Home insurance is designed to cover specified financial losses, such as insured damage to a building or belongings. Home assistance—also called home emergency cover—is designed to arrange or help pay for urgent repairs when a defined household emergency occurs. It does not automatically replace buildings or contents insurance, and the exact cover depends on your policy and country.
How home insurance and home assistance differ
| Question | Home insurance | Home assistance / home emergency cover |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Financial protection for covered damage or loss, and possibly liability claims and additional living costs, depending on the policy. NAIC | Arrange or contribute to urgent repair work for emergencies defined in the contract. Allianz Ireland and OUTsurance Ireland |
| Typical trigger | Damage or loss caused by a covered peril or event, as defined by the policy. NAIC | A sudden event listed in the assistance terms that requires urgent action. Allianz Ireland and OUTsurance Ireland |
| Typical scope | May include the dwelling, other structures, personal property, liability and loss of use; included categories vary by policy. NAIC | May cover a tradesperson’s callout, labour and materials within stated limits. Some contracts also provide temporary accommodation or storage. Allianz Ireland |
| Limits and conditions | May include sums insured, sublimits, deductibles or excesses, covered-peril tests and exclusions. NAIC and Moneysmart | May include a maximum payment per incident, limits on callouts, qualifying-event definitions, exclusions and a requirement to obtain authorization first. Allianz Ireland and OUTsurance Ireland |
| What it does not automatically cover | Every possible event: maintenance is not covered, and risks such as flood or earthquake may need specific cover, depending on the country and policy. NAIC and Financial Consumer Agency of Canada | General upkeep or the full cost of every repair; it is not automatically a substitute for buildings or contents cover. Allianz Ireland and OUTsurance Ireland |
What home insurance may cover
In the United States, a typical homeowners policy may cover the dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability and medical payments. These are U.S. policy categories, not a universal package; the specific policy controls what is insured, against which perils, and up to what limits. The NAIC overview explains these components.

Maintenance is a separate issue from sudden insured damage. Canadian federal consumer guidance says home insurance does not cover maintenance and may not cover damage caused by a lack of maintenance. How a particular sudden incident is treated depends on the policy wording. Flood and earthquake cover also varies: a separate policy or optional cover may be needed. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada discusses these qualifications.

Home assistance generally responds to a defined urgent problem rather than providing broad protection for the house and its contents. Depending on the contract, qualifying examples may include a sudden plumbing leak, an internal electrical fault, lost keys or damaged locks, unsafe broken external glass, roof damage that makes the home unsafe, or failure of the main heating or hot-water system. These are examples found in Irish insurer documents, not a universal list.

Assistance may pay for a callout and urgent work to make the property safe or limit further damage. Whether it also covers a permanent repair, resulting damage, temporary accommodation or storage depends on the terms and limits. Some assistance contracts are insurance products with a service element; in the UK, the FCA uses “home emergency” as a regulatory category. FCA information on home emergency is specific to UK regulation, not a global definition.
How the two can apply to one incident
Suppose a pipe suddenly fails. An assistance benefit might arrange a tradesperson to stop the leak or make the plumbing safe, if the event qualifies and the provider authorizes the callout. The home insurance policy may separately assess damage to the building or belongings caused by the water. One benefit does not guarantee that the other will pay: each has its own trigger, exclusions, limits and claims process.

Check whether the assistance provider must approve the work before you hire someone. For a loss that has already happened, follow the notification and evidence requirements in the current contracts and contact the insurer or assistance helpline. Do not assume that an emergency repair benefit covers resulting damage, or that the main policy covers the repair itself.

Assistance terms vary even within one country. The following figures describe particular Irish policy editions, not typical market limits or current terms for every customer.
Rank #3
| Policy wording | Stated assistance limit | Other stated terms |
|---|---|---|
| Allianz Ireland household policy document dated 8 January 2024. Policy document | Up to €300 per incident. | Up to four callouts in an insurance period; prior helpline authorization required. The wording says, “This section is separate to your home insurance policy.” |
| OUTsurance Ireland home policy booklet, March 2026. Policy document | Up to €300 including VAT per home emergency. | No more than two callouts in a policy year; notice and authorization required. The wording says the benefit “does not replace” buildings cover. |
The Allianz wording lists sudden plumbing problems, blocked drains or toilet waste pipes, internal electrical faults, lost keys or damaged external locks, unsafe broken outside glass, unsafe roof damage, and complete failure of primary heating or hot water. Its exclusions include wear and tear, some external or shared installations, appliances, and unmaintained heating systems. The OUTsurance booklet lists sudden plumbing, electrical-supply, security, roof or glass, and primary heating or hot-water emergencies. Read the edition supplied with your own policy rather than applying either example’s figures or event list to another contract.

For home insurance
Compare policies at the same level of cover. Moneysmart advises checking the premium, excess, exclusions and special conditions, liability protection, extended cover above the sum insured, and claim limits; consult the policy disclosure documents for the full terms. Moneysmart’s comparison guidance is Australian guidance, so local terminology and rules may differ.

For home assistance
- Check whether assistance is included, sold as an optional add-on, or offered separately.
- Find the exact qualifying emergencies and any test such as whether the home must be unsafe, insecure or at risk of further damage.
- Check the payment cap per event, callout limit, and any excess or charges you may have to pay.
- Confirm whether you must contact the provider and get approval before arranging a tradesperson.
- Determine whether the benefit covers only urgent work to make the property safe, or also a permanent repair and resulting damage.
- Read exclusions for wear, gradual leaks, maintenance, appliances, shared drains and unmaintained equipment.
- Check any accommodation or storage benefit, including limits per person and in total.
- Verify eligibility by country, property type, occupancy and policy period.
For both
Use the policy schedule and full wording, not just a marketing summary. Labels such as “home insurance” and “home emergency cover” do not establish whether a specific incident is covered; the contract’s conditions and limits do.
