device is missing from macOS, missing from MaPC, or rejected only by the game; each stage requires a different fix.
