You can use ChatGPT on an iPhone without enabling Apple Intelligence: install and open the standalone ChatGPT app, or use ChatGPT in a browser. Apple Intelligence is only needed for Apple’s system-level ChatGPT integration, such as Siri handoff and Writing Tools.
Use the standalone ChatGPT app
- Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for ChatGPT.
- Check that the app’s developer is OpenAI OpCo, LLC, then install it. The US App Store listing currently marks it free with in-app purchases and requires iOS 18.0 or later; requirements and availability may differ in other storefronts. These listing details were checked on October 4, 2026.
- Open ChatGPT and follow the options presented in the app. You can use the app directly; signing in provides account-linked behavior, and access to particular features may depend on OpenAI’s current terms and plan.
That is all you need to chat in ChatGPT itself. You do not need to switch on Apple Intelligence or configure its ChatGPT extension.

Use ChatGPT in a browser instead
If you would rather not install the app, open ChatGPT in your iPhone browser and sign in if you want account-linked features. This route also does not require Apple Intelligence. Browser screens and feature availability can vary, so use the options currently shown by ChatGPT.
What Apple Intelligence adds
Apple’s ChatGPT extension lets Apple features call ChatGPT. Apple documents integration with Siri, Writing Tools, and visual intelligence; these are different from opening the ChatGPT app directly. To set up the extension on iOS 26, Apple’s documented path is Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT > Set Up. Labels may vary by iOS version or region. Installing the ChatGPT app does not by itself enable those Apple system entry points.

Fix common setup problems
The app will not install
Check the iOS requirement on the ChatGPT listing in your own App Store storefront. The US listing currently states iOS 18.0 or later; a different region or a later listing update may show different details. If the official listing is unavailable, check your storefront and region rather than installing a third-party copy.

ChatGPT is missing from Apple Intelligence settings
This affects the Apple Intelligence extension, not the standalone app. OpenAI advises checking that Siri and the iPhone are set to the same supported language. Apple also documents separate device, software, storage, language, and regional requirements for Apple Intelligence; those requirements apply to system integration, not as evidence that the standalone ChatGPT app needs Apple Intelligence. Confirm that Apple Intelligence is available and configured on your iPhone, then check that the ChatGPT extension has been set up. Having the standalone app installed is not the same as enabling the extension.

Account and privacy: keep the two routes distinct
For Apple’s extension, Apple says you choose what content to send; requests and attachments, along with limited contextual data, are sent to ChatGPT. Apple says the IP address is obscured, while general location is provided for fraud prevention and legal compliance. Extension conversations can be saved to ChatGPT history when you are signed in; OpenAI says signing in is needed to save them. These details describe the Apple Intelligence extension, not the standalone app. They should not be assumed to describe the app’s privacy controls or account requirements.
