AWS Elemental MediaPackage does not create or loop a playlist, and it is not a direct YouTube publisher. For a 24/7 prerecorded-video stream, use a playlist-capable playout and encoder as the source. Configure that encoder to send a live feed to MediaPackage and, if it supports the required destinations, separately to YouTube. MediaPackage receives and packages its input for a configured endpoint; YouTube has its own ingest URL, stream key, and requirements.
How the workflow fits together
Think of this as a playout-and-encoding workflow with separate delivery paths, not a MediaPackage playlist feature. The playout system chooses and repeats authorized prerecorded videos; an encoder turns that continuous output into a live stream and sends it to configured destinations.

- Playlist playout: supplies the videos in the intended order and keeps playback running.
- Encoder: produces the live output. It needs to support the MediaPackage input protocol and YouTube’s selected ingest method. If you want to feed both, confirm that it can send to both destinations at once.
- MediaPackage: receives the encoder’s input on a channel and dynamically packages content according to an output endpoint’s settings. That endpoint makes content available to players or CDNs; it is not the YouTube stream key or a playlist scheduler.
- YouTube: receives a separately configured encoder output using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
Do not assume that a MediaPackage endpoint can be pasted into YouTube as its ingest address, or that configuring MediaPackage automatically creates a YouTube output. The appropriate MediaPackage guide and supported formats depend on which MediaPackage generation and endpoint type you use.

YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before building the workflow.

Decide how long each YouTube session should run
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need archives, plan sessions with that limit in mind and verify YouTube’s current behavior before launch. A 24/7 channel can require stream-session management in addition to continuous playlist playback; do not assume one encoder session will create an unlimited archive.
Choose a playout and encoder deliberately
MediaPackage does not provide the playlist loop. Select an upstream system that can continuously play the authorized recordings and encode them for the destinations you need. YouTube identifies Gyre as one hosted option for continuous prerecorded-video streams, but evaluate its capabilities separately; its compatibility with a particular MediaPackage configuration is not established here. For a self-managed design, confirm destination support, codecs, playlist transitions, failure recovery, monitoring, and any latency or DVR requirements with the encoder vendor.

Configure a self-managed MediaPackage and YouTube workflow

Create the MediaPackage channel and endpoint
In the AWS Elemental MediaPackage console, create a channel to represent the encoder input, then create an output endpoint with the packaging format and any access or encryption settings your downstream player or CDN requires. The endpoint’s settings determine how MediaPackage packages the incoming content. Supported codecs and formats vary by endpoint type, so use the guide for your MediaPackage generation and chosen endpoint rather than assuming one format applies to all.

Connect the encoder to MediaPackage
For standard MediaPackage live input, configure the encoder to push HLS over HTTPS using WebDAV and digest authentication. Use the input URL and credentials generated for the channel; treat the credentials as secrets. Follow the matching AWS guide for your MediaPackage generation. If you enable input redundancy, ensure redundant input streams use matching encoder settings.

Create or select the YouTube live stream
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the encoder workflow. Enter those values in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, not in the MediaPackage endpoint configuration. A stream key is a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or store it in an exposed script. Reset it if you believe it has been compromised.

Select and configure YouTube’s ingest method
Follow the ingest method selected for the YouTube stream. If you choose YouTube HLS ingest, configure that output to meet YouTube’s HLS requirements: MPEG-2 TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are YouTube ingest constraints; MediaPackage’s input settings do not automatically transfer to the encoder’s YouTube output.

Verify the encoder can serve both destinations
If your design needs the same playout to reach MediaPackage and YouTube, confirm that the chosen encoder supports simultaneous outputs using the required protocols and formats. The fact that MediaPackage has an endpoint does not establish that an encoder can publish to that endpoint and YouTube together, or that the two destinations accept identical settings.

Run an end-to-end test before relying on it
Start with a short test using representative video and audio. Confirm that MediaPackage receives input and that its endpoint plays through the intended downstream player or CDN. Separately confirm that YouTube receives the encoder output and that its preview and stream health are satisfactory. Check transitions between playlist items, audio continuity, and what happens when the encoder or a destination disconnects. Test failover if your design includes it, then monitor audio and video quality during operation.

Copyright, reused videos, and stream-session limits
Only stream recordings you are authorized to use. A video being prerecorded or publicly viewable does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Review the rights for music, footage, performances, and other included material, and check YouTube’s current livestream and monetization rules before launching. This workflow description does not establish that a playlist qualifies for monetization or that repeated content will be accepted under YouTube’s policies.
Keep the under-12-hour archive behavior in mind when planning a continuous channel: YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify current platform behavior and decide how you will manage sessions, archives, and any transitions required to keep the channel live.
Common problems and what to check
- MediaPackage receives no input: check that the encoder is using the channel’s generated input URL and credentials, and that it is configured for the required HTTPS, HLS, WebDAV, and digest-authentication workflow for standard MediaPackage live input.
- The MediaPackage endpoint does not play: check that the endpoint’s packaging format and access or encryption settings match the capabilities and configuration of the downstream player or CDN. Endpoint support varies by type.
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: verify the YouTube destination uses the correct stream URL and key, and confirm that the encoder is actually publishing to YouTube rather than only to MediaPackage. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- YouTube HLS ingest rejects or stalls the output: check for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist.
- The playlist stops or a transition interrupts playback: investigate the playout and encoder, since MediaPackage is not the playlist scheduler. Test transitions and recovery with the selected encoder before relying on a continuous stream.
- A stream ends or an archive is missing: account for YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior for streams under 12 hours, and verify current session and archive behavior before planning a longer broadcast.
- Audio or video quality is poor: inspect the source files, encoder output, preview, and stream-health information; test representative material and monitor the live output rather than assuming that a successful connection guarantees good playback.
Operational and cost trade-offs
A self-managed AWS design gives you control over the playout and packaging components, but you must operate and monitor the playlist source and encoder, configure each destination, and validate their compatibility. MediaPackage is one part of that system, not a complete 24/7 prerecorded-streaming service. Budget for the AWS services and any separate playout or encoding tools you choose; costs depend on the deployed services and usage, so check current AWS pricing for your configuration rather than relying on a generic estimate.
