A Bluetooth beacon can help a marketing app recognize that a phone is near a shop aisle, museum exhibit, or other place. It does not send an advertisement directly to every nearby phone: a compatible app or service must detect the beacon, interpret its identifier, and decide what to show. The best deployments use that proximity cue to make a visitor’s next task easier—not simply to push another notification.
What a Bluetooth beacon does—and what it does not do
A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon is a small transmitter that repeatedly broadcasts an identifier. A nearby compatible device can detect the signal. An app or service then matches the identifier to a location or object and chooses a response, such as displaying exhibit details or relevant product information. The beacon supplies a proximity cue; it is not an advertising screen or a complete marketing system.

As Google’s 2015 explanation of BLE beacons puts it, “By design, a beacon is meant to be discoverable by any nearby Bluetooth Smart device, via its identifier which is a public signal.” Discoverability does not mean that every phone will automatically display a promotion. The receiving device needs compatible software and the relevant permissions or service support.
How a beacon-triggered experience works
- A beacon broadcasts an identifier. The signal repeats and can be detected by compatible nearby devices.
- Software recognizes the identifier. An app or supported operating-system feature matches it to a configured region, location, or object.
- The app selects an action. It can show useful information, offer a relevant next step, or take no action. The content and decision logic live in the software or service, not in the beacon itself.
On Apple platforms, Apple documents two related iBeacon functions: region monitoring detects the presence of a matching beacon, while ranging estimates relative proximity. Apple cautions that ranging does not provide a precise distance. Treat the signal as evidence that a person is near a place, not as a measurement that they are exactly a set number of metres away. See Apple’s explanation of determining proximity to an iBeacon.

Choose a useful marketing task before choosing hardware
Start with a question: what should someone be able to do more easily because their phone is near this location? A museum app might display information about the exhibit a visitor has approached. A retailer’s app might surface product details or stock information for the aisle. These are contextual uses because the nearby signal helps select information relevant to the person’s immediate setting.
Google’s historical examples include a museum exhibit and a bus stop. A Think with Google PDF, “How Beacons Can Reshape Retail”, also describes United Airlines using beacons with Android Nearby Notifications to help travelers find an in-flight entertainment app before a flight. Treat that as a historical example, not evidence that the same service or setup remains available.

That PDF also quotes a figure of more than 40 billion annual beacon-related content queries from Android devices. Its publication year could not be confirmed from the document text, so the number should not be read as a current usage statistic. The PDF’s account of a randomized study involving 10 large U.S. retailers concerns mobile search advertising and store visits—not the measured effect of beacon-triggered promotions—and does not establish that beacons caused those visits.
Select a beacon format your software can actually read
“Bluetooth beacon” does not identify one universal beacon format. Silicon Labs explains that there is no official Bluetooth SIG beacon standard; iBeacon, Eddystone, and AltBeacon are implementations developed by companies or groups. The transmitter and receiving app or platform must support the same format. See Silicon Labs’ technical overview of developing BLE beacons.

- Low Energy Consumption: Designed with Bluetooth Low Energy technology to maximize battery life and minimize power usage
Google introduced Eddystone in 2015 as an open, extensible BLE beacon format with multiple frame types and cross-platform aims. Its announcement described EIDs as identifiers that change frequently and can be decoded only by authorized clients. Those points describe the format’s historical design; they do not establish that every related Google service remains supported today. See Google’s Eddystone announcement.
Before buying or configuring equipment, confirm support across the complete path: beacon format, receiving app, target phone platforms, and any service that maps identifiers to content. There is no universally best format or vendor established by the available documentation.

