To make AI-agent screenshots smaller, capture only the pixels the task needs, reduce dimensions when possible, and use JPEG or WebP instead of PNG when lossy compression is acceptable. Keep a lossless format for transparency, pixel-exact comparisons, or details that compression makes hard to read. The right settings depend on what the agent must see—not on a universal quality number.
Start with the visual task
Before changing settings, decide what information the agent needs from the image. A screenshot used to identify a page layout may tolerate more compression than one used to read small text, inspect a chart, or compare pixels exactly.

- Broad layout or visual state: Try a smaller capture and lossy encoding, then confirm the agent still recognizes the relevant elements.
- Small text, fine edges, or coordinate-sensitive controls: Preserve enough resolution and quality for those details to remain legible.
- Exact pixel comparison or transparency: Use a lossless option rather than accepting artifacts that may change pixels or discard transparency.
Check representative results in the actual capture-to-model workflow. A setting that looks acceptable to a person may still remove distinctions the agent needs.

Capture only the relevant element or viewport
A full-page image includes content the agent may not need. With Playwright screenshots, you can target an element, capture a viewport, or request a full-page capture. Choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale deliberately
Playwright supports CSS-pixel and device-pixel screenshot scaling. CSS-pixel output can avoid unnecessary high-resolution pixels when device-pixel detail is not needed. Device-pixel output may help with small details, so inspect the result before choosing. Playwright does not prescribe one scale for every use case.
Set suitable maximum dimensions
Chrome DevTools agent configuration exposes maximum width and height; larger screenshots are reduced when those limits are set. Set limits based on the task and lower them only while the text and controls the agent needs remain distinguishable. The Chrome DevTools configuration documentation also lists supported formats and quality controls.

Choose a format and compression level

Chrome DevTools lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP, and describes JPEG and WebP as smaller while providing a quality control for the lossy formats. Its quality range is a control scale, not a guarantee of a particular byte count. No universal quality value or target file size is established for every vision system.
Google for Developers says WebP images are “about 30% smaller in size compared to PNG and JPEG images at equivalent visual quality.” Treat that as a general comparison from its WebP compression documentation, not a promised reduction for a particular screenshot or agent pipeline. WebP supports both lossy and lossless modes as well as transparency.

A practical tuning sequence
- Identify the visual need. Decide whether the agent needs layout, readable text, icon recognition, chart detail, or pixel-level comparison.
- Minimize the surface. Capture a relevant element or viewport; avoid full-page output unless the task needs content below the fold.
- Reduce excess resolution. Try CSS-pixel scaling or suitable maximum width and height. Retain enough detail for the agent’s target content.
- Try a lossy format when acceptable. Use JPEG or WebP if supported, then adjust quality gradually rather than assuming a preset will work.
- Verify with the destination agent. Check text, edges, colors, and controls that the task depends on. Compare both file size and task success.
- Keep lossless capture for precision-dependent work. Use PNG or lossless WebP when exact pixels or transparency are required.
Keep screenshot payload behavior separate from compression
In the OpenAI computer-use API workflow, screenshots are excluded from API output by default while the agent can still observe them, according to the OpenAI computer-use documentation. That statement describes output inclusion in that workflow; it is not a general guarantee about image processing, billing, or how other vendors handle screenshots.

Should I use CSS-pixel or device-pixel screenshots?
Use CSS-pixel output when device-pixel detail is unnecessary; retain higher-resolution capture when small details need it. Check the result in your workflow.
