Then treat the response as a draft: use follow-up prompts to correct gaps or change direction, and save preferences that apply across conversations in custom instructions. Clearer prompts help ChatGPT understand your request, but they do not guarantee that its answer is correct.
How to write a useful first prompt
A practical prompt usually combines four things: the task, relevant context, the result you want, and any important constraints or format. This is a flexible checklist, not a formula that guarantees a good response. OpenAI advises users to make prompts clear and specific and include enough context for the model to understand the request. Its guidance also recommends identifying the task, context, and preferred tone or style.

- Task: What do you want ChatGPT to do?
- Context: What background, audience, or situation should shape the answer?
- Desired result: What should the response help you accomplish?
- Constraints or format: Are there limits, priorities, or a format such as a checklist, table, or short explanation?
For example: “Help me prepare for [task]. Context: [relevant background]. Focus on [priorities]. Give me [format and level of detail] for [audience]. If anything important is missing, ask me before drafting.” Replace the brackets with details that matter to your task.
You do not need to include every element in every prompt. A short request may be enough for a straightforward task. For work with several requirements, name the constraints that could change the result—such as the audience, budget, or desired level of detail. OpenAI’s API-oriented prompting guide also recommends being specific about context, outcome, length, format, and style; those suggestions can help ChatGPT users too, although they are not instructions for a ChatGPT settings screen.

How to improve an answer with follow-ups
Rather than restarting when an answer misses the mark, point to what should stay, what needs to change, and what is missing. ChatGPT can use the earlier turns in the same chat as context. OpenAI recommends follow-up prompts and breaking complex workflows into separate tasks when that is useful.
- “Keep the structure, but make the explanation suitable for a beginner.”
- “You missed the budget constraint. Revise the options to stay under [amount].”
- “Give me two alternatives and explain the trade-off between them.”
For a larger piece of work, divide the request into manageable stages—for example, ask for an outline, review it, then request a draft with specific changes. A focused follow-up gives ChatGPT a clearer direction than a vague instruction such as “make it better.” These examples are ways to apply iterative prompting, not guarantees about the result.

What belongs in custom instructions
Custom instructions are for preferences you want ChatGPT to consider across chats, rather than requirements that apply only to one task. Useful examples include your preferred response length, tone, reading level, or formatting. Put a one-time constraint—such as the audience for a particular email—in that prompt instead of making it a lasting default.

| Method | What it does | Scope | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt | Sets the task and the relevant context or requirements. | The current request | Giving ChatGPT the information and output expectations it needs for a new task. |
| Follow-up | Refines, corrects, or extends an answer using the conversation so far. | The current conversation | Addressing a missed constraint, changing the level of detail, or developing a complex task in stages. |
| Custom instructions | Expresses preferences ChatGPT should consider in its responses. | Across chats, while enabled | Applying a stable preference such as concise answers or beginner-friendly explanations. |
The distinction is persistence: use a prompt for a task, a follow-up to steer the current conversation, and custom instructions for preferences you want to carry across chats.
Review the answer before relying on it
Good instructions can make your request clearer, but they cannot ensure that every response is accurate. OpenAI cautions that the model may not always produce correct information and advises users to review its output. Check important claims against reliable sources, and correct or ask about anything that seems incomplete or wrong.
