How Much Storage Do Handheld Games Need?

Handheld storage needs depend on the games you keep installed, system-reserved space, and card compatibility. Compare Switch 2 and Steam Deck storage options.

There is no single storage amount that fits every handheld game library. The right capacity depends on your device, the space it reserves for its system, the storage requirements of the games you want installed, and whether you want a large library available offline. Check each game’s requirement, then compare the total with the usable space on your handheld—not just its advertised capacity.

How much storage should you plan for?

Start with the games you want installed at the same time. Look up each title’s required storage space on its official product page or packaging, add those requirements together, and leave room for system-reserved space and updates. This gives you a more useful estimate than relying on a supposed “average” game size: the official specifications below do not establish a representative range of handheld game installation sizes.

  • How many games stay installed? A small rotation, with completed downloads removed, calls for less local space than a large library kept ready to play.
  • Do you need offline access? If you want to launch games without downloading them again, keep their required data on the device or compatible expansion storage.
  • Will you install large downloads, updates, or downloadable content? Account for those alongside the game itself rather than treating the box or cartridge as a guarantee that no additional space is needed.

Use the game’s stated requirement as the starting point, not a promise that every future update will fit within that figure. The available official guidance does not provide a universal add-on amount for updates, so avoid applying an unsupported buffer formula.

Storage on Nintendo Switch 2

Internal capacity and expansion

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2, with a portion reserved for system use. That means the full 256 GB is not available for games, and Nintendo’s cited guidance does not establish one fixed usable-space figure for every system state. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications identify the capacity; its storage FAQ explains that some space is reserved.

To expand game storage, Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards only, up to 2 TB. An ordinary microSD card used with the original Switch cannot store or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. Nintendo says those older cards can be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original console. A system update over the internet is required the first time you use a microSD Express card. See Nintendo’s microSD Express compatibility guidance before buying a card.

What goes on the card, and where saves stay

Switch 2 expansion storage can hold downloaded software, game updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and video captures. Game save data stays in the system memory whether you play from a game card or downloaded software; deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data, according to Nintendo’s storage FAQ.

Nintendo’s FAQ stated, when checked on October 7, 2026, that no individual Switch 2 games require additional storage to play. That is a time-sensitive support statement, not a guarantee about future releases or updates.

Physical games may still use internal or card storage

A game-key card is not a cartridge containing the full game data: it acts as a key to download that data over the internet. If you are choosing a physical release to avoid a large download, check what kind of card it is and the title’s requirement first. Nintendo Switch 2 Support directs players to the “Required Storage Space” section on the official software page or the front of the game packaging for each title’s storage requirement. Nintendo also explains game-key cards.

How Steam Deck storage compares

Valve lists Steam Deck configurations with 64 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of internal storage; each has a high-speed microSD card slot supporting SD, SDXC, and SDHC cards. Valve notes that specifications may change. The available specifications do not establish a single ideal capacity or a representative range of game sizes, so check the requirements for the games you intend to keep installed. See Valve’s Steam Deck specifications.

Do you need an expansion card?

Consider an expansion card if your chosen handheld supports one and the games you want to keep installed will not comfortably fit in its available internal space. It is optional if your installed library fits and you are willing to remove downloads when you finish them. The card type matters: a standard microSD card is not a substitute for microSD Express when storing Switch 2 games.

  1. Identify your exact handheld. Storage formats and card compatibility differ between devices.
  2. List the titles you want available at once. Use each title’s official storage requirement; include relevant updates and downloadable content where their requirements are provided.
  3. Account for space you cannot use for games. For Switch 2, Nintendo says some of the 256 GB internal capacity is reserved for system use.
  4. Choose compatible expansion only if needed. For Switch 2, that means microSD Express; Steam Deck has a microSD slot with SD, SDXC, and SDHC support.
  5. Recheck requirements before a large download. A physical copy, especially a game-key card, does not necessarily contain all game data.
