Why Do I See a Hidden Network on My Wi-Fi?

A “Hidden Network” entry is a nearby Wi-Fi access point that does not broadcast its name. It does not identify its owner or prove your Wi-Fi has been accessed.

A “Hidden Network” entry usually means your device has detected a nearby Wi-Fi access point that does not broadcast its network name, or SSID. The label does not identify who owns that access point, and seeing it does not show that anyone has accessed your Wi-Fi. You do not need to join it.

What “Hidden Network” means

SSID stands for service set identifier: the name shown for a Wi-Fi network. An access point can be configured not to broadcast its SSID, sometimes through a setting called “hidden” or “closed.” Devices may still detect the access point and show a generic “Hidden Network” entry. Apple defines SSID and explains hidden networks; its platform security documentation describes how Apple devices handle them.

The label is descriptive, not an identification. It cannot tell you whether the access point belongs to a neighbor, a managed network, or your own router. It also does not prove that your router has been hacked or that the network is malicious.

Should you connect to it?

No—not unless you recognize the network and are authorized to use it. A listing alone is not evidence of compromise. Connect only to networks you know; if you cannot identify this one, leave it alone rather than probing or trying to alter it.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

If you need to confirm whether it belongs to your home network but cannot administer the router, ask the network owner or your internet provider to check the setup.

How to check and secure your own router

  1. Open your router maker’s or internet provider’s official app or administration page, then review the connected-device list and wireless settings. Menu names differ by router, so follow its own instructions rather than relying on a universal path.
  2. Change the router’s default administrator credentials and set a strong Wi-Fi password. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when the router and devices support it; see its Windows Wi-Fi guidance and Wi-Fi security guidance.
  3. Use a distinctive network name. Apple recommends one unique, case-sensitive name across supported bands; common or default names can make nearby networks easier to confuse. See Apple’s router recommendations.
  4. If SSID hiding is enabled, turn it off in the router’s wireless settings. Apple advises securing access through the router’s security settings instead of hiding the network name.

Why hiding the name is not extra security

Hiding an SSID does not make the access point undetectable or stop unauthorized access. Apple states that hidden networks can still be detected and that devices may send probes containing the SSID when searching for one. That description is specific to Apple devices; it should not be assumed to describe every operating system’s exact behavior. Apple also warns that hidden-network use may expose information that identifies a user and the hidden networks they use. Apple Platform Security and Apple’s router guidance explain these privacy considerations.

The guidance, published September 17, 2026, also notes that a hidden name can be learned from management traffic. See Apple’s Wi-Fi deployment guide.

What to remember

  • A hidden-network listing means a nearby access point is not broadcasting its network name.
  • The entry does not establish ownership or show that someone has accessed your Wi-Fi.
  • Do not join a network you do not recognize or have permission to use.
  • For your own router, use a strong password and current authentication settings; hiding the SSID is not a substitute for security.