- Advanced Long Range Water-Resistant Beacon: Extra long range, water-resistant (IP67) beacon with adjustable sensitivity movement sensor accelerometer. Transmit range: 0.2-100 meters using iBeacon legacy, 300 meters with PHY-coded scanner, and 900 meters with long range PHY-coded scanner. Extra wide range of TX broadcast power settings from super low -40 to extra powerful +8dBm. Warning: Do not set to Phy coded unless you have a Phy-coded scanner. Use Legacy broadcast only with a smartphone
- Extended Battery Life with Easy Replacement: 4 year battery life (CR2477 included). The battery is easily replaceable after 4 years. Real time battery level can be monitored using our app or retrieved programmatically using a scan request method or broadcast as part of a TLM broadcast. Pro version firmware opens up many different options for configuring
- Motion-Triggered Broadcasting Capability: Using its built-in movement sensor, this beacon can be configured to broadcast only after sensing its own movement. It can also be configured to broadcast normally but then to broadcast a slightly modified iBeacon UUID or different protocol after sensing movement
- Multiple Broadcasting Format Support: Broadcasts your choice of iBeacon, Eddystone TLM, Eddystone URL, and/or Eddystone UID format. Eddystone TLM broadcasts battery strength, temperature, and broadcast count data. The BC04P has five different slots for broadcasting (slots are numbered 0 through 4). Most users will only use one slot, but if you wanted to, you could technically broadcast up to 5 different UUID numbers all with different configurations

Plan and deploy a beacon campaign
- Define the user task and content. Decide what the person can accomplish at the location and what the app should display. Keep the response useful even if the person ignores it.
- Choose the format and receiving platform. Verify that the intended app and devices can detect the chosen beacon format. Do not assume a nearby phone will act without compatible software.
- Map identifiers to places or objects. Configure the app or backend to associate each beacon identifier with the correct location and content.
- Configure and place the hardware. Select equipment whose format, configuration method, power requirements, and target software match the deployment. Test actual app behavior and radio conditions at the intended site; signal behavior can depend on the environment.
- Set restrained trigger behavior. Use realistic proximity zones and prevent repeat or irrelevant messages. A proximity cue is not an exact-distance measurement.
- Maintain the installation. Monitor power, placement, and operation, and update app integrations as platform APIs and support change.
Apple’s current documentation continues to cover iBeacon and Core Location beacon ranging. Apple says an iOS app broadcasting as an iBeacon must remain in the foreground and recommends dedicated third-party beacon hardware for other implementations. Its current Core Location framework overview lists beacon ranging; Apple marks the older CLBeaconRegion class as deprecated in favor of CLBeaconIdentityCondition. Developers should use current APIs and check Apple’s documentation for the operating-system versions they target.

A beacon identifier is designed to be discoverable by nearby compatible devices. That makes it important to explain what the app detects and what happens next, especially if the system collects or transmits user, device, location, or personally identifying data. Ask for relevant permissions, describe the purpose plainly, and avoid collecting more than the experience needs.

Apple’s published iBeacon license text makes the licensee responsible for applicable laws and says licensed technology must not be used to transmit or collect user data, device data, location data, or personally identifying information without first obtaining consent and giving clear, complete information about the transmission, collection, and use. That is language from a specific license; legal requirements for a particular deployment depend on its jurisdiction and design.
Do not confuse a fixed venue beacon with a personal tracking tag. Apple and Google announced unwanted-tracking alerts in 2024 for compatible Bluetooth tracking devices that move with a person over time. That safety feature concerns tracking devices; it does not mean an ordinary beacon installed at a venue automatically tracks an individual. See Apple’s May 13, 2024 announcement.
Quick Recap
When beacon marketing is a poor fit
- There is no useful nearby action. A notification with no clear connection to the person’s location is likely to feel intrusive rather than helpful.
- Your audience is not using compatible software. A beacon broadcast alone cannot guarantee that phones will receive or display a message.
- You need exact indoor positioning. iBeacon ranging reports relative proximity, not precise distance.
- You cannot maintain the deployment. Hardware power, placement, app compatibility, and content mappings need ongoing attention.
- The data flow is unclear. If you cannot explain what is detected, collected, or shared and why, resolve that before deployment.
