Facebook Live With a Nikon Camera: Choose the Right USB or HDMI Setup

Connect a Nikon camera to Facebook Live using USB or HDMI. Learn which models need Webcam Utility, when native USB Streaming applies, and how to handle audio.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To go live on Facebook with a Nikon camera, connect it to a computer using one of three routes: Nikon Webcam Utility over USB, a model’s native USB Streaming mode, or HDMI through a compatible capture device. The right choice depends on your exact camera and how you want to handle audio. For Webcam Utility, plan on a separate microphone connected to the computer; Nikon says that USB connection does not carry audio from the camera.

Choose a Nikon-to-computer connection

Connection What you need Audio Best fit
Nikon Webcam Utility over USB A supported Nikon camera, its USB cable, and compatible software on the computer The camera’s audio is not sent over this USB connection; use a microphone connected to the computer if you need mic audio. A simple setup without a capture device, provided your camera is on Nikon’s compatibility list.
Native USB Streaming (UVC/UAC) A camera whose manual documents the feature and a USB connection to a computer or supported smart device The Z5II manual documents video and audio over USB Streaming. Check your own model’s manual; this is not the same feature as Webcam Utility. A supported model when you want a direct USB connection with camera video and audio.
HDMI and capture device A compatible HDMI cable, a compatible capture device, a computer, and broadcasting software Plan the audio path for your setup; Nikon suggests a lavalier microphone for HDMI setups. A more involved capture setup; Nikon describes HDMI as its higher-quality option.

Facebook’s accessible instructions in Meta’s 2017 announcement describe desktop streaming with software or external hardware, but the announcement directs readers to the Help Center for current directions. Check Facebook’s current Live Producer guidance for the steps and requirements shown to your account: Meta’s announcement about going live from a computer.

Option 1: Use Nikon Webcam Utility over USB

Nikon Webcam Utility makes a supported Nikon camera available to compatible computer software as a video source. Nikon’s current compatibility page lists these models: Z9, Z8, Z7II, Z7, Zf, Z6III, Z6II, Z6, Z5IIC, Z5II, Z5, Zfc, Z50II, Z50, D6, D5, D850, D810, D780, D750, D500, D7500, D7200, D5600, D5500, D5300 and D3500. Check the live list and the current utility download before relying on support, since compatibility can change. See Nikon Webcam Utility and the Nikon Download Center utility page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check that your exact camera appears on Nikon’s Webcam Utility compatibility list, then download and install the utility for your computer.
  2. Connect the camera to the computer with its supplied USB cable.
  3. Open compatible streaming software and select the Nikon camera/utility as the video source. Nikon lists several tested applications on its utility information; consult the current Nikon page rather than assuming every app remains supported.
  4. Connect and select a separate microphone in the computer or streaming software if you want live voice audio. Nikon explicitly says, “There is no audio feed coming from the camera since it is using a USB connection.”
  5. Check the video and microphone levels in the streaming software, then follow the current Facebook Live Producer prompts to select your destination and start the broadcast.

Nikon’s tested-software listings may change. Its Download Center notes that Facebook Messenger was removed from the tested-app list in accordance with that service’s discontinuation; that note is not a statement about Facebook Live availability. Do not assume an app’s inclusion on an old list guarantees current support.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Option 2: Use native USB Streaming when your camera supports it

Some Nikon cameras have a built-in USB streaming mode distinct from Webcam Utility. For example, the Z5II manual describes “Live Streaming (USB Streaming (UVC/UAC))”: the supplied USB cable can connect the camera to a computer or smart device for streaming or web-conferencing software, with video and audio. This example does not establish support on other models. Read the manual for your exact camera and confirm any operating-system or software requirements before choosing this route: Z5II manual: USB Streaming (UVC/UAC).

If the feature is documented for your model, enable it using the camera’s manual, connect by USB, and select the camera in the streaming software. Confirm that both its video and intended audio input appear before going live. If the camera manual does not describe native USB streaming, do not treat Webcam Utility compatibility as proof that the camera supports UVC/UAC.

Option 3: Send HDMI through a capture device

For HDMI capture, the camera’s HDMI output passes through a compatible capture device, which connects to the computer and appears as a source in broadcasting software. Nikon describes this as its higher-quality option and names Elgato Cam Link, Magewell USB Capture, AJA U-TAP HDMI and AVerMedia ExtremeCap UVC-BU110 as examples for select Nikon cameras. These are examples, not a guarantee of compatibility with every Nikon body. Verify the camera, capture device, cable and software combination before buying or setting up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check your camera manual for its HDMI output options and any guidance for live viewing.
  2. Connect the camera’s HDMI output to a capture device using a compatible cable, then connect the capture device to the computer.
  3. Open broadcasting software and choose the capture device as the video input. Nikon names OBS Studio, Ecamm Live, vMix and SparkoCam as software examples; availability and compatibility may vary.
  4. Choose and test your audio input in the software. Nikon suggests a lavalier microphone for HDMI setups, but confirm where that microphone connects and that the software is using it.
  5. Use the current Facebook Live Producer workflow to configure and start the stream.

Nikon’s setup guidance also recommends planning camera power, support and lighting. Use a charged battery or an AC power component confirmed for your exact camera in its manual; a tripod or clamp can steady the framing, and constant light is optional. Nikon’s overview of the setup paths and equipment is at How to Live Stream Using a Nikon Camera.

Check these details before you go live

  • Camera support: Verify the exact model for Webcam Utility or native USB Streaming separately. Support for one does not establish support for the other.
  • Audio routing: Webcam Utility over USB requires a computer-connected microphone for microphone audio. For native USB streaming or HDMI, confirm the audio source in your model manual and streaming software.
  • Facebook’s current workflow: Meta’s accessible desktop-streaming announcement dates to March 22, 2017. Use current Facebook Live Producer guidance for eligibility, destination options, stream keys and encoder requirements; the historical announcement does not establish today’s settings.
  • Power and compatibility: Check your camera manual for the correct adapter and HDMI details, and verify capture-device compatibility rather than assuming a named example works with every body.
  • Test the whole chain: Confirm the camera appears as a video source, the intended microphone produces audio, and the framing and power are suitable before starting the broadcast.
