To connect a new monitor, match a video output on your computer to an input on the monitor, connect the monitor to power, then select the right input and display mode. If the connectors differ, you may need a compatible adapter. Once the picture appears, choose whether to duplicate your screen or extend your desktop in your computer’s display settings.
1. Match the computer’s video port to the monitor
Look at the ports on both devices and identify a video output on the laptop or desktop and a matching input on the monitor. Common connections include HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA, and USB-C. If the ports differ, use an adapter designed to connect the computer’s output to the monitor’s input. Check the port and accessory specifications before buying: a connector that fits does not guarantee that it supports the resolution, refresh rate, or display setup you want. See Google’s Chromebook display guidance and Microsoft’s Windows monitor instructions.

Check USB-C video support
USB-C describes the connector, not necessarily its capabilities. The computer’s USB-C port, the display, and the cable must support a video connection; a cable may also lack the capability needed for a display or dock. Check the specifications for your exact computer, cable, adapter, or dock before relying on USB-C for video. See Microsoft’s external-display guidance and Google’s cable guidance.

- Connect the monitor to power and switch it on.
- Connect the video cable to the computer and monitor, adding a compatible adapter if needed.
- If the monitor stays blank, use its Input or Source control to select the port you connected, such as HDMI or DisplayPort.

3. Choose whether to duplicate or extend the screen
Duplicating (also called mirroring) shows the same content on both displays. Extending adds space to the desktop, so you can move windows between screens.
Windows
Press Windows key + P, then select Duplicate, Extend, PC screen only, or Second screen only. For display detection and layout, open Settings > System > Display. Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; its display instructions still describe these controls, but Windows 10 is no longer supported.

Mac
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays to configure the connected display. A properly connected monitor should be detected automatically. The number of external displays a Mac supports depends on its model and the resolution and refresh rate in use; check the specifications for your Mac. Some options for a non-Apple display may be available only through the monitor’s own controls. See Apple’s display setup instructions.

4. Arrange the displays and set a supported mode
In your operating system’s display settings, arrange the on-screen display rectangles to match where the screens sit on your desk. Then select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the computer, monitor, cable, and any adapter or dock in the connection. If you cannot select a desired setting, check the specifications of every part of the connection; the available options depend on the complete setup, not just the monitor.
If the monitor says “No signal” or stays blank
- Confirm the monitor is plugged into power and switched on.
- Check that its selected Input or Source matches the port used for the cable.
- Reseat the cable and adapter at both ends. Confirm the adapter supports the direction and types of video connection involved.
- If you are using USB-C, verify that the computer port supports video and that the cable is capable of carrying the display signal.
- Open the computer’s display settings and use its available detection or display-selection controls.
- If the picture works but resolution or refresh rate is limited, check the capabilities of the computer, monitor, cable, adapter, or dock and choose a supported setting.
- If you are connecting more than one external display, check the computer’s supported display count for the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
Direct cable, adapter, hub, or dock?
A direct cable is the simplest option when the computer and monitor have matching ports. An adapter can bridge different connector types, but it must support the computer’s output, the monitor’s input, and the display mode you need. A hub or dock makes sense when you need additional ports or multiple display connections; confirm that it supports your specific computer and intended monitor configuration. No single USB-C cable or dock works for every computer and monitor.
