To use ChatGPT with an image, attach it to a conversation, then ask a specific question or request a description. To compare images, attach them together and name the details you want compared. You can upload still images on web and mobile, subject to account, plan, workspace, and usage limits.
How to add an image to ChatGPT
- Open a ChatGPT conversation on the web or in the iOS or Android app.
- Select the plus icon, then choose Add photos & files. You can also drag an image into the text area or paste one from your clipboard.
- After the image is attached, write what you want ChatGPT to do and send the message.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ describes the feature as a way to understand and interpret images added to conversations. Its file upload guidance also describes asking questions, extracting content, and interpreting diagrams, screenshots, and charts.

What to ask ChatGPT about an image
Use ordinary language and make the task clear. For example, ask it to describe the scene, identify an object, explain a visible element, or read information from a screenshot. If you need a particular kind of answer, say so: request a concise description, a list of visible items, or an explanation of a specific part of the image.

How to compare two or more images
Attach the images and state the dimensions that matter for your decision. For example:
Compare these two room layouts for visible differences in furniture placement, lighting, and obstacles. List only what you can see, and mark uncertain points.

Depending on the task, useful comparison dimensions include visible objects or text, whether something is present or absent, relative placement, color, or apparent condition. Ask ChatGPT to distinguish direct observations from uncertainty; that is a prompting aid, not a guarantee that the comparison is correct. OpenAI’s documentation supports discussing multiple images and comparing information, but it does not establish a universal comparison rubric.

OpenAI’s FAQ lists PNG, JPEG (.jpeg or .jpg), and non-animated GIF as supported image types. It states a maximum size of 20 MB per image. There is no fixed universal number of images per prompt in the FAQ: the number depends on image size and accompanying text. If an upload fails, try fewer or smaller images.

Image inputs are listed as available on Free and paid ChatGPT plans and on web and iOS/Android, but actual access and usage limits can depend on your plan, account settings, workspace settings, region, client version, and selected model. If the upload option is missing, check the current interface and account or workspace settings rather than assuming the feature is available identically to every user.
Where image analysis can be unreliable
OpenAI cautions that image interpretations can be incorrect, especially when the image is unclear or ambiguous. Treat the answer as a useful first pass, not as proof of what the image contains. Check the source image yourself when a detail matters.

- Text and orientation: Rotated or upside-down images and text-heavy images can be misread. Enlarge text while keeping enough surrounding context to interpret it; performance with non-Latin alphabets such as Japanese or Korean may be weaker.
- Charts: Graphs that distinguish series using colors or line styles can be difficult to interpret.
- Position and counts: Precise spatial localization, such as identifying an exact chess position, is difficult, and object counts may be approximate.
- Unusual perspectives: Panoramic and fisheye images can be hard to analyze.
- Image detail and metadata: Images are resized before analysis, which can affect original dimensions. Original file names and metadata are not processed.
- Medical imagery: The feature is not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images such as CT scans and should not be used for medical advice.
Privacy: check data controls before uploading
OpenAI says content on eligible individual services may be used to improve models, and provides settings that control whether new conversations are included. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want new conversations used to train OpenAI models. The Data controls FAQ says that when this setting is off, new conversations are not used for training.
