ChatGPT can help you generate business-idea hypotheses, plan research, analyze customer feedback, and check basic economics. It cannot prove that customers want an idea or that the business will be profitable. Treat its suggestions as starting points, verify claims against dated sources, test real customer behavior, and check the numbers against your own evidence before investing.
What ChatGPT can—and cannot—tell you
ChatGPT is most useful as a thinking and organizing tool. It can help you clarify a customer problem, generate options that fit your skills and constraints, draft research questions, summarize information you provide, and lay out financial assumptions. OpenAI describes these uses in its OpenAI Academy materials and its resources on business uses of ChatGPT.

A fluent answer is not evidence of demand. An idea that sounds plausible, a competitor list, a market-size estimate, or a financial scenario generated by ChatGPT does not establish that people will buy. OpenAI Academy’s workshop puts the limitation succinctly: “A polished answer is still a draft to evaluate.”

OpenAI reported that at least four million people in the United States used ChatGPT during March 2026 to help plan, start, run, or grow a business. In the same May 25, 2026 article, it classified approximately 29 percent of those entrepreneurial users as prospective entrepreneurs and 71 percent as active entrepreneurs. These are OpenAI’s usage estimates, not independently established counts of successful businesses or evidence that ChatGPT improves business outcomes. Read OpenAI’s report.
Start with your constraints, not a request for “the best idea”
A useful prompt gives ChatGPT a goal, context, requested output, and boundaries. OpenAI Academy recommends that structure and advises users to ask for missing information and retain responsibility for the final decision. Before asking for ideas, state your skills, available time, startup budget, location or target market, risk tolerance, interests, and practical constraints. If a key detail is missing, have ChatGPT ask questions before it brainstorms.
For example, adapt this prompt:
I want to find a business idea that fits my experience, available time, and startup budget. My skills are [skills], my budget is [amount], my location or intended market is [market], and I can spend [hours] per week. First ask up to three questions if key context is missing. Then suggest eight ideas, each with a target customer, a problem hypothesis, why my background may fit, assumptions that need checking, and one low-cost way to test interest. Flag unsupported claims. Do not describe any idea as profitable without evidence.
The goal is not to get ChatGPT to announce a winner. It is to get a manageable set of hypotheses that you can investigate.

Shortlist ideas using decision axes rather than treating an AI-generated score as a measurement. Ask how clearly each idea identifies a customer and problem; how frequent or urgent the problem may be; what alternatives customers use now; how easily you can reach likely buyers; and what evidence of actual behavior you have. Also consider founder fit, feasibility within your constraints, likely price and cost assumptions, the cost and time required for a test, and the biggest unresolved uncertainty.

These axes are a practical comparison framework, not a validated scoring model. If you ask ChatGPT to score candidates, request its reasoning and the evidence behind each judgment. A precise-looking score is not meaningful when its inputs are guesses. Prefer a comparison that identifies what is known, what is inferred, and what you still need to learn.
Research the market and competitors with traceable sources
Turn a promising candidate into specific research questions: Who buys? What event or problem prompts a purchase? What do customers use instead? How do direct competitors describe and price their offers? What evidence would weaken the idea? ChatGPT can help structure a broad question into smaller ones and synthesize material with citations; OpenAI’s research guidance and Market Research with ChatGPT resource describe these research uses.
Ask for a source, publication date, and geography for each important claim, then open the source yourself. A citation is a lead to inspect, not a guarantee that the page supports the claim. Keep sourced facts separate from ChatGPT’s interpretations and your assumptions; note when sources conflict or leave a gap.

Try this prompt:
Research [idea] for [customer segment] in [geography]. Prioritize original and authoritative sources. For each important claim give the source, date, geography, and what it does and does not prove. Compare direct competitors and substitutes on customer, offer, publicly stated price, and evidence of demand. Separate sourced facts from inference and assumptions. End with the three most important unanswered questions. Do not invent market-size figures.
Do not accept a market-size number just because it appears in a polished report. Check its definition, geography, year, method, and original publisher. If you cannot trace those details, do not use the number as established market evidence.
Test customer behavior, not compliments
ChatGPT can draft an interview guide, survey, landing-page copy, prototype description, or test plan. You must collect the responses and behavioral data. Ask prospective customers about the last time they faced the problem, what they did, what it cost them, and which alternatives they considered. These questions are more informative than asking whether they like your idea, which can invite politeness rather than evidence.
Use a test that fits the business and is appropriate and lawful: for example, ask someone to book an appointment, join a pilot, place a preorder, or pay for a trial. A concrete action can be more informative than stated interest, but no one test guarantees demand. Choose what to test based on the customer, offer, cost, and risk involved.

Prompt for a neutral interview guide:
Draft a short, non-leading interview guide for people who [customer description]. Ask about the last time they faced [problem], what they did, what it cost them, and what alternatives they considered. Do not pitch my solution or assume they want it. Add a separate section listing what evidence would support or weaken my idea.
When you analyze interview notes or test results, remove personal information where possible and provide anonymized notes or aggregate data. Ask ChatGPT to identify recurring patterns, contradictory cases, and limitations—not to claim that a small or self-selected group represents the whole market. Check the inputs first for missing values, duplicates, inconsistencies, and unusual entries. OpenAI Academy’s workshop recommends inspecting data quality before drawing conclusions and supporting patterns with numbers and representative feedback.

Build an assumption sheet before asking ChatGPT to calculate. Include price per sale, expected sales volume, direct cost per sale, fixed monthly costs, one-time startup costs, and relevant labor or customer-acquisition costs. Add a source or explanation for each input; if you do not have one, label it as an assumption.
You can ask ChatGPT to organize the calculations, show formulas, flag missing costs, and compare scenarios. For example:

Show each formula, flag missing costs, and label every output as an estimate based on my assumptions. Do not claim this is a forecast or that the business is profitable. Tell me which real-world data would most change the result.
For a simple model, gross margin per sale is selling price minus direct cost per sale. A rough break-even sales count is fixed costs divided by gross margin per sale, provided that margin is positive and the calculation accounts for the costs relevant to your business. Treat a result as a scenario, not a forecast: it depends on the assumptions you entered and may omit costs or operational limits. Recalculate important figures independently and verify the inputs before making a financial commitment. OpenAI’s materials support using ChatGPT to analyze supplied business data, not establishing the data or proving profitability.
Make a decision—and define what could change it
Before committing substantial time or money, write down the evidence in three groups:
- Supported: claims backed by sources you checked or behavior you directly observed.
- Still assumed: uncertain points such as willingness to pay, repeat purchases, acquisition cost, or delivery costs.
- Decision-changing evidence: the result of a test or new information that would make you proceed, revise the audience or offer, or stop.
Then choose the next step: run a larger test, revise the offer or customer segment, or stop pursuing the idea. Keep that decision with the founder. Trace important claims to sources, distinguish facts from assumptions, and check names, dates, prices, policies, and promises before relying on them.
