To use Blender on a Mac, first check whether it has Apple silicon or an Intel processor: Blender 5.0 and later support Apple silicon only, while Blender 4.5 LTS was the last release with an official Intel Mac build. Install the compatible app, learn a few viewport controls, then build a simple model and test a short animation before moving on to complex scenes.
Check your Mac’s compatibility
Blender 5.0 and later support Macs with Apple silicon. Blender 4.5 LTS was the last release with an official macOS build for Intel Macs. If you have an Intel Mac, use Blender 4.5 LTS or an earlier official release; Intel builds made independently are not officially supported. Install Blender on macOS
- Download the macOS disk image (DMG) for a release compatible with your Mac.
- Open the DMG and drag
Blender.appinto the Applications folder. - Launch Blender from Applications. macOS security settings may require you to approve the first launch.
To update, download the newer app and replace the existing Blender.app. If you want to keep multiple versions, move or rename the existing app before installing the new one.

Set up comfortable viewport navigation
Blender’s default controls use a middle mouse button for orbiting around a scene. Hold Shift while dragging with the middle button to pan, or Ctrl while dragging to zoom. A three-button mouse with a clickable middle button makes those defaults easy to use, but it is optional: Blender documents alternate navigation methods for trackpads and mice without a middle button. - Orbit: drag with the middle mouse button.
- Pan: Shift and middle-mouse drag.
- Zoom: Ctrl and middle-mouse drag.
- Find a misplaced scene: select an object in the Outliner and frame it, or press Home to fit objects in the viewport.
If orbiting around the scene’s central point makes it hard to inspect an object or move through a scene, Blender also provides View Dolly, Walk/Fly Navigation, Auto Depth, Zoom to Mouse Position and Zoom Region.
Model with a small set of core shortcuts
Start with one object and practice the default keymap before adding more tools. Select the object, press Tab to switch to Edit Mode, then use the number keys to choose what part of the mesh to work on. Blender’s keymap and selection documentation describes these defaults; you can customize them.

- Tab: toggle between Object Mode and Edit Mode.
- 1, 2, 3 in Edit Mode: choose vertex, edge or face selection, respectively.
- G, R, S: move, rotate or scale the selected object or mesh elements.
Try making a basic shape by selecting and transforming vertices, edges or faces, then orbit and pan to inspect the result from different angles. Getting comfortable with navigation early makes it easier to see what a modeling change actually did.

A short position or rotation change is enough to learn the keyframe loop. Blender’s animation documentation covers keyframes and more advanced topics such as drivers, constraints, armatures and shape keys.

- Choose a starting frame and place an object where you want its motion to begin.
- Press
Ito insert a keyframe for the relevant property, such as position or rotation. - Move to a later frame and change the object’s position or rotation.
- Press
Iagain to insert another keyframe, then play the animation to check the motion. - Press
F12to render the current frame as a still image.
Blender offers EEVEE and Cycles among its rendering options. The best choice and the time required depend on the scene and render configuration; a specific render speed or result cannot be assumed for every Mac.
Know which Mac shortcuts differ
On macOS, Command can replace Control for many Blender shortcuts, but not all: some combinations conflict with operating-system shortcuts. Check the shortcut for the particular operation rather than translating every Ctrl combination to Cmd automatically. Blender’s default keymap lists Cmd+Comma for Preferences. The keymap reference describes the defaults.

Set performance expectations by workload
Blender’s troubleshooting guidance notes that older or slower hardware can make viewport rendering slow, while dense geometry can make selection slower. These are workload issues, not a basis for naming one best Mac: performance depends on the computer, scene complexity and render configuration. Keep early practice scenes simple, and add detail or more demanding rendering options incrementally. See Blender’s troubleshooting guide.
